| While I'm waiting for Direct to respond... Sync Problems Hey everyone. Just thought I'd post my problem here while I'm waiting for Direct to respond. Maybe I can get lucky and the fine people here will be able to help me.
Speedstream 4100 w/ .53 firmware, SNR 11.0, Atten: 46.0, Pro plan for ~ 6 months (previously I was on the Express plan for ~ 1 year).
Yesterday evening (around 5:00 p.m.), for the first time, I noticed my modem losing sync (my connection up to this point has been rock solid). It was doing it randomly, sometimes about every minute, sometimes about every 30 seconds.
I checked the modem configuration to make sure that nothing had changed and it hadn't. I power cycled the modem. Still had the same issue. At the time, I was still running the .48 firmware version. I upgraded to the .53 firmware. Still had the same issue. Unplugged all devices from the phone jacks (only have two things, a phone and my satellite box). Still had the issue. Plugged the modem in to a different phone jack (two phone jacks in the office, each one has its' own home run shot of cat5 to the NID) in the office. Still had the issue. Plugged the modem in to the NID. Still had the issue.
It kept losing sync like that until about 1:00 a.m. Then the problem went away. Thought maybe it was just one of those things that happen.
Today, I come home, and noticed my modem was doing it again (and is still doing it as I type this). However, this time it is different. It loses sync every 37 seconds (exactly) as reported by the log.
So I went through the same song and dance as I did yesterday (power cycle, uplugging devices on telephone jacks, plugging in at the NID, etc.)
Was just wondering if anyone else has any other ideas? Maybe something I'm missing?
Thanks for the help. | |

| Re: While I'm waiting for Direct to respond... Sync Problems Perhaps Santa brought one of your neighbors a new toy, and it is generating a lot of electrical interference. For example, treadmills have caused this kind of problem for some people. -- Never underestimate the ability of a large organization to screw up | |

| Re: While I'm waiting for Direct to respond... Sync Problems If that is the case, then how does one go about tracking that problem down?
I fully understand what you are saying, I just find it odd that the down time (about 5:00 p.m.) for each day to be the same. I will know shortly if the back up and solid time (about 1:00 a.m.) holds true.
If they are using a treadmill that long, my god, they won't have to use it anymore after the first month...

| Re: While I'm waiting for Direct to respond... Sync Problems nwrickert: Thanks for the links. Started reading the dimmers, electronic switches, etc... And it came to me. My outside garage lights and porch lights are on a dusk/dawn w/ motion detection. When the motion is picked up, the lights go from half brilliance to full brilliance.
I turned off all the outside lights, and viola, the connection issue went away... I'm just curious as to why this started happening now, after 1.5 years of service...
Now I need to figure out which set it is...
Connections' been rock solid now for 2 hours...
Thanks for the help!!! | |

| Re: While I'm waiting for Direct to respond... Sync Problems I'm just curious as to why this started happening now, after 1.5 years of service...Probably a defective component, perhaps a recent failure. Or maybe a failed ground is allowing increased amounts of interference into the wiring.
I'm glad you have identified the cause. -- Never underestimate the ability of a large organization to screw up

| Re: While I'm waiting for Direct to respond... Sync Problems Well I verified today that it is my outside garage lights... So, for now, they are shut off. I will have to find some new fixtures.
Shadow: Yes the lights have a photocell and also have a voltage regulator (they come on full bright when motion is detected, after a certain time, they go back to half brilliance w/o motion).
Thanks to everyone for your help!!!

| A lighting device used from 5 pm to 1 am might be a possibility? Keeping with the season, maybe some outdoor blinking lights in the neighborhood. The wiring on those lights strung around eaves make some fine RFI antennas. | |

| Re: While I'm waiting for Direct to respond... Sync Problems d_l: I'll have to check in to that. As far as I know (I live on a golf course), the only lights that are still hanging are my own. They've been up since the day after Thanksgiving. None of them blink. But I will check and see.
Now that I mention living on a golf course, all of our cables here are buried. Can I just now be getting some magnetic interference from the underground power cables? I would think that I would've always had that issue if it were the case.
Thanks for the reply. | |
