Here are some pics, I'll post some more, once it is hooked up to the HDTV.

Don't you wish all products were packaged like Apple ones! Looks pretty cool. Anxious to hear your review/impressions.

I'm curious how it handles overscan. My Mini has issues unless I uncheck the "overscan" box under displays. I have mine going DVI -> HDMI on my DLP.

Just a quick review, as I need to get back to work

Even though iTunes will take awhile to sync everything, the AppleTV still allows you to watch/listen to everything, it just streams it, flawlessly.

Watching Movie trailers via the web, is perfect. Things are all wireless right now, so while it is coping data from an iMac, it still loaded a trailer from the web within 2 seconds.

TV shows from iTunes, are viewable on the 61" HDTV, but as we all know, not HD quality, but still very viewable.

One question before, was the screen size, can it be changed to 4:3, verses 16:9, I didn't see any settings for that, just resolution settings (480p, 720p, 1080i)

I'll report more in the next day or so.

EDIT: Also, just because you can play video's/movies in iTunes, does NOT mean AppleTV will play it. Many ripped DVD's are not showing up in Apple TV, but play fine within iTunes. Some are working ok, so there must be some setting, when I ripped them, which are different.

Re: AppleTV has arrived

Yeah, I read there is no Divx support in AppleTV which is a deal killer for me. I'm going to end up just picking up a refurb Core Solo Mini from the Apple Store. it's more expensive but way more flexible in playing video.

I'd like to see it hooked up to an Airport Extreme Base Station with some H264 video on USB drives. Thats my scenario at least, I'm probably going to get an Apple TV within a few months...

Very cool.

I'm still trying to understand what it needs the hard drive for, and how it determines what subset of files in the designated master computer's iTunes Library it is going to copy over.

If it is copying from an 802.11n machine, I'd be curious to see what iStat Pro or some other I/O monitor showed as the throughput rate.

And of course, we should all anticipate Kodawarisan getting theirs and disassembling it.

It's simply the living room version of a video ipod. So, just as with your ipod, you have to let iTunes on the master computer which files you want to have synced with it.

I suppose this will most likely happen best using a smart playlist that includes video files etc.

In terms of the device not playing some rips, there are several "profiles" of the AVC (h.264) codec, each of which calls for a resolution, fps, bitrate range, and a myriad of features of the encoder itself, that can be used with iTv. Some profiles will work, whereas others won't. Some will be simply too much for it to handle I suppose.

Re: AppleTV has arrived

I tend to rip with the H.264 main profile at the source (DVD) resolution, know if that is supported?

How hard is it to set it up with a password protected wireless network? I've got a pretty long and involved password and plan on keeping it..

Re: AppleTV has arrived

Once it finds a wireless network, which is protected, it gives you a screen to scroll and select each character of the password. it is much slower then typing on a QWERTY keyboard.

The 1 thing I do not know, is if it remembers that password after a power cycle.

My unit is getting swapped out tonight at a local Apple store, because after a change on my airport express, the apple TV will not connect wirelessly any more

I spent 45 minutes with applecare, and the final solution was to swap it out. so we will see what happened tonight.

That's not good. Do you remember what change you made?

One thing is for sure: after seeing all the 'lick-pics' and '[month] desktops' you folks obviously have a lot more money than I do ...

Re: AppleTV has arrived

I changed the WPA2 password, and since that, including removing all security, the AppleTV won't connect via wireless, it works just fine with Ethernet, however I don't have an Ethernet cable run to the TV area yet.

I'm in trouble.

Saw the display on the way home at the Southlake Store. After the usual ripping by the Apple employees about a certain company passing on the iPhone I decided to ask if they had any in stock. 2 left.

Or should I say 1 left.

If they understood the turd of a deal Apple 'offered' that other company, they wouldn't rip you on it. It wouldn't be good business for that other company.

Did you have any trouble setting to 1080i?

I tried changing the rez up to 1080i from 720p and everything went green. I think it does not like that resolution.

Just a follow up on the wireless issue. It appears the AppleTV is more picky on a wireless signal then any of our G4 iBooks, or G5 iMacs.

So even though all computers would connect without an issue, the appleTV did not, so it is more the signal then anything else as far as the problem.

My goal is to run an Ethernet cable back to the TV area, but that is a few weeks off.

Syncing over 802.11g is a long process. It will sync in the following order, Movies, TV Shows, Music, Podcast, photo's. So basically, largest to smallest as typical file size goes.

Once I get some more time, I'll do some more work with this, and report back.

As far an a USB hard drive, I have not attempted that yet, but it is on my list of things to try.

Might be a driver issue rather than a signal issue.

I don't get it. Whats the big deal about this. Seems like an ipod you see on your tv.

Think i'd rather buy sling catcher then this over priced apple product.

Interesting. I would have thought it would use the space for photos first as that is the one thing it can't stream.

So the only reason for the hard drive is so you can turn off your computers?

I believe so, it also helps if the wireless network doesn't work, lol

The streaming works almost instantly, so there is very little difference on watching something from the hard drive, verses streaming.

The actual link would be NSFW, but I heard that if one looks for "Olivia Munn Licks an Apple TV" that it might turn up, especially on sites like, oh, let's just choose one at random like egotastic, you know, with the usual suffix added onto it.

Does your AppleTV show up all the time in iTunes or does it 'disappear' sometimes?

Mine should be syncing right now but I don't see it in iTunes anymore which makes me suspect things are awry.

Mine disappears randomly, however when it disappears the appleTV has lost the network connection, via Wireless. I may run a cable this weekend, however that is a big project

So here's the funny thing. All day I couldn't get much stuff copied over to my Apple TV. Now that it's nighttime it's been syncing continuously for the past half hour or so. Wonder if it's got something to do with the number of active wireless channels at a given time? Who knows, but it's working for now!

Re: AppleTV has arrived

The wireless ability on these things are horrible, I hope that can be fixed with some software update. There are tons of reports on Apple's support site with issues just like mine, wireless will go in and out, if it connects at all. One post had a user create some type of foil antennae extender.

But as Johnny pointed out, it does stop syncing when you use the AppleTV
