[Help] focusing/settings

Click for full size
Canon EOS DIGITAL REBEL XT
54mm 1/800th F4.5 ISO100

Stupid question for some, but how would I get all this in focus. I took several photos and never quite managed it.
It's not just the flower either. I take a group of people and I never quite managed to get all in focus.

You need to shoot with a smaller aperture (larger number) to increase your DOF.

Stop down the aperture.

Like I've not been told that a 100 times before.Thanks...again

Believe it or not, that's actually what I was practicing today. Put the camera on Aperture mode most of the time then took the same scene with different settings.

Instead of using f/4.5, try f/8 or f/11.

Is this an issue of not knowing how to change the setting on the camera? Or did you try that and it still didn't work?

Also, with the smaller aperture, you should focus on the center of the flower.

No, I know how to change everything, it's just remembering when to change it

Changing the aperture while taking the flower wasn't an option, since when I put the camera in macro mode, I can't manually change anything.

So I guess the question still stands - or I should just take a step back from the flower, and make sure the whole thing is in focus.

Stay where you are at, close the aperture down. If you are handholding, watch your shutter speed. I shoot a lot of flower macros at f/22 which pretty much requires a tripod unless you have a ton of light. In your shot above looks like you have plenty of shutter speed to deal with (1/800th) you could get that down several stops before worrying about it hand held.

I need to put the camera to aperture priority to do all that, I'm almost positive I can't change anything in macro mode on the canon xt. Thanks for the advice.

Then don't use macro mode, use manual mode, or Av (aperture priority).

That is probably correct - for the most part I would stay away from the pre-programmed scene modes. Use them to see what choices the camera would make, and then move back to modes with more control for tweaking.

Av is probably your friend here - use it when you want control over the DOF. Camera will chose a good shutter speed.

Some assembly required, your mileage may vary, no pixels were harmed in the writing of this post. Brain cells, though, are a different matter. You want fries with that?

I have an XT. It has macro mode? I never used it.

Like was said... Use Aperature priority mode - You set the aperature and the camera sets the correct shutter speed.

Now... Tell us what lens you're using.

This question does not apply for the automatic modes. The camera sets everything. If you want better photos, use the manual settings.
