Just like I said it would. More swiss for the hacker sandwich. This is Microsofts best effort "signifigant progress"?
It's sad, really, because we didn't even need Vista. There isn't really anything in it worth the time, trouble and expense to "upgrade" to it. They will, of course, end up shoving it down our throats, since the OEM's have all jumped on the bandwagon and see a excuse to jack up the prices on computers with those whiz bang vidcards and RAM.
I'm sure the makers of those cards and RAM are ecstatic as well. Dont forget the DVD drive so you can run the friggin install disk, IF you even get one, of course and not some lame assed "restore" disk to keep it "factory fresh".
Never mind the expected explosion in bloat and the doubling in price. The only reason they pursued this thing is because they wanted to follow their tried and proven marketing. XP is mature and the profits are falling off. The Windoze OS is their cash cow.
Now they can say Windoze is "new" and, gee, you get a new eye candy GUI-IF, of course, you have a super whiz bang Vid card, 2 Gig of ram and a new mother board for them-And, gee! 64 bit for the true geek too!
Other than that, betcha it's the same thing as before, as shown by at least one "flaw" mentioned here that also affects previous versions. I wonder why...
Run, little lemmings, run...Only $400 this time around for super whiz bang...dont forget $300 for the vidcard and another $200 for RAM...Run! | | Hangmn Don't Fight It...It's Inevitable Premium join:2000-04-08 Philadelphia, PA

Why do all the *nix and X people CONSTANTLY refer to just Windows as bloat? I also laugh when people call Windows bloat. Anyone took a look at any recent Linux distro? For example, they still haven't been able to figure out I don't have an HP printer attached to my machine, but the HP printing System still is installed and running, right along side CUPS. Which also brings to mind that I don't have a printer attached at all, so why is CUPS even loaded?
Why do I need 2-3 media players, 2 CD burning application and loads of other utter crap installed on my machine?
I am amazed.
(Disclaimer: I have been living with Ubuntu 6.10 for the past two weeks exclusively, never having once booted back in XP and so far I am very unimpressed.) -- Use the OS tool for the job. | | N3OGH Bear patrol must be working like a charm Premium join:2003-11-11 Philly burbs

| reply to Hangmn I reinstalled OS X on both my newer Intel Macs with only 1 disk. I do the initial re install so I'm not stuck with things like fonts for Chinese and the like. Just a little extra disk space.
Don't get me wrong here, I'm not looking to start a flame war, or get involved in one. IMHO, it's a computer, not your wife, so what platform you choose is your business.
That said, it must have been a while since the last time you did an OS X install. The whole thing comes on 1 disk now, with a second disk for "optional" stuff. But the basic OS can be installed from 1 disk.
I'm guessing it was still on CD-ROM and not DVD.... -- Never ask what sort of a computer a guy drives. If he's a Mac user, he'll tell you. If not, why embarrass him? -Tom Clancy | | severach

Indeed, however, you can at least REMOVE that stuff from an install during the setup. Windows makes in quite difficult to remove the bloat that's in the OS - Media Player, IE, Outlook Express, etc. -- Prove it... | | AnonDOG

Clearly you know how to install Red Hat, SuSE, or some other such as Mandrake ...
Free BSD, Open BSD .... check the install ISO.
Most Linux systems can be booted from a couple of floppies. Windows NT was 40 million lines of code. The Unix kernel is less that 4 million lines of code.
The reason the call it bloated is because it *IS* bloated.
I installed two PPPoE aggregators last week running Mikrotik which is Linux based. They are running in 38 Megs and each of them currently has over two hundred subs connected to it...
There is bloat and then there is *MICROSOFT BLOAT*.

| reply to Fatal Vector Yes, XP has reached a mature point in it's lifecycle. However, every product has an end of life and a few obstacles that cannot be overcome by a simple "refresh" or service pack. As hardware evolves, so must the software to support it.
There are a lot more things than the bells and whistles you see on the UI side of life.
From a business perspective, ease of deployment and overall maintenance of the OS really reduces late nights and headaches.
As far as calling people lemmings...well I guess you could say that since the overwhelming crowd uses a Microsoft based operating system (go here to view some stats about browser usage, os distribution, etc. »www.w3schools.com/browsers/brows···tats.asp)
Call me a M$ fanboi if you wish, but you don't know anything about me really and therefore can't really make that unfounded and ill-informed claim can you? Same thing with being a lemming...last I checked I didn't look like some kind of rodent

Well, I got a couple of thumbs up for that post, so it appears there was at least some agreement with what I said. Besides, if people weren't so intent on flaming me, I would be a bit more easy going. In any case, I'm going to say what I like and witty one liners dont affect me, other than to make me laugh. Sooner or later, my dedicated group of groupies will get the idea unless they are totally stupid.
The fact remains that there is nothing wrong with the computers currently running XP, nor is there anything wrong with XP once it is patched properly.
The truth is just as I said. Microsofts profits are going down and this is nothing but the continuation of marketing 101 for them: Same old same old. By bloat, I mean that it is TWICE the size of XP, just as XP was larger than 98 SE before it.
It is also TWICE as expensive and made so THEY CAN SHUT IT DOWN REMOTELY so you cant use what you paid for, OS OR COMPUTER, for whatever reason they like. If this doesn't trouble you, you deserve to get screwed, as I'm sure many legitimate users will with "Genuine advantage"
This is because Microsoft (like the allmighty GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOGLE) is trying to be all things to all people to maintain it's monopoly position, instead of concentrating on putting out the most close to bulletproof OPERATING SYSTEM it can without the extensive miscellaneous crap "features" that should be aquirable through third party vendors.
Sooner or later, people will have to stop jumping like lemmings over the microsoft cliff. Really...Just how much S**t are you all willing to eat from Bill and his henchmen?
It seems to me that there are an awfull lot of people who need to wake up. WE have the economic muscle but ONLY if we stop marching to Microsofts tune and buying their crap just because they release something "new". If you keep buying the same swiss chese crap, Microsoft will continue feeding more of it to you because they have no incentive to change and actually compete for your business.
If Microsoft were under pressure and there was a actual market for another OS, someone would step up to the plate, just like allways when there is money to be made. If there are so many smart people able to pick apart windoze, whay cant those people get together and use their intellects for something positive? Money, the great motivator. -- | |
