 [Broadband] Told to cut usage

InsightBB sent an email this morning stating this:

It has come to our attention that you have used the maximum amount of bandwidth possible over a 24-hour period and have maintained that usage over a period of 30 days.

Has anyone else received an email like this? I can't believe for one second that I've maintained that level of usage over 30 days considering that would have fallen over the holidays where we didn't even use our computers for a full week.

Does anyone know what the max amount of bandwidth they allow?

I might use the Insight Internet more than most on the network and I never got any e-mail asking me to cut usage. If I did I would do a PR campaign to get press, radio and TV attention to make sure Insight would look bad.

Contact your local Lexington media outlets so Insight can get some bad PR.

uhm i to know that i use my connection very heavily and all most on a 24/7 basis. but i have not received any thing like that before. you should call them up and ask what they mean by this email you received and what is the max amount? since this is a broadband connection and that it is a 24/7 type of connection as well. all so is it a real email from them? since i have received some phony emails that i have not sent or received.

Does their TOS even state any limit? Sure it says they can restrict access as they please, but a maximum?..

I guess it could be read that they are implying that you are fully using all the bandwith possible, ie 10/1 all day everyday. It may be that you have some malware or someone is tapping into your wireless, though if your pipe was choked I am sure you would have noticed it. Perhaps they duped your IP or somehow lost track of who was who over the course of the upgrade.

I would call them and see what is going on.

Just got this in my email:
Dear Insight Broadband Customer,

To ensure that all Insightbb.com customers consistently receive the highest quality service available, Insight monitors network usage to ensure that usage activity does not violate our policies and procedures as detailed in our Acceptable Use Policy.

It has come to our attention that you have used the maximum amount of bandwidth possible over a 24-hour period and have maintained that usage over a period of 30 days.

Excessive bandwidth usage places a burden on the network and is in violation of the Insightbb.com Acceptable Use Policy see sections vii and viii.

vii. restrict, inhibit or otherwise interfere with the ability of any other person, regardless of intent, purpose or knowledge, to use or enjoy the Service, including, without limitation, posting or transmitting any information or software which contains a worm, virus or other harmful feature, or generating levels of traffic sufficient to impede others' ability to send or retrieve information;

viii. restrict, inhibit, interfere with or otherwise disrupt or cause a performance degradation or manipulation, regardless of intent, purpose or knowledge, to the Service or any Insight (or Insight supplier) host, server, backbone network, node or service, or otherwise cause a performance degradation or manipulation to any Insight (or Insight supplier) facilities used to deliver the Service.

We have found most excessive bandwidth users are running servers, using Newsgroups or using online file sharing programs such as KaZaa, BitTorrent and others.

We feel it our responsibility to alert you to the dangers of online file sharing applications and offer suggestions as to what can be done to protect yourself as well as reduce the amount of bandwidth being used by your account. For instance:

* There are a number of viruses designed specifically to spread through peer-to-peer networks. Your best defense is to keep your anti-virus software updated. If a file you download seems smaller in size than expected, you should avoid running it. Many of the viruses that exist at the moment will rename themselves to mimic popular programs, music, or videos in hopes that the victim will open it.
* Most of the file sharing applications contain "spyware" that is used by affiliates and marketing companies. Besides being an invasion of your privacy, many End User License Agreements (EULAs) grant these companies the power to use your extra bandwidth, processor cycles, memory, and drive space as they see fit.
* Copyright infringement caused by sharing copyrighted material.

For help in disabling file sharing software:

Thank You,

Insight Broadband

Shouldn't the title of this be "Insight is starting to follow others leads by using Hidden Caps".

Greg_Z I agree the title should be "Insight is starting to follow others leads by using Hidden Caps". I watch lot of videos and make phone calls using my webcam and I'm sure I must be one of the high users of Insight and I have never received one of those ugly e-mails from Insight. I strongly suggest those that get those e-mails to do a PR campaign about Insight unfair practices by contacting the local radio, TV and newspapers in your town.

If Insight is setting cap rates, they should state what the caps are and provide a way for the customers to track their usage. Insight also should be required to say in ads that they are a cap rate service instead of implying they are not a cap rate service. Sound like a little ad fraud is going on with Insight.

I received the same message this morning, and it appears that my bandwidth has been crippled as a result. Anyone else having similar issues?

