[Connectivity] Online gaming issue: DNAS, TW, Adelphia

This may be an isolated issue related to one particular game from one particular manufacturer but I'll toss it out there in case someone in the bowels of Adelphia/Time Warner tech support is actually reading this. Something happened in the last week where my game quit working online (ok ok Star Wars:Battlefront on PS2). I hadn't played since last weekend 1/21 and I got the problem late Friday night 1/26. I changed nothing on my home wireless network, the game was connecting to the game server, but I was getting a DNAS authentication error (612). Basically Sony's security check to see if you've got a legit copy of the game you are trying to play. Many online articles about the problem suggested: power cycle all internet devices (modem, router, and adapters) which I did several times. The next step up was turning off your firewall. No effect. The articles suggested if the above didn't work you should change all your router settings, rebuild, update, and manually set port forwarding. Oh, boy. I understand the concept but I am also of the old school if it ain't broke don't fix.

What changed? The game was working fine, then not. I've had connection issue before where the game wouldn't connect, period. Usually temporary, a PS2 reboot later and I was good. Every once in awhile if the power winked out or I kicked the plug to the wireless adapter I'd have to power cycle everything and I'd be up and running again. I'm hesitant to make firmware upgrades to the router and monkey around with the port forwarding. Most of the articles I've read say you have to have a static IP address for his to work. I'm also leery because I've received different sets of tcp codes from different sources. The game host (GameSpy) gave particular codes. The game's own manual had other codes. When I called Sony (SCEA) support they gave me a phone book of ports to forward. Online sources matched some of the above, gave different ports. Hmmmm.

More monkeying yesterday (Sat 1/27) and a few phone calls. I started by calling Time Warner, who gave me the 888-683-1000 number. The guy who I got transferred to said "yeah, we've gotten a lot of these calls recently, it's probably the game host, call back and see if our engineers figure out the problem." After that I made the call to Sony and (after coughing up my phone number and zip code) got very little help. The lady said I had to call the ISP and have them open the ports for me. ??????

So here's the kicker. I gave up yesterday afternoon and decided to wait and see if the problem would fix itself. Well, I power cycled the internet components this morning (1/28), fired up the PS2, and voila, problem fixed. Connected to the server, DNAS checked, and I was playing the game. No connection issues, everything is fine. I turned the PS2 off, took a break, and was able to reconnect afterwards. Game was still working fine.

I tried the unit again at about 8pm. IT'S BROKEN AGAIN. The PS2 connects to the game server, reaches the DNAS check, and times out (error 612 again). Bzzzzt. The only thing different is that the DNAS check now counts up to 76 seconds before it times out. The first version of the failure had a count up to 31 seconds.

SO, either some engineer at Sony is screwing around with their DNAS check, or GameSpy is doing something, or Adelphia/TimeWarner is messing with the ports.

Any thoughts?? I'm I a newb lamer? I tried calling the 683-1000 number and the recording says "due to unusually high traffic we are unable to answer your call at this time."

The "official" word is that its an issue that was caused by the earthquake in Thailand. Some major fiber got damaged and were repaired. Anyone that is being routed through these fibers are intermittently having issues connection to servers over seas. Some ISP's are affected and others are not. Just depends how your being routed. Your not the only one having these issues. Hope this helps.

ROFLMAO Yeah im sure an earthquake in Thailand is affecting our gaming here in Buffalo. Thats the best excuse I heard all week. Im not making fun of you bufbandit. I know your relaying info from Adelphia/Time Warner. Anyways Mizzle I didnt see if you mentioned connecting your PS2 directly to the modem to see if that works when your having these problems. I play the same game quite often and even post up my own game server for myself and friends. Its called War. The problem most likely is caused by Bad software. The game is notorius for being unfinished before release. While it is a good game and loads of fun to play problems surface now and again due to the software being unfinished in my opinion. As far as your router goes. If I were you Id seriously consider getting to know how to configure your router. Its not hard and only frightening before you learn how easy it is. Think of the router as a big wall with tons of doors. Each of those doors represent a port and its your job to open and close those doors. Its almost that simple. Id be more than happy to help you just let me know.

Why not??? Obviously I had something to say on the subject. Why would you waste your time asking why i posted?? Do you ask everyone why they post? What do you care? Mind your own business.

To be honest you had nothing worthwile to say, either then or now, but thanks for your contribution.

The issue is now resolved.
