Let's see...what is going on right now? Hubby is happy back at work. I am slowly figuring out what to do with myself while home during the day. Son is doing fabulous in school. What more could one ask? The only thing I can think of is that upcoming scans show hubby to be cancer-free. That is what I hope and wish for and what consumes my sleepless nighttime thoughts.
On the gardening front; the yard guy's son or minion weed-ate (eated) my new Lantana plants. I hope to catch them when they come again to point it out because there are still a few stems left that could come back. The herbs, tomatoes, and radishes are thriving so far.
Tonight I made Beer Braised Country Style Ribs for the 2nd time and they are a hit with the menfolk. Once something is made twice it will go in to the rotation. I am getting kind of burned out on cooking. My menfolk are not very open-minded about what they will eat and my choices are limited. Bummer.
I got a spiral-sliced ham for Easter and am planning on using Aretha Franklin's "Queen of Soul" ham glaze on it. I know a normal ham would be more moist, but whatever. My family's favorite au gratin potatoes and green beans will be the side dishes. I will make a pound cake and then my own version of this:»www.recipezaar.com/The-Ultimate-···ke-24672 for dessert.
That's all I've got right now. | posted Thursday April 9th, @10:12PM

I have to update this once in a while or I get gently nagged by some people.
Things are humming along rather well. Hubby is back at work and digging it. Son is doing great in school and has been asked to join the academic decathletes. This involves interacting with other people and he is willing to do it!
The herbs are growing like crazy and I've already had to cut the basil and used it in a chicken cacciatore. The chives pod never sprouted, so I emailed them and they are sending me a new chives pod. The cilantro has kind of tumped over for some reason. The reason could be that I had to make up that pod myself because my kit did not come with cilantro. I have planted some radishes and green onions in a planter outside and they sprouted within 3 days. The tomato plants are growing and have buds already. There is also a leftover planter from last year that had a grape tomato plant in it. The dead stump of that plant is now growing tomatoes!
No new culinary exploits to speak of. I haven't made the pita bread yet. It is hard to justify making all the things I want to make when I know my picky menfolk will not eat it. We did fine tune the Ina Garten recipe for Easy Sticky Buns. I made them several times and always baked them less that the recommended time. Even so, they always seemed burny on the top. Hubby suggested something that worked out great so that will be the new and improved sticky bun recipe.
There is one recipe I am thinking about and it sounds so good, but I have not tried it yet. It involves bagels, eggs, cheese, and bacon. I almost went for it today because I had an everything bagel, some day I will go for it.

Sunday again! Now it is too cold and rainy to plant those darn bedding plants sitting on the front porch. It should get better soon, I suppose. The herbs planted in the AeroGarden are coming along famously.
Yesterday, the three of us went to lunch with an old friend of Hubby's and his family. It was nice and we all got along very well. I might end up going out for Girl's Night Out with the wife. I suggested we all go see the new Ghengis Kahn exhibit at the museum sometime. This is a good thing for us as we don't socialize much.
For the time being, there is nothing major going on health-wise and things are working their way toward normal and going back to work. Hubs is looking forward to it. I won't be going back to the job I had, but will be on the lookout for stuff to do. It would be great if I could relax and let my guard down, but I remain vigilant and I think hubby does too. Weird-ass dreams continue to plague me and I'm lethargic most of the day.
Today I made breakfast tacos around 11AM. Dinner was corned beef, cabbage, potatoes, and carrots. We have some oatmeal raisin cookies for dessert. My next new dish to try is going to be pita bread. I found a recipe that looks very easy to do. Once I try that out I'm going for Gyros. Yum! I already make a killer tzatziki sauce. | posted Sunday March 15th, @10:11PM

It has been a busy, but nice weekend.
Yesterday we went to Home Depot and bought some lantana and other low flowering bedding plants to replant the bed in front of the porch. The roofers smashed everything in that bed to smithereens. We also got some tomato plants to plant in the Earth Box. When we got home Hubby cleaned out the grill and while he was doing that I pruned the roses and pulled up dead stalks from the canna lilies. We grilled lobster tails, chicken, and steak along with some potatoes in foil for dinner.
Today I made sticky buns for breakfast, started the laundry, and then called Hubby down to eat. Later all three of us worked outside planting the tomatoes and pruning some bushes. We did not get around to doing the front bed because it got too darn hot and humid. I had sweat pouring down my face. Yuck.
Baby lamb chops are marinating in olive oil, lemon juice, minced garlic, salt/pepper, fresh rosemary, and thyme. We are going to grill them along with some asparagus. I'm cooking some parsleyed new potatoes on the stove and have strawberries sliced up for mini strawberry shortcakes. We are pretty hungry...forgot to eat lunch!
I'll finish up the laundry after dinner. | posted Sunday March 8th, @07:34PM

| Finally, she called. Catfish has a thickening of the bladder wall probably caused by chronic cystitis. She also has a loss of kidney function and is going to need fluids every few days and then weekly. | posted Thursday March 5th, @06:09PM

