| Question Regarding Speed
Howdy
Old Rogers subscriber finally switched over due to the standard crap ever other Rogers customer has been experiencing. Anyway I recently received my SpeedTouch 516 from TekSavvy and an email saying my service will be activated come tomorrow ( 21st ).
But being the nosy individual I decided to hook this bad boy up and behold there was internet. So I played around on it a little and looked over the modem but something seemed awfully sluggish.
Did some speed tests ( speedtest.cogeco.net and a few other websites ) and came out at around 2000-2400kbps with the upload being at around 300-350.
So what I am wondering if
a) this is the only speed i will ever get b) this is a limitation since my account hasn't been activated yet ( i cannot log in to the teksavvy web page ) c) this is a limitation by the dry loop dsl setup in which case would getting a phone line correct the problem.
Also if anyone has tips for hooking this modem up to a WRT54GS I would greatly appreciated it, being used to cable modems I figured a plug and play situation would occur but it appears that a bit more tweaking is necessary.
Any help would be appreciated |

said by rtfm :a) this is the only speed i will ever get b) this is a limitation since my account hasn't been activated yet ( i cannot log in to the teksavvy web page ) This is entirely possible seeing as if your activation date is set for the 21st there may still be some finalization that needs to happen, you can check on a few things to see what your speeds will be namely Noise Margin and attenuation, you can find these by: logging into the modem (on the left hand side menu) click On Broadband Connection click DSL Connection (on the top Right) click on Details
you should see a group of numbers that look similar to this:
Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 800 / 5.056 Data Transferred (Sent/Received) [MB/MB]: 84,91 / 177,95 Output Power (Up/Down) [dBm]: 11,5 / 17,0 Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]: 8,0 / 14,0 SN Margin (Up/Down) [dB]: 9,0 / 30,5
post those back here, we can help with the router after we address the speed issue ;) |

You might want to check the physical line between the modem and the wall jack (in your case, demarc since you don't have a dial tone?)... it's not common that the upstream frequencies are that noisy on 31.5 atten.
You should be able to get 3.5meg (another ~50KB/s or so download speed), but that's about it... unless moving your modem improves your downstream atten/snr a lot more. |

| i have tried my jack with two different phone lines and got he same results. routed my connection through my router ( wrt54g with tomato firmware ) and got the same result.
there is another jack in the vicinity but i wont be able to give it a shot till tomorrow.
honestly i dont know much about dsl so any help would be appreciated. the other thing i noticed out of curiosity is torrent vs regular http download speeds. the download speeds vary from 0 - 250k/s but the torrent ones max out at 25-30ks doesnt matter which tracker and or number of seeders.
tried multiple setups using different clients and changing my MTU on the router to 1452 ( standard was 1492 ) as recommended somewhere on the internet but no dice. |

| reply to rtfm you should be able to get 4meg, possibly 5meg but I think you'd get errors, as for the 7db SNR for the upload, I'd suggest a few things, how long is the phone cable going from the modem to the jack? ~6-10 feet (1-2m) is probably the best...try running a new phone cable directly from the demarc box to a new jack and run the modem off of that...try a different power outlet...is there a filter on the modem? hmmm there's a few different things to check out |

| the cable lengths i have tried varied from 5 feet to 20 feet as i was trying the different jacks around my house.
also i cannot get near the demarc box as i am in an apartment, testing around the different jacks i also found that only 2 out of 4 are functional. but both give me the exact same results.
i tried different power outlets but no dice
how do i check for filters on the modem, is this a hardware or software restriction ? |

| There should still be a box where it splits the phone line within your unit usually in the ceiling or in the wall somewhere (looks like a metal panel held closed by a screw, not the breaker box).
Filters are these little devices that you normally plug between phones and the wall, as you have dry-dsl and don't have any phones plugged into the wall to begin with you probably don't have any filters.
The jacks that "don't work" might have crossed pins screwing with your dsl signal. You might want to try fixing those (or removing them from the phone wiring. If you have a phone, I believe you should still hear a clear dial-tone when you plug it into a jack (you just can't dial anything). |

3008kbps sync is about 300KB/s download (2400kbps) |
