[TSC] Maybe I'm just blind.

But, I didn't see the topic in the FAQ.

This weekend I finally had a eureka moment and got TSC installed on two of my linux boxes.

I run Gentoo and the installation GUI was dying on me so I was forced to go with a manual install.

I ran and completed a good number of units on both of those machines but in the past 48 hours nothing has shown up on the website for activity with those nodes. Though, an old node I brought back online (also on Gentoo) is reporting and updating on the website on a regular basis.

The only difference being that the old node is using the supplied JRE and the other new ones are using the newest SUN-JDK that is in portage.

Is it possible that it will just take a little while for these nodes to start showing activity? You know, like validating the results or something or should I just go for a reinstall?

Yep. I did that right away.

42022 is the resurrected node.

202012 is my laptop (currently running Windows but it ran linux and TSC most of the weekend)

202015 is one of my other linux boxes that has run all weekend.

try tail -f on the d2ol.results.txt (something like that). See if things like right... should be going through all 20 conformers for each candidate.

Thanks. I'll give that a shot during rehearsal tonight. I'll have my laptop with me so I can plug it in. I did, however, have them controller in various ways..

nice -n 19 /opt/CommunityTSC/TSC/D2OL
nice -n 19 /opt/CommunityTSC/TSC/D2OL controller:file
nice -n 19 /opt/CommunityTSC/TSC/D2OL controller:file &
nice -n 19 /opt/CommunityTSC/TSC/D2OL controller:cli

Except the times I ran it with the file controller in a background process I could watch as it worked through all 20 conformers. I'll see about installing with the included JVM on the laptop and see if that works. If so, then we may have to add to the FAQ that it doesn't like the newest 1.5.0.10 dev-java/sun-jdk package in portage.

Edit : I made NO sense at all before, did I?

Okay. I'm making SOME progress.

It looks like on the machines that I'm having trouble with that the link for libstdc++ is not there.

I got home late after rehearsal last night so I could only do so much until I accidentally kicked my surge protector taking three computers, DSL modem and router down. After that I just got my main UD cruncher and resurrected TSC cruncher back online and called it a night.

I just have to read up on the man pages on ldconf and get that link working with my setup and I think I should be good to go. How I wish someone would make an ebuild for this. I might have to learn portage just for this very reason. Wouldn't THAT be cool.

Well, I finally figured it out using the links provided. And I see my units finally going through... Well, finally may be an odd way of putting it since I had it do 1 unit and connect and it showed up by the time I was able to log in. Though, something is now borked with my computer when getting into gdm so I'm posting using links2. It's MUCH more difficult finding things this way.

But, anyways... After emerging lib-compat it just fired right up and worked.

And here's the screenshot to prove that now I (and the team) are getting credit for the work some of my linux boxes are doing. Now, I just have to get Retro and Kayak running on UD (three nodes total) and two more as yet unnamed boxes (dual P3 1.4 GHz and P4 2.66/533) online running TSC.

So, here are my instructions on setting this up on my gentoo boxes.

Obviously, you're gonna need gentoo installed. I then installed the 1.5.0.10 Java-SDK from Sun.

emerge sun-jdk

Then I downloaded the guiless installer without JVM.

It's this one :

»www.childhooddiseases.org/instal···C.tar.gz

Once that downloaded to my Desktop I moved it to /opt. This is just a preference on my part. But, it makes sense to me.

mv /home/dan/Desktop/guilessInstallCommunityTSC.tar.gz /opt

Then I navigate to /opt

cd /opt

Unzip the file.

gunzip ./guilessInstallCommunityTSC.tar.gz

Untar the file.

tar -xf ./guilessInstallCommunityTSC.tar

Now I can edit my D2OL.lax file. I use nano as my editor.

nano -w /opt/CommunityTSC/TSC/D2OL.lax

I then set my variables in the file...

lax.dir=/opt/CommunityTSC/TSC/
lax.nl.current.vm=/opt/sun-jdk-1.5.0.10/jre/bin/java
lax.root.install.dir=/opt/CommunityTSC

Then I install lib-compat.

emerge lib-compat

From there I just run the client the first time in CLI mode since you have to enter your email address. Also, it did kind of puke at me and give me what appeared to be errors when trying to load Xlib for the screen and some java class issues around that. It'll sit there for a minute or two while it straightens it out. Just be patient.

/opt/CommunityTSC/TSC/D2OL controller:cli

Once it connects and you are in, then I just type exit at the next command prompt.

Then to start the process as a background process to set and forget I issue the following command.

nohup nice -n 19 /opt/CommunityTSC/TSC/D2OL controller:file &

The nohup means it will continue on even when you shell has closed or you have logged out. Setting my nice level to 19 means it is running at a really low priority. The ampersand at the end tells your computer to run it as a background process. I use the controller:file so it will just go on automatic pilot. You can stop the process by simply editing the /opt/CommunityTSC/TSC/control.prp file. After a minute or two it will shut down nicely.

I should be setting up a new machine in the next week or two. I'll take screenshots of the process (probably from Gnome) so you can see it from beginning to end.

Oddly enough I was using links2 to download the file. I'll spare everyone "screenshots" from that and either provide a direct download link, screenshot from firefox or both.
