McAfee even did that with version 1.99.1 and past versions.
Note: Users of Panda and Dr.Web will also be complaing about the same problem with this V2.
FYI..
Thread in English back in 2005 and response quoted from merijn..
Im trying to fix a problem with my comp, but when i dowload Hijackthis after 3 minutes mcafee cleans it and says its a virus. Why is it doing that isnt Hijackthis a virus free program?
McAfee 8.0i also removed Spybot S&D. What Ver. of McAfee are you useing ?

Reply: Have you updated your McAfee yet? Also make sure you're using the latest version of HijackThis (1.99.1). The following is a quote from the author...
[Update] It seems McAfee is detecting the new HijackThis version as W32/Generic.worm!p2p. It is not the first time this happened and probably not the last time either. There is no virus in HijackThis. McAfee incorrectly detects the PE compression method I use on all of my programs as a generic Kazaa worm. I will try to contact McAfee about this and see if the incorrect detection can be removed in their next update. [Update 2] Success! McAfee has put out new definitions that no longer detect HijackThis 1.99.1 as a virus. ^_^

| reply to dolphins My take on the whole situation at McAfee after they published this info some time ago..is that just thinking about using McAfee these days gives me an error message.
»vil.nai.com/vil/content/v_100342.htm
"Before 4267 DATs users who upgraded to 4240+ engines could benefit from "New MSVB P2P worm" detection in program heuristic mode. This detection was converted into "W32/Generic.worm!p2p" as AVERT is now confident that this generic detection does not cause any problems.
Please have in mind that "W32/Generic.worm!p2p" detection does not mean that P2P is the only vector utilized by the malware. It well can also have mass-mailing capabilities, IRC spreading, be a network hopper, etc."

1 edit | Even when McAfee comes free of charge it's still not worth the money.
What am I, as an IT professional, meant to think when McAfee detects a tool which I trust and use all the time in my work as suspect? Am I meant to be impressed with the reliability or power of McAfee? Nope. Am I meant to refute the excellence of HijackThis in deference to the unquestionable accuracy of McAfee? No again. Am I simply going to treat McAfee with suspicion and refuse to recommend or endorse it? Ah, there we go. Especially when they KEEP detecting HJT as a threat over several years. Do they REALLY think that if they keep up the big boy tactics that we'll eventually give in and come over to their way of thinking? Who the hell do they think they are? Microsoft???
