4 edits | FAQ #2: DSL (Please don't add to it.... PM me to do so)
Here's a small FAQ on TekSavvy DSL. If you want to add to it, just PM me and I'll do so...
************************************************
Q: Can you get DSL with non-Bell lines A: Yes, in most cases, we'd just need a circuit number from your current Local provider.
************************************************
Q: Can you have more than one DSL provider over the same phone line? A: Yes, The copper portion, that is billed by Bell to the ISP, is irrelevant to the login portion, so someone can have 5 logins to various ISPs and it wouldn't be a problem!
************************************************
Q: How do I determine approximate distance? A: You can only estimate it if you already have DSL as without it it's a guess. If you have DSL already, then add the two attenuation (up/down) together, then divide by 18.
************************************************
Q: How do I tweak my modem? A: There's a thread from hell on doing exactly that of late! »SpeedTouch 516 Tweaking :) (have fun!)
************************************************
Q: What are the various profiles available for DSL? A: Here they are! (tx tilhasBB/TSI Steve!)
502/75KB/sec = 5056/800kbit sync profile 410/75KB/sec = 4032/800kbit sync profile 350/75KB/sec = 3488/800kbit sync profile 240/60KB/sec = 2496/640kbit sync profile 165/75KB/sec = 1728/800kbit sync profile 165/60KB/sec = 1728/640kbit sync profile 165/35KB/sec = 1728/384kbit sync profile 105/60KB/sec = 1184/640kbit sync profile 105/35KB/sec = 1184/384kbit sync profile 105/12KB/sec = 1184/160kbit sync profile 60/14KB/sec = 672/160kbit sync profile 48/48KB/sec = 512/512kbit sync profile 25/25KB/sec = 288/288kbit sync profile 14/14KB/sec = 160/160kbit sync profile 11/11KB/sec = 128/128kbit sync profile 14/8KB/sec = 160/96kbit sync profile 5/5KB/sec = 64/64kbit sync profile
************************************************
Q: How long will it take to receive service? A: Approximately 5 business days
************************************************
Q: How long does Bell have to respond to a ticket once a problem is identified? A: We can only escalate a problem, when unresolved, after 48hrs.
************************************************
Q: Can you move your service without telling your ISP? A: Yes, but it's not recommended. If we're not aware of your moving, we could land-up working on it and having you disconnected, or if we run an audit on the line we wouldn't know and also possibly get you disconnected.
************************************************
Q: Why "up to 5Meg" as a response for speed options? A: The problem with the new 5Meg speed is that we've eliminated the 3Meg profile and thus we find ourselves with 256k or 5Meg. As you can see there's a very big gap between the two and so to say 5Meg only means you can do more than 256k! :-( We have a tool through the Non-PPPoE are that, for select qualifying locations, we can verify the address or phone number and still get the 3Meg profile interpretation (so 256k/3meg/5Meg). Using this area, we can ballpark in-between speeds and give a range. If the 3Meg shows, then an individual could expect 3Meg to 4Meg service for instance.
************************************************
Q: Why a static IP (or subnet)? A: If you have Servers that you'd like to run, or would like to remote into your system, or like gaming, or have custom applications that require non-changing IPs, then the Static IP or subnet makes sense! Also, if you have a static, you'd have access to Binaries with us.
************************************************
Q: Is Newsgroup included in the service? A: Yes & no! You do get free access to text but not to the Binaries. You require a static IP for binary access.
************************************************
Q: How can I tell the distance from a CO? A: Here are a couple links that might help! (tx BellVictim)
»www.telcodata.us/telcodata/telco I think BellVictim had another one that was part of DSLR but I'll have to dig it up.
************************************************
Q: What should I expect as far as Noise Margins? A: SN Margin (AKA Signal to Noise Margin or Signal to Noise Ratio)... Relative strength of the DSL signal to Noise ratio.
Note: 6dB is the lowest dB manufactures specify for modem to be able to synch. In some instances interleaving can help raise the noise margin to an acceptable level. The higher the number the better for this measurement.
6dB or below is bad and will experience no synch or intermittent synch problems 7dB-10dB is fair but does not leave much room for variances in conditions 11dB-20dB is good with no synch problems 20dB-28dB is excellent 29dB or above is outstanding
************************************************
Q: What are acceptable Line Attenuation numbers? A: Measure of how much the signal has degraded between the DSLAM and the modem. Maximum signal loss recommendation is usually about 60dB. The lower the dB the better for this measurement.
20dB and below is outstanding 20dB-30dB is excellent 30dB-40dB is very good 40dB-50dB is good 50dB-60dB is poor and may experience connectivity issues 60dB or above is bad and will experience connectivity issues
