Verizon Wireless - that's me . . .

Jeffrey Nelson here - in corporate comm. at Verizon Wireless.

Been reading and want to acknowledge that we added the 5GB language to the Ts and Cs of our "Unlimited FOR" BroadbandAccess plan several months ago. And, as some have noted here, while the Ts and Cs have remained the same, for those who don't go through the fine-print and get their impression of what the "plan" is just from advertising, we've been migrating the visuals away from a big "unlimited for" . . . to providing more detailed information about our monthly broadband plan.

We're pretty famous (notorious?) about protecting our networks at Verizon Wireless - which means we take short-term hits occasionally, to support the long-term vision - and long-term quality of service - that our customers expect and pay for. Not apologizing for that - but understand that others may have a different point of view. We've paid a lot for the right to use RF spectrum, have spent billions to build out the best voice and data network in the country, and offer services at prices that provide value to millions of customers. And we're going to protect those relationships and expectations.

Appreciate the opportunity to respond.
Jeffrey Nelson

There's a new sheriff in town, Jeff. His name is Dingell.

The party's just about over. Better drink up. Last call.

Mr. Nelson...perhaps you could respond why VZW had been heavily advertising the Moto Q on Slingbox's site when the Slingviewer for the Q was coming out? How are we supposed to use the Slingviewer on the Q if there is a cap on downloads? Seems at a minimum, inconsistent and more like misleading advertising.

Recent press releases still say you have 'unlimited' with no mention of 5GB/month limit.
»sev.prnewswire.com/computer-elec···7-1.html

VZW has the limit because they do not have enough capacity. VZW has 26K+ towers and 60m users. Sprint has 30K+ CDMA towers and only 30-35m CDMA users and is adding 4K more towers this year on Nextel sites. Verizon has the worst user/tower ratio of all carriers. Sprint has far more capacity, and is showing higher average performance even though they don't have the limit. When Sprint rolls out WiMAX, it will reduce EVDO usage in those markets leaving more capacity. This is why Sprint has no need to have the limit.

What's Verizon's excuse again? If Verizon is 'protecting' their network and Sprint is not, why does Sprint consistently show better performance?

It's because Sprint has more data capacity than Verizon and Verizon would rather restrict users than properly build up the network.

Maybe work on the Internet access a little more and Vcast a lot less?

How about EVDO in the 28743 zip code area?

How about less than 900 msec latency when using 1xRTT when roaming on the US Cellular site in the 28743 zip code area?

How about responding to these complaints that we have been airing for YEARS.

We DO appreciate Verizon visiting us here, but there certainly is a lot of pent up frustration!

Truth in advertising would be nice. I bought an unlimited EVDO plan, but actually got caps.

It's also irritating going to a Verizon store in Asheville, NC and get advertised at while standing in line. A monitor and speakers were playing back (blaring) a loop going on about broadband access and Vcast. I've never seen EVDO in Asheville.

Irritated me so much that we left our purchases and went to a US Cellular store. Much nicer people there...

Obviously I came prepared to address information on our BroadbandAccess service and not every item, from coverage to latency to roaming. I'm reading, though, and will share with internal groups as appropriate. So . . . thank you for the info/opinions.

how about you just get rid of the fine print, since you've already admitted that people don't read it and proclaim what you've just told us onto the contract or advertisements that you produce and deploy... that way the level of confusion that your contracts, disclaimers, and general advertising using the all-purpose asterisk to denote something doesn't get ignored or lost on people... or better yet, just don't advertise something you can't provide, refuse to provide, or will penalize people for actually using...

don't block useful features on the phone, i.e. locking down Bluetooth, etc.

Also you guys need to get a new suite of phones, Razr's are played out and Treo's aren't far behind. Any chance you'll be getting the Blackjack or something similar? Q doesn't cut it, IMHO.

What do you want them to do? I'm sure they didn't go out of their way to make it look "obnoxious" and I don't think that 90% of those pics show anything extraordinary... It looks like you guys are looking to pick on Verizon for no good reason. VZ is wiring my town up as we speak and they haven't done anything like that. That guy is extremely annoying and what he doesn't realize is that if he doesn't like FIOS, he can vote with his wallet. The truth is FIOS is the #1 ISP in America and they are forcing competition with the cable companies now.

Does this cap apply to the EVDO Cardbus adapters for laptops as well? It's strange to me that VZW would now institute such caps since the parent company now owns one of the largest IP backbones in the world.

I see that you emphasized your service as "Unlimited FOR [email and browsing]" Forgive me, but appending FOR to Unlimited doesn't help your argument, particularly when the T's and C's you mention explicitly state 5 GB of usage will get you terminated WITHOUT QUALIFICATION.

In other words, If I were to use your service for only e-mail and browsing, but had large attachments and violated the 5GB limit, I would still get cut off, even though I wasn't using it for a prohibited use. The term in your T's & C's that gets you into trouble is "presumed", as you "presume" a 5 GB user is using it for a prohibited use. If you were actually reviewing the types of usages for a user, you could get away with the Unlimited FOR language, but you aren't, so you can't.

By the way, using the term Unlimited in this way in any form on a website (not just banners) is a violation of the Terms and Conditions of BBBOnline Terms and Conditions. VZW.com proudly displays the BBBOnline logo on almost all of their pages. BBBOnline specifically prohibits the use of terms like "Unlimited" in a misleading way, regardless of context. Perhaps you should read THEIR fine print .
