Comcast Admits Caps @ 200GB/month!!

Apparently its 200GB. Linky down the bottom has screen cap of chat.

From the Article:
After hearing yet another story of someone hitting the "invisible wall" on Comcast and getting the boot for a year, as a valued Comcast customer (I pay one of my scripters Internet bill, so the account is in my name) I decided to see what Comcast support officially had to say about the issue. I made up a story about a friend that had been booted off, and after a few minute wait to get into chat, the below transpired. Sorry about the image, it turns out you cant copy/paste a Comcast chat after it has finished. (don't mind the spelling and typos, I was using my notebook on my lap. I'm sure you can all read "typing fast speak" anyways)

Sorry, there is no "Cap".
Depending on your market/neighborhood, you might be able to download 300GB per month "Without degrading the network" and be fine.

Then again, your area might take a hit with 200GB per month.

Until Comcast Officially declares that there *IS* a bandwidth cap, it is dependent on area. No Set Cap.

I'm sure someone here will post soon that they hit 200+ without "The Call".

The title of this thread, while catchy, is a bit misleading. The rep you questioned said only that he *thought* there might be a cap of around 200GB/month. That's a far cry from Comcast officially announcing or admitting to a hard quota.

so far my record was 220 in one month...(had a lot of systems come in for maintenance and my local windows update server crapped out on me)

I find it hard to approach 100GB's even with pretty heavy traffic (excluding mishaps like windows update server kicking the bucket)

EDIT: I did the math and if you downloaded 100GB's exactly in one 30 day month you would be able to download 3.33GB's DAILY

Re: Comcast Admits Caps @ 200GB/month!!

well so! 200gb/month amounts to 6.45gb a day in a 31 day month. I can't imagine anyone downloading that much in one day, much less evrey day of the month.

so...if they have proffered this vague "don't download too much" limit but they don't tell you how much is too much, why don't you all just get together and sue them?

This is like posting a speed limit sign that says "don't drive too fast" and nothing else - and then issuing tickets for people you feel are driving too fast".

It seems contingent that if they are going to hold you to a standard of behavior - that they legally need to tell you what that standard is - EVEN if it varies with your location.

As a current adelphia customer and soon to be comcast customer who could easily bust that "too much" limit I am concerned about this.

Any attorney want to rope all the folks who have been "cut off" together into a class action lawsuit? Could be quite a money maker for you!

Well, I'm sure there is a lot of people out there that download more than me but my personal best (if you want to call it that) is nearly 400GB...and not the first problem, no calls, no letter, nothing...but then again that is my area.

Try using vongo and GameTap for one month, you could come pretty close to 160 GB w/o much effort... there are tons of high bandwidth legit apps in the works.. what if we add on HD video downloads from xbox 360.

It might not seem like it now, but 200GB isn't a lot, and is even less depending on the number of people living in your house.

200 Gigs per month is an ISSUE?

I tried hard, really really hard, and the most I've ever downloaded in one month was 31GB. Understand, I was literally downloading anything I could get my hands on.

If someone downloads 200GB in a month they not only deserve a letter, they deserve a warning that if it is repeated the service will be cancelled.

Even courts have rulled "unlimited" does not mean "unreasonable" use by a customer.

On those unlimited long distance cell phone accounts for example. Wanna bet if you used long distance for a whole month that the company wouldn't let you know you were abusing their service?

They should set a cap per month. Once you reach the cap they should throttle the speed down to 10% of the full tier speed until 30 days has elapsed.

I know I've made many friends with this post. Show me some love.

EDIT: I also wanted to mention that most people, yes most, do not even have 200GB hard drives. I understand people will claim they have 500GB+ drives but you are a minority of users. I would assume most people burn DVD's once the hard drive gets full. 5 to 10 years ago the entire concept of a 200GB limit would have seemed like crazy talk. The mere fact that you could download HALF of 200GB is simply amazing if you sit and think about it.

I may have gained even more friends with the extra comments. Send some love.

You know, as much as there's the usual thick layer of ambiguity and "tech" professionalism that seem typify all responses to "I can't help you with that," that tech seemed to be the most verbose of all of the dialogs I've seen.

Interesting to some extent. Whoever that was that was speaking raised some good questions, namely, how can we follow the rules if we don't even know what the rules are? I'm not interested in starting a discussion to answer that rhetorical question, but from a moral standpoint, it leads to a number of interesting places.

What courts would those be?

Kiss Kiss Hug. XXX OOO

I think the question is why this is not advertised right up front while they're touting the ability to download music, movies and That Which Is Not Spoken About, not where the specific line is. If there was a line in that "highspeed" ad copy which says "subject to usage restrictions" in the same typeface and in the same sentence this discussion would be entirely moot.

According to Giganews, I'm approaching 1.3TB for this month of service. If Comcast acts on a set bandwidth limit, they must be taking a nap in my area.

I think over 200GB should be considered abuse at this time.... In the future when there is IPTV and high quality (HD) streams online, then I think this number should be higher.

At this time, even a household of heavy users should be able to get by well under that.

Simple: they're marketing the impression of unlimited without stating it. Any mention of caps or limits is a deal buster to the fantasy they _are_ selling. Yanno, the silver goo travelling at light-speed, 'hot chicks' answering the CS lines and techs in pressed browns rolling out like roving bands of experts in shiny new vans -- that bullshi stuff.
