| SecureIX removed their firewalls
»secureix.com:7080/blogs/general/item_5.htm
We've resumed work on the SecureIX project. We have a new server now and more IP's so we are no longer NATing users. This change will make P2P software work better, but users need to run their own software based firewalls. XP will do this by default, but Win2000/98 users should install a software based firewall.
It seemed a bit slower to connect than I remember it used to be. I first got a 778 error, then a 734, a 778 again, and on the fourth try got connected. No 800 errors though.
BT works fine now, as well as it ever did. But MSN still doesn't work when Secureix is connected. |

| Seems ALOT slower than it used to be.. And how do we make use of this if they aren't NATing us users; I mean, they aren't assigning each person who connects a unique port, and obviously they don't have 1 IP for every client.. So how the hell do we make use of this function? |

| reply to Kelaydi Too bad I can't even connect to »www.secureix.com in my browser, I even tried the IP directly (66.150.105.19) and no dice. Same goes for VPN.secureix.com . Is Rogers blocking access to SecureIX's IPs entirely? |

1 edit | The problem is entirely at secureix ...
www.secureix.com resolves to mail.secureix.com ...and there is no web server enabled on mail.secureix.com, so you can't browse anything, because there's nothing there to browse!
It's possible that they are denying connections from rogers customers. |

| reply to FR420 On January 4th they did a big reboot to try and troubleshoot some problem, which apparantly didn't get resolved. Maybe that problem is the reason their website is down? I haven't been able to refresh their RSS feed since January 5th, so I assume their website has been down since then. The last update they had, by the way, was "free email coming soon", which would explain the mail.secureix.com address.
I can still use their vpn service just fine though. BT, web browsing is all good. Only strange thing is that I can't get to Google. And even when I am connected, I still can't get to their website. And, MSN still doesn't work.
The reason they disabled their firewall was specifically to allow their customers to use P2P; and that's always been a main advertisement for their service, so I can't see them banning Rogers users just for P2P. And I figure if they were blocking Rogers users, they would block me from their vpn, not just from browsing their website. |

@nibble.net | You sure firewalls are down? BT says it's not connectable/reachable in any port >40000 (at least the ones I've tried)... |

| reply to Kelaydi It may have had issues earlier tonight, I recall having it IX connected and noticed that my torrents weren't upping at all. Had to go to work so didn't bother with it. At work now though so can't check it out because I can't remote into my PC when it's connected. :S Will check it out later. |

| It may be that Rogers and Cisco (pcube manufacturer) have worked out a way to throttle P2P over VPN. Probably the logic goes that legit vpn use is intermittent. If it goes on in a stream for 10 or more minutes, it's probably P2P.
Just a guess. |

Rogers is not the only isp on the planet the throttles P2P. So it would be better stated that Cisco might have worked out a way. Not Rogers and Cisco. I am sure if this is the case Rogers had nothing to do with it. |

| By that, I meant that Rogers "found way" involved getting cisco to do the job And Rogers "implemented" the found way! |

| said by sbrook :By that, I meant that Rogers "found way" involved getting cisco to do the job And Rogers "implemented" the found way! VPN packets are encrypted. They can not tell the difference between p2p traffic and ftp traffic (or any other traffic). They could block/throttle our VPN servers as they have static IP's. If that's the case I would be very interested in working with someone to prove/disprove it. Feel free to email six@secureix.com and we'll talk about it. |

sbrook Premium,Mod join:2001-12-14 H0H 0H0 | Well, six, given the fact that the pcubes now appear to be able to identify encrytpted BT (not inside VPN) it's not much of a stretch. |

You are not comparing apples to apples if you are comparing a VPN to something like Azureus encryption mode. An application leaves many other signs even if you can't read the data, for example a ssl web server stream is easy to detect, but put that stream inside a VPN tunnel and it's just data. I haven't looked closely at BT encryption mode, but my guess is they are using fixed size packets being sent in a certain order. The packet size alone will give a lot away and combine the port numbers and you could make a pretty good guess it's BT traffic.
A VPN encrypts everything. All IP traffic goes through the tunnel. The ISP can't even tell what IP you downloading from as it's all hidden in the tunnel. They only see traffic to the VPN server. |

| SecureIX working great for me here in Cambridge.
Could hardly get Torrents to connect to tracker.. if they did, I'm lucky if I could get 10k/s.
SecureIX working great and no need to encrypt torrent packet headers either!!
Only down side is SecureIX caps at 100k/s, but 100k/s is better than Zero!!
Thank you SecureIX for the solution. |

*Edit
I see it's a function of your UL speed for torrents on VPN but their Usenet service is a direct pipe FROM them. D_oh... |
