Re: Lavasoft = Privacy? Not any more!

Corinne knows the Lavasoft folks better than most, having been associated with them in the past. IMHO they've shown a disdain for the concerns of their user base for quite a while now, along with a distinct lack of class. So I'm not surprised, but still disappointed for their 'victims' and good people like CJ who've chosen to work with them.

I've been AdAware-free since the WhenU fiasco, and this just confirms once again my decision was correct.

Spyblaster.

Can we assume from the screenshot you posted that you're actually referring to SpywareBlaster ? With the abundance of copycat, rogue vendors out there it would help to at least be accurate with the names of legitimate products.

IMHO.

I stopped using it on my system and the wife's a while back, i think it's time i remove it from my daughters system as well.
what do you use instead?
I gave up on all this protection software a while back too. I just got so sick of it. Some worked OK, some did nothing, and ones that used to work well went downhill over time and started becoming problems in their own right (e.g., this thread about Lavasoft).

For me, the answer was Linux. I know many here don't want to hear that word and will spit blood just at it's mere utterance. But it seems silly not mentioning it just because some people will be pissed off. Of course Linux will not protect you from spam from unscrupulous companies. But it may save you from feeling the need to install extra software from companies that behave like this and put you on spammer's lists in the first place.

No blood spitting here.. But posting about Linux in this thread is what is known as OT... and has nothing to do with Lavasoft's actions or what replacement others might use..

The thing is, some of us have machines that would be crippled if we were to use Linux.

If you have basic needs, Linux is fine! Knock yourself out!

*THIS* machine would have alot of dead HW with any Linux.
Having HW that is non-functional is not what I purchased this machine for.
Seeing as I take little to no hit whatsoever from running ALOT of various softwares(AV/AS/firewall only for security)... no worries!

Maybe on my older laptop, which is a rather generic machine, Linux will be an option... not this monster!

As to Lavasoft - AdAware... I have it more as a novelty any more. All it(or anything else for that matter) finds is cookies.

Cookies are irrelavent!

Not to wander O/T and get spanked for it, but I can assure you that I have more than 'basic needs' and linux satisfies them all, and then some !

There's a lot of misconception about Linux, but I think (or hope, at least) you know me well enough to know I'm not in the habit of "blowin' smoke" at the membership here. You might be surprised at what Linux is up to these days, if you choose the right distro for your hardware and 'special needs' (no offense to the short-bus crew).

Anyway, enough O/T blather - different strokes, and all that. At least we can agree that Lavasoft sucks.

Another PR spectacular by the folks @ Lavasoft and yet some of you are shocked by their actions....

Combind that with an ageing product which in its current build is ineffective against a lot of the new malware appearing.
Inability to unpack certain packers and the infrequency of updates being other *weak* points to the products overall effectiveness in its current evolution.

You only need to see the state of play in their product support forum with reguards users seeking extra help because the software has been p4wned to see this for yourselves.

The onetime *daddy* of them all needs to evolve or slip away into the realms of obscurity unless you want a *Cookie cleaner* for thoes pesky hard to remove *critical files*

Maybe it is the season on why I am being so forgiving

If this is true about Ad Aware it is sad.
They were one of the first to fight spyware and so many of us have been able to use their free product for so many years.

No matter what they are doing now all of us who have benefited from their free product owe then a great big thank you.

Maybe if more of us had paid for what we took for granted they would never have sunk to this level.

I thank them for past good deeds and hope they return to their old ways.

I stopped using Lavasoft after the spyware fiasco. Now we have them selling there customers email addresses. If money was the issue then they should no longer provide there product for free. Even if you paid for the product, it won't stop them from selling your email address.

We trust a company to do the right thing and they turn around and do all the wrong things.

Sorry, I was suggesting that Linux was my replacement. Maybe that's too big of a replacement step to be considered here.

Dadkins, you are correct ... specialized or proprietary hardware can be a problem for any OS, especially OS'es that were not considered when the hardware was designed and drivers written. This could be a big stumbling block for anyone considering Linux as an alternative to Windows plus additional anti-malware applications. I don't know what unique hardware you have, although I think I remember you posting about a Sony laptop previously. If proprietary hardware is to be found, it will most likely be found on a laptop. That's where the small size and low power battles are fought, which leads vendors to distinguish themselves with specialized and customized offerings.

Thanks for the heads up Corrine See Profile. Although I also gave up on Lavasoft after the WhenU fiasco, I still know a few people who believe in it. Maybe this will change their minds.

For myself, between Fx, Opera and Ccleaner, I really have no use for their product anyway.

If you'll look at the response Lavasoft provided in the link to their forums, they claim that "Bluehornet" is simply the system they use for email sending.

It's kind of unrealistic to expect a company to NOT plug their products to people who have subscribed to their mailing list, isn't it? (unless I misunderstand the situation here - I didn't receive this email because I don't use Ad-aware).

Was this email a plug for Lavasoft products, or something else?

hmm..how can we be sure that when we use the uninstaller it actually takes away everything that it's supposed to? especially if we're using the free version? will the uninstaller leave something that we don't want behind?
