| reply to PhoenixAZ Re: [ALL] New Cox Products..... A preview of what is to come....
Hey guys, it's Ray, your friendly product guy. In addition to mostly lurking here, I'm also coordinating our Cox Labs efforts. You're right in that one project does not a Labs make, but it's just the beginning. We're looking to try some newer/cooler stuff, especially projects that might appeal more toward the BBR crowd.
As far as the Journal, we recognize a replacement to Personal WebSpace is long overdue, and we're trying to prioritize feature development. One way to do that is to offer a bunch, and see what our customers like and use the most.
PowerBoost is an example of a cool feature we can implement due to the investment in our network. There are some servers out there that can take advantage of the additional speed, but you guys know how the Internet works -- there're lots of links and such (Congress calls them "tubes"), so we'll keep improving PowerBoost while others keep working on their access. Of course we wouldn't use the name without Comcast's permission.
Hey, I'm on a roll... speaking of overdue features, SSL-protected WebMail authentication *is* coming, so as much as we appreciate the passing of the hat, let's divert those funds to a better cause (Habitat for Humanity gets my vote).
So if you have any thoughts on interesting services whose tires we might kick via Cox Labs, please drop me a line at productguy at cox dot net or PM me here. (Try to keep them somewhat related to what we do, but we're not limited to just data products -- we likey video, voice, and wireless, too).
Thank you all VERY MUCH for allowing us into your homes to serve you. And thanks for posting so much of the good/bad/ugly at BBR -- you know a lot of us participate here, which I hope shows how much we value your opinions and suggestions.
Happy holidays, everyone.

| reply to ajwees41 Try uploading full-res shots from a DSLR...that's the main reason I pay for the 12mb/1mb package is because it takes long enough on 1mb up, let alone 512k up.
Curious, is the powerboost out in some areas of AZ already? I haven't noticed it on my own connection (I wonder if it may be a side effect of my m0n0wall's QOS setup) but I recently set my dad up with a new Motorola SB5101 and Linksys WRT54G. His ancient Netgear router's wireless had died, and his even-older SB3100D (yes, with the telco upload option available) was peaking at 5 megabits down. After hooking up the new stuff and getting it provisioned, the downstream on test.lvcm.com averaged 8.4 megabits, with spikes in the 12-megabit range at the beginning of the download test.
I only wish the online modem provisioning would work, every time I try to do it, it's always unavailable. |

| reply to ProductGuy I'm glad to see that Webmail with SSL is (finally) in the works - only took 5 years to catch up to the rest of the world. A (slightly) related feature that really should be there: support for .htaccess (or similar) files on the personal webspace. It's amazing that Cox is unable to support these; I tried several times talking to tech support and they didn't even understand the concept of password protected web pages...
I finally gave up and bought my own domain & pay for hosting service. The good news is that once Verizon FIOS comes into my neighborhood, it'll be that much easier to abandon Cox, since my web pages aren't in any way tied to them. [That's a hint, Cox - if you give me enough reasons, I won't abandon you - but at this point the only advantage Cox has over Verizon is fewer characters in the email address.] |

It would be nice to be able to set the correct encoding and MIME type for files. In addition, Cox could get rid of the forbidden errors that ensue with certain file extensions. |

Fewer letters in a public domain like that also means you will be easier to find by the zombie pc's that are sending this stuff. @cox.net isn't short enough for you?

| Here's an idea - how about allowing for black/white lists that we can control and we would have that option at the internet tools. Entering in our email addresses and *.*tigerdirect.com since I've noticed some important e-mails going to the spam folder.

2 edits | reply to ajwees41 When I am uploading my web site to a server the upload bandwidth is a serious bottleneck. I get 1.6Mbps effectively and it takes about 25 minutes to FTP my web site.
Cox should also note I don't use Cox for my web site since 10Mbytes is useless. Also, the Cox web site naming convention is too cryptic for google bots to find as well. I bought my own domain and rent space on a server.
I don't use godaddy.com but they have a very robust domain and web hosting capability. I don't think Cox should waste their investment funds and duplicate a very capable service from godaddy.com and other similar companies. |

You are incorrect. in 1995 it was 10mb down, 1500 up when it was cox@home so yes i'm saying the upload has'nt increased in 10 years, actually it was brought down from those levels to 3000/128 and slowly inched back up but not even to the levels of 10 years ago, you didn't need to pay extra for a tier either. you got the 10000/1500 on the one package they offered. the only places that have more upload are the ones where FIOS is and they get 2 megs up, even on the preferred level of service. -- You can never be too rich, too thin or have too much Bandwidth |
