You only have Sprint and VZ's EV-DO against HSDPA.
First Cingular, similar to Sprint but unlike VZ is giving here VERY CONSERVATIVE numbers - here, in Downtown NYC, probably one of the busiest spots I have a regular 1-1.2Mbit any time of a day - and it's my TyTn, not a card which would be typically a tad faster with less latency.
Secondly Cingular is not only typically faster than Verizon (as it should be actually obvious since this week Rev A upgrade that only brought VZ to close to Cingular) but also has a non-restrictive policy unlike VZ.
Third the current Cingular equipment can scale up HSDPA to 14Mb/s without upgrades, Cingular only needs more backbone to support it.
In other words Cingular is just as much as way behind as much as AllTell is a major nationwide carrier. (Hint: BS  )
PS: coverage IS somewhat still behind VZ or Sprint, don't get me wrong but that's obvious, I think. |

Problem with Cingular is they are hiding that many of these markets only have UMTS, not HSDPA. UMTS is notably slower than HSDPA. Ping times are also very sporadic compared to EVDO.
I'm sticking with Sprint EVDO for now. RevA currently outperforms HSDPA and Sprint has the largest broadband network.

Actually, Alltel has significant EVDO rollout coming in January. It is only is certain states, but in terms of area, it is huge.

Sprint and Alltel have DO agreements while Verizon does not, so Sprint/Alltel have the greatest advantage of all carriers. |

Does Cingular have a better product? Well thats up in the air, but with this sort of technology, the bigger the better. With Sprint and Verizon's networks, and decent flow of funds to improve and upgrade, I think you will see them win. |

Umm what? Why is that? And if it's true then EV-DO is close to death considering the overwhelming majority of the world uses HSDPA.

Hardly. They will have to invest way more than Cingular just to keep up with HSDPA once Cingular gets the bakcbone, let alone EV-DO broadband service is still behind Cingular's HSDPA in many ways. Sprint has nice speeds but their call quality was the most cr5aptastic on the Northeast where I tested.
And we didn't even count the 900lbs gorilla, T-Mobile, who's about to start its HSDPA in 6-8 months... |

The current bands are becoming very crowded with public services and they need more. This would have huge advantages for people who travel because their phone would work everywhere! |

Or you missed the part when it said rat labs? You know in labs many nice things happen - but 90% of them never gets even manufactured, let alone deployed.
My point was that Cingular already HAS a 14Mb/s equipment in place. Heck, my phone is already capable to go as high as 3.6Mb/s!  EV-DO providers have nothing similar yet.
But who cares, they will probably both die out to WiMax |
