| A Faq Question
Hey Rocky, In Faq #2 you said: ---------- Q: How do I determine approximate distance? A: You can only estimate it if you already have DSL as without it it's a guess. If you have DSL already, then add the two attenuation (up/down) together, then divide by 18. ----------
I'm guessing that this returns a value in KMs? When I do this I get a different number from what my modem tells me. A little more than double. In fact, at this distance (in KMs) I wouldn't be able to get the level of service I have. What am I missing?

| Hey Rocky, I'm currently on a 5000/800 Fast profile. I get more errors than I'd like but the connection seems stable except when there are power issues (see other threads).
My attenuations are 69db up/50db down which yields a result of 6.61. My modem reports that I'm 10,000ft (3.048km) from my CO.

1 edit | Ok... so 10,000ft = 10,000 X 0.3048 /1,000 = 3.048KM...
This is the right math, however, I just pulled your stats and the attenuation is as follows from the bell side... 34dn/24up.
5056/800 84%/79% 6dB/13dB (noise) 20dBm/12dBm (power) 34dB/24dB (attenuation)
The attenuation maths out as follow based on this...
(34+24)/18 = 3.22KM which agrees with your modem's report.
The Noise on the down and the power has me a little concerned... Thinking this might be contributing to the stats differences... Maybe have a look at your wiring/termination/jack....

My modem software doesn't give me anything for output power so I can't compare that.

The last time I connected straight to the demarc it made no difference, but I was concerned mostly with the modem dropping synch. I'll try it again and watch the other stats (I can't watch the power stat).

| Ok Rocky, I'm plugged straight into the demarc. From my side it looks almost exactly the same (my upstream attenuation went down by 1). Can you pull the bell stats and see if there's any difference there? I'm curious about the power stats.
