Post Feb 13 Windows Updates: Lost Printers!

Anyone else loose all of their printers after the latest Windows Updates that came out on Feb 13? I have Windows XP SP2 Home. This morning I found out that all of my installed printers, including my Adobe PDF distiller which is installed, were completely deleted! The last time I printed or converted a file to a PDF was before the Feb 13 updates.

I used the System Restore feature to go back to a System Restore point before the Windows updates. Voila! My printers and Adobe PDF function are back. Coincidence? Anyone else have this problem?

I haven't installed any new software recently, and I did confirm from the Add or Remove Programs Control Panel that the Feb 13 Windows Updates are now gone.

MSFT 2/13/07 updates successfully installed on my XPPro-SP2 box. The printer works fine and I see no problems with anything else, so far.

No problems here.

As annoying as it is to do, you could reinstall the updates one at a time (figures there would be a ton of them this time ) to try to find out if one of them is indeed the problem.

Thanks for the suggestions. I will try that. Yeah, it stinks that there are 10 updates, by my count, that I have to troubleshoot.

Thanks to everyone who replied.

only one had to do with PDF if that helps you.

Microsoft on Tuesday released a bevy of patches, including three critical patches for the Microsoft Windows operating system, two for Office, and a critical patch for its antivirus and anti-malware software products.

Altogether, twelve patches were released, and the Redmond company finally addressed the issues within Microsoft Word and Office that were being exploited in zero-day attacks. Both Office patches dealt with code execution issues.

The first patch dealt with a total of six vulnerabilities within Word, including malformed string, data structure, drawing object, and function issues, as well as issues with Word Count and Word macros. The patch is intended for Word 2000, 2002, and 2003, as well as Works Suites 2004 through 2006 and Office for Mac.

Also patched in a separate fix were flaws within PowerPoint and Excel. Both concern malformed record issues that could put users at risk of a code execution attack, Microsoft said.

Of the Windows patches, a fix has been released for the HTML Help ActiveX control which could allow an attack to execute arbitrary code by visiting a specially crafted webpage.

Flaws within Microsoft's Data Access Components were also remedied, as well as a new cumulative security update for Internet Explorer. That patch fixes two issues with the COM object, as well as an issue with FTP server usage.

The last of the critical issues fixes an issue within Microsoft's antivirus software. According to an advisory, the flaw exists in how the Malware Protection Engine processes PDF files. If a specially crafted file is sent through, it could open up a code execution risk.
Microsoft Malware Protection Engine Vulnerability - CVE-2006-5270:

A remote code execution vulnerability exists in the Microsoft Malware Protection Engine because of the way that it parses Portable Document Format (PDF) files. An attacker could exploit the vulnerability by constructing a specially crafted PDF File that could potentially allow remote code execution when the target computer system receives, and the Microsoft Malware Protection Engine scans, the PDF file.

The remaining patches were all rated important: four remote code execution vulnerabilities in Step-by-Step Interactive Training, Microsoft OLE Dialog, Microsoft MFC, and RichEdit. All, however require user interaction in order to be exploited.

Two elevation of privilege risks were also remedied, which existed in the Windows Shell and Image Acquisition.

Of the patches, security firm PatchLink put the highest priority on the fix for Microsoft's Data Access Components, saying the vulnerability could put at risk secure databases.

"An attacker successfully exploiting this vulnerability could take complete control of an affected system to install programs to view, change, or delete data; or create new accounts with full user rights," vice presdent of security Technologies Chris Andrew said.

"Organizations should review the specifics of this security bulletin and to ascertain level of risk, especially for organizations that are dealing with mission critical or customer data," he continued.

No printer woes either, but for the third consecutive Crash Tuesday when Microsoft releases updates, my ISP POP3 email account gets fubared. The only remedy (even though I back up email) is to uninstall and reinstall Zone Alarm.

I found the problematic Windows Updates that wiped out my printers on my first attempt to troubleshoot: KB928090 Cumulative Security Updates for Internet Explorer 7.

Nothing on the MS support page at »support.microsoft.com/?kbid=928090 mentions this issue. I did leave MS feedback about this issue from that web page.

Note, my printers were not restored after uninstalling this update from the Add/Remove Control Panel and restarting, nor were they restored after using System Restore to a point yesterday when I'm sure that my printers were working again. But System Restore worked yesterday -- very strange.

Frustrating, but I will probably install all of these updates and then reinstall my printers and Adobe Printers function.

Internet Explorer 7 strikes again! That's been nothing but a pain in the rear, IMO. It leaves all sorts of weird issues in its wake, and this is apparently a new one to add to the list.

I do....HP Officejet 5610 All-in-One. As I mentioned, I haven't had any problem (knock wood) with updates affecting my printer.

I have an HP printer (however, I'm not running IE7, so I guess that doesn't count! ). It's still working fine, thank you.

What did bother me about the update was what's shown in the screenshot I took when it happened. UnHackMe defintely didn't like something about one of them, anyway.

I don't think the UnHackMe forum is back up yet, so I haven't been able to ask them about it. Pete

I also lost access to my printer after doing the updates last night.

I do not have IE7 installed and never have, so it is something else causing the problem for me. I did update Adobe Reader last night though.

My guess is KB924667. MFC update.
Brother printers (for one, at least) have had issues before with MFC & SP2.
