[XP Pro] Windows Update last night, now won't boot.

Ok, it was going so well...

Last night I did the "install updates" and went to bed. This morning, I have a black screen, power off, power up, get the windows failed to load, choose screen, I select normal, gets to the graphic "loading windows" screen and it hangs.

Had to leave for work, so can't do much debug until latter.

I looked in the FAQ but did not see any "NO LOAD, what to do next" threads.

Questions, what was the update that got pushed out yesterday? And if it boots to safe mode what do I need to do to fix it.

Computer, is an Acer E360 desktop, nvidia chipset, sound, integrated video, enet, ect.

Thanks, Scott

If you can boot to safe mode, try to uninstall the KB925902 update that MS just released. This update has caused problems for many people, it breaks some applications and drivers and can cause problems booting.

I'm holding off updating to this (it is listed as a Critical Update on the Windows Update site) because of the reported problems.

See this forum link for some examples and info:

Can I add that after I applied the update and restarted the the other computer next to me, the monitor drivers started acting up.

Since the monitor is a CRT, you have to make adjustments so the image shows correctly. Well after the restart, Windows wasn't showing my monitor correctly (Multiple Monitors was shown under display properties instead of my monitor model) and the image itself was way off alignment. I think the reasoning for that is because since it did not detect my monitor correctly, it ran at a lower refresh rate than 85Hz which is set up fine image wise.

Anyways, another reboot solved that problem, but still made me wonder if the update did indeed create that problem.

Re: [XP Pro] Windows Update last night, now won't boot.

I will never understand how good/necessary a such "critical" update is if you are already warned that it screws up your system.
When someone has the "warning" little icon in the taskbar that WU d/loaded some critical update, it should click "CUSTOM" rather than doing it "EXPRESS"ly.
If you check the "custom" box, then you can find out what are the characteristics of that latest "critical" update, and any issues it may bring along, because it provides you with MS link discussing that particular update.

This latest KB925902 "critical" update it may cause the Realtek HD Audio Control panel to not start....well, actually it can be read @
http : // support. microsoft. com/?kbid=925902 .
The "antidote" is yet another "update", KB935448.

How sweet it is to be...

Thanks for the posts and info... I was prepared to do the uninstall when I got home. It was still stuck on the graphics screen prior to the login names. I powered off and powered back on and it booted normally, no dos screen safe mode questions, just booted normally.

I checked the event logs and found nothing of the issues I was having.

Seems to be working just fine. ? !
