Comcast & using too much bandwidth

Ok it looks like Digg & the consumerist picked up a story about someone in Utah. »comcastissue.blogspot.com/2007/0···007.html

that apparently downloaded 300+ gigs one month & there only option is a $1700 setup & $1000 a month bus acct.

So I had a few questions:

1) When someone talks to CS, do the CS reps not have access to the magic # or are they told what they are & then told do not tell the customer.

2) If They only really want you to do is surf the internet, check email, & occasionally view videos why don't they offer a slower speed plan. I know people who would go for a lower speed plan if Comcast would offer it.

3) I heard Comcast is going to start offering movie viewing or downloads (I don't remember which one) What is someone signs up for that & wants to watch a bunch of movies that month. I'm not sure of how big the size of the avg movie, but I can see someone getting a letter & the customer calling to find out why they have been disconnected to have a conversation like this.

Cust: I'm calling to find out why my service isn't working?
Rep: Let me check
Rep: OK is says you DL'd xxx gigs last month. That is over the limit

Cust: The only thing I was doing was using your movie service

Rep: I don't care what the reason is, you used too much & we cut you off. Deal with it

4) I got an ad for their phone service. It said unlimited local & long distance. I looked at the fine print to see if it actually gave a per month minutes allowance & there was none listed. I can see someone signing up who has a son or daughter going over their cell minutes to save $$ & since its listed as unlimited, have that same person rake up like 15,000 minutes for the month to be cut off on the phone service also.

At the risk of getting yelled at...

*FOR ME* I pay for the extra speed so when I do decide to download ... TDU/Carbon/Crysis(soon), it will get here within minutes - not days!

I do not try to build my DVD collection... movies suck!
"Too Much Bandwidth" will never be used to describe me.
*I* will never get "The Call".

No idea about CS and asking about abuse... I don't abuse the network. Probably never will.

Hello, cscottm, I notice you are not a frequent poster in the Comcast HSI Forum, so you may not be aware how frequently people start bandwidth abuse related topics here.

You may or may not get good responses to your questions. One reason why not may be that regulars here have responded to the same or similar questions quite frequently.

If you haven't been a frequent reader here and want to know what has been said here in the recent past, take some time to read some of the topics listed here: »Comcast High Speed Internet FAQ »Does Comcast have bandwidth use limits?

Please let us know if you still have questions which haven't already been addressed many times already.

As has been reported, the "magic #" is not a specific static amount. It is based on a percentage above the average for a given area. Not only will this # vary from area to area, it will vary from month to month. If the average for a given area is 80GB per month and you are downloading in excess of 400 to 500GB, you will probably be contacted. This has more to do with being in the top 1% in downloading for a given area and with negative impact to others in your area and nothing to do with hitting an arbitrary download amount.

Yes I haven't posted too many messages in the Comcast Forum, but I have been reading some of the messages from the past on this subject matter. When I originally posted the questions, I was more doing it in a opinion type question, kind of like when someone questions why someone is doing something.

Mod Note: Double post removed. See this post ---> »msg deleted

Please don't post the same thing in multiple threads. I'm closing this one since we don't need two bandwidth threads at the same time, please.