I don't get it. Why won't the vet call me back about Catfish? She had her ultrasound a week ago today. The said it would be a day or two for the results to be read by a radiologist. I called and the receptionist said the results were back and the dr. would call me...that was Friday. I called again and was told the dr. would be in a 2PM and she would have her call me...still no call.
I'm trying not to read anything in to this, but it isn't easy. I cannot think of one valid reason for the dr. to avoid my calls. I'm not sure what to do next.

| I have yet to get used to the hubster sitting there next to me guffawing at something on TV and I don't know WTH is going on. We both know that I don't appreciate most of the TV shows he likes and have accommodated for that by him wearing wireless headphones. I can mute the sound if I don't want to hear it and I do so quite often. Still, it startles me when he does that, which he just now did. | posted Sunday March 1st, @11:12PM

No word on Catfish yet. She spent another several hundred dollar day at the vet on Wednesday. The Dr. said she wanted to send the ultrasound off to a certified vet radilogist for reading and it could take a couple of days. They did call today to ask how was she was doing and mentioned the results were back, but the Dr. hadn't had a chance to look at them...that was at 9:30 this morning. Monday, I guess.
Today we did our taxes for the first time as a married couple. Actually, my very first time filing a joint return. It was not fun. It took almost five hours, but the results were good. Next year should be easier.
Something exciting about today was buying tickets for us all to go to Son's first concert. We are going to see Eric Clapton/Steve Winwood at the Toyota Center. Son will love it...he likes all the same music I do. I haven't gone to a concert in maybe 15 years. Woo Hoo! | posted Saturday February 28th, @08:54PM

Catfish! She visited the litter box frequently today, to no avail. She also started vomiting and yowling vigorously. She even dribbled urine on the floor. I called the vet to let them know and later got a return call from the doc with the test results, which were inconclusive. She thinks it could be a bladder obstruction or cancer. Catfish is 14, blind, and has always had a delicate constitution. I am taking her in tomorrow morning for an ultrasound which, oddly enough, costs around the same as my last ultrasound. | posted Tuesday February 24th, @07:26PM

Poor Catfish. She has been going to the litter box frequently trying to pee, but nothing happens. We took her to the vet this morning and left her to be seen between appointments. They closed at 2PM but didn't call until 3:30. She did finally pee, but they want to wait for blood/urine results to prescribe anything. She is home now. They will have the results late Monday or early Tuesday.
Hubby said his vision seemed pretty good this morning so he drove to the vet. That was the first time he drove in six months or so. I kept asking if he could see okay and he said he could...he did fine. Going back to the vet to pick up Catfish, I drove.
I made Carnitas and Spanish rice for dinner. I had half a pork shoulder in the freezer and it seemed like a good use for it. It has been cooking since 2:30 or so and I just shredded it and put it in the oven to crisp up. It smells very good. I used the broth from the simmering pot to make the rice. Yum. | posted Saturday February 21st, @07:48PM

The ophthalmologist appt. went fine. All the stitches are out and the eye looks pretty good. We don't have to go back for 4-6 weeks. Tomorrow he should get his release to return to work.
Son is getting bucket-loads of mail from colleges and universities all over the country. I guess they picked up on his test scores and added him to the mailing list. He hasn't opened any of them yet, but seems to be amused by all the different locations they are going from.
Lazy day today...I still have my headache and don't plan to do much. | posted Thursday February 19th, @12:13PM

We did not go to the appointment today. I was feeling pretty crappy both yesterday and today with sinus problems. I took some otc sinus medicine, but it only helps for a limited time. My whole face feels bruised and my ears and throat hurt.
The other forum, where I spend most of my time, has a big drama going on. This happens a lot, but I just noticed that when this happens it is always the men getting into a big uproar. I was reading today's events and was reminded of previous issues, usually involving the same people, where all hell breaks loose and the guys are trying to one up each other with the insults. It is tiresome, but hard to stop reading. Why don't they just get over themselves and call it a day?
Tonight I made a so-so dinner of chicken thighs, rice, and roasted asparagus. I didn't even cook yesterday and made the menfolk scrounge for food. That is not as bad as it sounds because there are usually some pretty good leftovers to be had. There is still chocolate cheesecake for dessert.
Phooey, I still feel lousy and I am out of sinus meds. | posted Monday February 16th, @09:34PM

Valentine's Day--
I got 2 dz. roses of different colors and a little box of chocolates. I gave him a card and some Shure Ec2 earbuds.
I made a chocolate cheesecake, the first cheesecake I ever made, and it was damn good. It didn't look pretty because it cracked a bit, but damn, it was good.
Dinner was meatloaf, garlic mashed potatoes, and green beans.
Monday we go to see the main doc at MDA. She is a hoot.