:::.. testmy.net test results ..:::
Download Connection is:: 645 Kbps about 0.65 Mbps (tested with 748 kB)
Download Speed is:: 79 kB/s
Upload Connection is:: 918 Kbps about 0.9 Mbps (tested with 1496 kB)
Upload Speed is:: 112 kB/s
Tested From:: http://testmy.net (Server 2)
Test Time:: 2007/01/20 - 3:45pm
D-Validation Link:: http://testmy.net/stats/id-RJ9MPG6L4
U-Validation Link:: http://testmy.net/stats/id-JFBRZP761
User Agent:: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8.1.1) Gecko/20061204 Firefox/2.0.0.1 [!]

15 minutes after posting this, I received a call from Insight informing me that my upload bandwidth usage was too high. System flagged my account because I uploaded 5 GB in 24 hours. It appears that my usage is affecting other users on the network, and I have to control my usage. This is a crock, why give me the bandwidth in the first place if they are not going to allow me to use it!!!!! The tech stated that since switching to the new higher speeds , that Insight would be forced to monitor bandwidth usage more closely.

So, that is why eveyone thinks that Insight sucks. Maybe that is why Iggy has been having all of those mysterious speed issues while on Insight's Highspeed network.

The new marketing campaign for Insight is "Beware, Digital 2.0 does not include you, if you share your connection with others!"

If I get an email from Insight like that, then they had better explain it right away when I call them as to what it means. If they can't, they can say buh-bye to me using both their internet and cable TV services.

@insightbb.com
I got the email this morning and then I got a phone call from them as well.

Don't you just love dishonest business practices? Insight says they provide 10/1 service and then buries a very vague statement in a policy that is a sub policy to their TOS that says not to use your service excessively without giving any explanation as to what that means.

How can they be selling you 10/1 and then claim that you are interfering with other customers if you use it. They should simply claim that they don't want your business because they really cannot provide 10/1 service to people who intend to use it.

Not since DSL become more widely spread in this area. When I did have them, they where one cut above Green County CATV broadband service. I will never return to Insight ever again. Only have them for CATV, and that is all I am going to have them for.

Thanks...I was just wondering "why" the comments about who or what is happening with InsightBB since it has no effect on you.

I max out my connection on the newsgroups often. 1.2MBp/s. I downloaded 96.86GB in almost 3 days once, or so newsbin told me I did.

Anyway point is if insight limits my bandwidth I will move to another service provider. I live in town and near a DSL office. Which is pretty good considering they give 4mbps connections there. I have a friend on DSL and he gets a constant good speed with no problems.

If they keep this up they will lose a customer. So all I got to say is if I receive a letter I will be done with Insight. What a great way to lose customers, of course Mr. Wilner has no comment over this whole thing so far has he?

I am an avid gamer. On a daily basis I usually download over 30-40GB of trailers, and patches. It isn't everyday but I am constantly on my pc using it. My as well move to the UK, at least they allow 300GB caps in some areas of that. Torrents, File sharing, and other programs have been a big part of what I do when I am on the pc. I mostly game, and usually when I game I run a server. Insight is bsing they gotta be. I mean come on they can limit the bandwidth to something, it was there huge idea to go to the new speed. I was just fine frankly at my damn 4mbps. At least I got that. Hell how can I max out my connection when I can barely load internet pages due to high packet loss. I can't even use teamspeak because of the packet loss I've got. Its total bs. a 15-30% packet loss all the time now. For days its been like this.

This service is becoming more and more like Adelphia. Wilner I don't know what the hell you are trying to pull but cut it out. Give me back my old connection and take away this stupid limit. What good is customer service when they go and limit my bandwidth?

If your service can't handle the bandwidth then take us all back down. Your in a bind and we can tell it. Comcast, Timewarner, none of these companies limit their speed.

You all (talking to the posters for this topic)are not getting the point, Insight is trying to give us a better(stable) connection. I myself have uploaded about 22gig in (1)66hr session and then in another 28 hr session 12gig all this in less than a month.Approx all in 3 weeks.Insight is sending those e-mails to people that are leaving there connection on 24/7 for more than 30 days.All those people are doing is causing a problem for others (most likely teens)that don't know how to use P2P software the right way, 1-1 share ratio then disconnect.So I don't understand why all of you are up in arms about this? Maybe some of you need some help with the setup of P2P software that you are using?

Maybe someone can enlighten me?

Well in all fairness Mr Wilmer is probably off today enjoying his weekend. The thread is only a day old.

None the less I don't expect much of a comment. The smart people that research what connection to get will come here, see these threads, and sign up with sb.. I mean ATT.
