Bragging rights ? Well, its not a whole lot to brag about, however, if AT&T uses IPTV/DSL as a stepping stone to IPTV/FTTH then its no big deal.
POTS/DSL --> POTS/VDSL2+ --> FTTH is a 'decent' plan as its phased and cost can be controlled.
POTS/DSL --> FTTH is big change.
I do agree that replacing POTS with FTTH will save in the long run, however, a large deployment isn't cheap, especially from the node to the home. The biggest change that is relatively cheap to deploy is bringing fiber to the node. The node to home is not so cheap. Since AT&T is reusing DSL/POTS its a way to redeploy. DSL is typically lower cost service than HSI over cable and fiber, and thats what they're using. Having 3Mbps at $25/month isn't bad. |
