Office Update/Online now requires OGA

I just noticed some Windows updates today and I ran Office Update as well. It looks like Office Genuine Advantage (OGA) ActiveX Control is now required. I saw this in both XP Pro. SP2 and 2000 SP4.

Only updates to Windows (Hasta La) Vista, I believe.

Probably why we aren't getting any critical security updates this month. They are working on the "Most Critical Update" next for next month. WGA for your downloading pleasure.

Yep. I noticed this Office Update's WGA requirement is a couple months late. Remember this article? »www.pcworld.com/article/id,12767···cle.html

Wow. "Required", eh? Sounds incredibly important. Possibly even critical.
Maybe I should go grab one before they run out.

Yep, no ActiveX control = no Office Update.

Yep, no ActiveX controls = no Office Update.
Then not having my ActiveX control is unacceptable.

. . . Oh, wait . . I don't use Office. . . whoops! Nevermind!

I recommend everyone upgrade to the latest version of WGA ASAP, however.
No doubt there are many added features, bug fixes, stability tweaks, and tracking improvements since the last one.

I wonder if one can download MS Office Updates manually like that Web site with Windows Update files. Do they exist?

Oops, I meant to say OGA (Office), not WGA.

Yes just go to »www.microsoft.com/downloads

Search for what you need.

Re: Office Update/Online now requires OGA

Two words in answer: Open Office.

Open source, free, handles all Microsoft Office
documents, and no WGA.

The more Redmond employs such tactics, the more they
are going to lose users to open source alternatives.

I installed open office's latest version on one of my other Pc's and it would not operate properly. Templets were not available and it complains about not finding certain library's.

First time I have had any problem with open office.

Not sure what haappened. Bad download mebe.

*whispers* "if they build it, the hacks will come"

There are a virtual booty full of hacks and cracks for WGA, what's a minor tweak to point it at a different directory or file name ?

Remember, 2 months ago Vista was touted as being non-pirateable (is that a word?).
Now you can pirate Vista so well that even M$ can't tell if it's legit or not.

I give it a week....

Is your copy legal? Microsoft does not develope this software for free.

No, they don't, as is evidenced by the billions of dollars in revenue that the company generates every quarter. A dead giveaway.

Where did antdude See Profile even hint that his copy of Office might not be genuine, btw?

I have had that, I would redownload it. Main thing is if it don't pass the hashcheck it shouldn't allow the decompress/install.
