[connectivity] PPPoE in CA?

I'm helping a friend get connected to VOL in Redondo Beach, CA. The installation from the CD failed when attempting to connect to the server. The DSL light is solid green, but the Internet light is off.

He has a Westell 6100. I connected to the modem and noticed that the WAN info says "DHCP - Not Tested" and "PPPoE - PPPoE Server Discovered". Does this make sense? I thought we had DHCP in this part of CA?

Re: [connectivity] PPPoE in CA?

I believe DSL customes in ex-GTE territories use DHCP while FIOS customers are using PPPoE like the East Coast regions.

What shows for an ipconfig /all? Possibly a Mac Bonding issue? Also, I think all FIOS is DHCP.

Do not run the CD.

There are a very limited number of PPPoE customers in CA from the couple of months when they attempted to convert it to PPPoE. It proved to not be a good idea, so they switched to MAC address binding the DHCP IP instead.

If this is new service, it should be DHCP. I would do a hard reset on the modem, with the button on the back, and see if it won't come up with a DHCP connection. Hold the button till all the lights go to flashing and stop. The router could have been tested PPPoE, prior to shipment. If some of the PPPoE customers are in his CO, it may have discovered the authentication server, before it pulled A DHCP IP.

His account may have been set up incorrectly. If you're not successful, someone can provide a link to set up a username and password online. You can try setting him up PPPoE, with those.

If you're not successful either way, you'll have to call tech support, to initiate a ticket, probably to have his account rebuilt, so it discovers the DHCP server, and retrieves a DHCP IP.

Re: [connectivity] PPPoE in CA?

Thanks for the input.

At this point I tried about everything, and now have to call tech support.

However I did find out that he was previously on Earthlink and canceled the account a few weeks ago. I suspect that may be the problem.

As far as trouble shooting, I reset the modem (many times) back to admin/password mode, tried PPPoE (I registered him through the online web site), tried DHCP using Bridge and Routed Bridge mode (he does not have his own router) and still nothing. The DSL light is on but I cannot "connect" to the internet. Irritating since I live right next door and my hookup was easy....
