1 edit | eastlink throttling all protocols on there 10mbit package??
well i do know eastlink throttle nntp(newserver) to 4mbits, they say they throttle it at 5mbits but its really 4mbits, now there ftp protocol seems to be throttled as well as i use to be able to get almost my full 10mbits with like 3 simutaneous downloads off ftp servers but lately they seem to be throttled to like 5 mbits as nomatter how many download slots i open the total speeds never go over 620kb/s. Something is definately wrong with this as since we pay for 10mbit line we should not be throttled. They admit to throttling there newserver which is bs. whats the point of offering a 10mbit line if there going to damn well throttle all protocols to 4-5mbits???its all bs.when i first got 10mbit service it was smokin fast but the last 3 or 4 months they seem to be throttling all protocols now. anyone from eastlink have any comments to this?? |

| reply to jericho Yeah, Newshosting is throttled for me too. Not at first though, I moved here last summer and all was fine for about 3 months until I noticed the speed drop, it never goes above 480 down now for newsgroups. I cant comment on FTP. Funny how they denied any sort of throttling when I called them. Good to know I wasnt crazy, thanks. |

| reply to jericho brownstein , use one of newshostings other ports other then 119, eastlink throttles port 119 as thats the standard nntp port,from newshosting site:
The following ports allow you to force your packets out a particular connection of ours:
* port(s): 7000 routing: ServerCentral (path1) * port(s): 8000 routing: Cogent (path1) * port(s): 9000 routing: BtN (path1)
try one of those ports and your speed should be better.
as for that ftp you tested jobr thats within eastlinks network, i believe there throttling ftp protocol outside of there network not within. |

| Jericho, I have tried all of the ports that you mention, they actually worked for a little while then got throttled as well. I talked to 3 different people at eastlink when this first started going on and I specifically asked if they were throttling any ports or anything and they all said "hmm, let me just check your line and see if anything is throttled... nope, everything is fine". Bastards.
Actually they arent too bad, at least they dont hassle me about downloading. when I signed up they said there is no download limit and so far they are holding true to their word.
The speed decrease doesnt even bother me that much aside from the fact that I am paying for it in their bundle and there is no way to get the price lowered if I just change my plan to the 5 down one. |

| reply to jericho so they started throttling all the other ports premium newservers use eh?? thats just not right at all.unbelievable actually, paying all this extra money for a 10mbit connection and they and other isp's as well do nothing but throttle and cap .What else is funny is they have comercials on tv saying there one of the fastest in north america..lmao.10mbits now is slow compared to what all the other isps in canada and the usa are offering now.different isp's in canada and usa are now offering 16mbit-50mbit tiers so im not sure how they can keep running that commercial.It really sickens me cause I know my 10mbit was pretty fast when I first got it, coould max it out most all the time whenever i needed to but now no matter how many download slots i open for ftp you can see that the connection is being throttled cause it will jump to like 10,11mbit at first then its like someone put on the brakes and it just drops to around 5mbits nomatter how many slots i open.its too bad none of the techs from eastlink come on here to give there opinions cause i sure would love to hear them.i know how isp's work and they will deny everything of course cause thats what they do lol. |