"Fuzzy feet punkin head." This is what himself just called the cat...the cat that sleeps in his lap half the day and yet he still says he doesn't like cats, right. I have tons of pictures of them snuggling together.

Today we went back to the hospital for a post-op follow up. Hubby got the huge dressing off his eye and ACK! It looked scary under there. There was a yellowish, crescent-shaped thing (they called it a bolster) under his eye with black silk sutures running from it to above his eyebrow. Whoa. Thankfully, a doc came in and removed that contraption and then some more sutures. We go back next week to have the remaining sutures removed.
We are home now and although his vision is still blurry, he can see well enough to use his computer and see the TV. Yay!
Dinner is bacon cheeseburgers and tater tots. Hey, I am tired and don't feel like cooking and we haven't eaten since breakfast. Hubby and Son are thrilled. Me, not so much. I had my happy dinner last night...pan-seared Ahi tuna steak with whole wheat couscous and steamed broccoli. | posted Wednesday February 11th, @07:29PM

Well himself has gotten over his grumpiness by listening to audio books. It is very odd to have him quietly sitting next to me with no TV blaring away. I think I like it!
I have finished the laundry, cleaned out old stuff from the fridge and started a pot of Chicken Tortilla Soup. It won't be too spicy for the benefit of the menfolk, but I can always add some diced jalapenos to mine. I fried up some tortilla strips to garnish the bowls and had to step away to avoid eating them all up. Fresh fried tortilla strips are VERY good.
No dessert has been prepared tonight...gotta draw the line somewhere. I do have a few treats planned for the coming week. Stay tuned. | posted Sunday February 8th, @06:58PM

Last night neither of us could sleep. Son was acting up too...wouldn't turn off his computer and go to bed even though it was a school night. I had to holler at him a few times to turn it off.
At 12:10 AM I asked hubby "what is the origin of the word Tallywhacker?" He wondered if it was something to do with golf. Weird thoughts like this went on in my head for hours. I had 3 episodes of leg cramps and had to walk all around the house, upstairs and down, for quite a while. I finally had to take a sleeping pill, but still didn't sleep for hours.. I think he finally went to sleep due to the pain meds.
Today he is doing alright, but getting grumpy because he can't see worth sh*t. He still has pain and the dressing over his eye is stained with blood. I don't have to do any home care at all! If it starts to look bad I have to call the eye clinic. After all the home care I've done I know when to be worried and I'm not concerned at all.
Tonight Son and I are watching "Night of the Living Dead" and eating the baked rigatoni with turkey Italian sausage in tomato cream sauce I made for dinner. Hubby is listening to an audio book. He really wanted to go on to the new book in a series he has been reading, but had to go for the audio book because he can't read.
Oh well, this too, shall pass. I am just hoping for a normal night's sleep. | posted Friday February 6th, @10:07PM

I surprised Hubby with home made sticky buns when he came down this morning. They were yummy and very easy to make. The butter dripping each time I took a bite confirmed that they are not something I will make often.
Tomorrow we are off once again to MD Anderson. We have anesthesia assessment and pre-op consultation for Thursday's procedure. He is having outpatient surgery to fix his right eyelid. It should take approx. 2 hours for the surgery and then maybe 10 days for recovery. Wish him luck!
I'm cooking fried rice for dinner tonight...using leftovers from last night's Japanese Mum's Chicken (»www.recipezaar.com/Japanese-Mums···en-68955). Damn that was good stuff. | posted Tuesday February 3rd, @06:52PM

It is late and hubby has already gone up to bed. I'm listening to Neil Young and surfing. Sometimes I just want to be by myself. Is that weird? It seems very normal to me, but I don't think it is normal to hubby.
I bought a tablet PC on eBay and it is pretty cool. I bought it to mount in the kitchen for recipes and the like, but I am having fun playing with it. When I get bored I will look into mounting hardware and put it up somewhere.
