Edit: 256mb it seems, with 64mb video ram.
But anyway, I'm more interested in the hacks that make it work the other way around, running the AppleTV app on a regular Mac. I have a Mac mini hooked up to the HDTV, and it would be a nice front row replacement. -- GO LEAFS GO! |

Open the floodgates for the switchers. $299 plus cheap USB KB and mouse, and $129 or less for the OS. Isn't there a cheap HDMI->DVI or other adapter? |

| reply to Johnny The wireless ability on these things are horrible, I hope that can be fixed with some software update. There are tons of reports on Apple's support site with issues just like mine, wireless will go in and out, if it connects at all. One post had a user create some type of foil antennae extender.
But as Johnny pointed out, it does stop syncing when you use the AppleTV -- Lightning Bolt Technologies |

Now that it's nighttime it's been syncing continuously for the past half hour or so. Wonder if it's got something to do with the number of active wireless channels at a given time? Who knows, but it's working for now! Were you streaming to it? It pauses the syncing if it is streaming. |

I wonder if I should tell them that the "AppleTOCWatchdog.kext" file is not in the standard Tiger install and is probably what is killing any attempt to launch the keyboard USB driver? |

| reply to sporkme And it's got USB, so I could imagine someone throwing EyeTV on there...
Yep, the USB driver is in there, and they are able to sense command-S and Verbose mode, but that is probably the firmware doing that, not the USB kext in the I/O kit. Last I checked they could get to the Darwin command line but a keyboard wasn't recognized at that point.
SSH and VNC work, so they can do it that way, and eventually get a USB driver going.
They faked up the Xvid by using Perian and fooling QuickTime into loading a QT reference movie that actually pointed to an Xvid file rather than a .mov file.
Or just load a whole Tiger image on there and be done with it.
Note that Apple calls the OS "Mac TV OS".
Within a week I think they will have a one-click solution for Perian - the lead Perian developer was posting there and he is going to help out.
Apple shouldn't care what people do with this thing - if it is easy and free to add on Perian and support all formats, then Apple doesn't have to support it and they don't have to fiddle with licensing. With that flexibility, the Apple TV will easily be the best unit out there.

| reply to Johnny Awesome.
For a "closed system" from a "closed company" they left a lot of stuff just wide open and swingin' in the breeze.
So it's a mini with a tiny processor and frontrow+steroids for $300.

I could probably get this thing running a lot more than they're doing in a day or so.. Who wants to donate one ..
The guys on that forum seem to not have very much OS X experience (especially with kexts or imaging the system)
