Kevin McAleavey -
COMODO BOClean 4.23 (note the extremely minor version number change) will be the SAME as BOClean 4.22 for now ... the only major changes are some nice graphics on it that say COMODO of course, and the solution for VISTA compatibility that worked just fine in 4.22 until Vista was actually released. Microsoft made some changes in how kernel drivers are handled and even though ours wasn't a HARDWARE driver in the traditional sense, they required not only "signed code" but also a special "CROSS-certificate" from Microsoft in addition to the "signed code." While I was still with Privacy Software Corp, we requested this from them back in December of last year and never got it. Now that we're in COMODO's hands, the logjam was broken and the certificates JUST arrived this past week. THAT was the major part of the delay. Once the code has been signed, then we have to go back and retest all of the 4.23 release to ensure that everything works properly as there have been quite a few reports of strange things happening with signed kernel code. Since it's always been our tradition to avoid tossing coded corpses out of speeding cars in the dead of night, need a few more days to beat up things in our own labs to ensure it will work as reliably as its predecessor yet be happy under Vista.
And no, not handing out "release candidates" at this point either ... but the 4.23 release, aside from the above, will be the SAME as 4.22 was. Once that's out the door, next step is to take the existing code which is written in Borland C and then port it to Microsoft C (Microsoft's C isn't completely ANSI compatible whereas Borland was) so that my teammates at COMODO can get under the hood along with me and start making some SERIOUS improvements to it which will hopefully lead us to either a 4.30 or better yet that fabled 5.0 release as soon as is practical. Over the past two years, I've started to do a number of amazing things that I never had the time to FINISH. I think those unfinished things excited Melih even more than BOClean or any of our other existing stuff. Hopefully now that I have analysts and no longer have to do the malware, this will all come together sooner rather than later. There's a lot of work ahead to be done and it's great to finally have the opportunity to DO some of it again! |

1 edit | LOL.
Don't get Dadkins started eh.
As for BOClean, what the "fabled version 5" is about, I no doubt it will be a lot better a product, and look forward to seeing research, rather than detection and repair, which already has been noted in that last thread. There Dadkins, we do listen.
I wonder what it will be capable of, coupled with Comodo firewall. Will look forward to that for a test.

| reply to MADx Okay. I downloaded and installed it. It appears to offer real-time protection against Trojan infections, but without file scanning ability. Is that right, or am I missing something?
Do I need this when I already have Active Virus Shield (Kaspersky free) running in real time? |

Way back when AVs only looked for viruses, yeah! A resident AT would have been a good idea.
Now that nearly any "scanner"(Real Time and On Demand both) scans for all kinds of malware, trojans included, ya really don't need a secondary AT resident - from ANYONE!
Since BOC is free now, go ahead and get it and YOU decide whether or not it is needed.

But I think you need it.. and more.. (a lot of common sense too)
For example this guy had KAV and BOClean (now I don't know what his KAV settings were but..)

1 edit | reply to MADx IMHO boclean offers a great second defense. If all else fails its good to have an extra layer of detection. IMHO if your using kaspersky its probably overkill due to there great trojan detection, however me a nod32 fan they have been known to sometimes miss a few trojans which is where boclean comes in. Trojan is ran nod32 misses it, loads into memory boclean picks up the new variant and stops it before it can do harm. Its not like the program is a killer on resources and now that its free there is no reason not to use it. |

How many HJT logs have I posted? 0. How many "I'm hosed" threads have I started? 0.
I go anywhere and click anything. I DO NOT use BOC! No infections... *ANYONE* care to try and explain how?
I didn't have BOC... At various times, I have had Trend Micro, KAV, and avast.
NO BOClean - and nothing ever happened.
Recently, someone(a friend) sent me a copy of the original 4.22 BOC. I installed it. It sat there. It consumed 10MB(not worried about RAM, but WTF?)
It detected Gibson's Leak Test... OOOoooo!!!! Considering that Gibson's Leak Test is harmless, Wow! I'm impressed!
I took it for a spin in the Adult Arena of the web... seen my AV have a hissyfit a bunch of times! Trojans, codecs, javascripts, IST... a few items.
BOC didn't do shit!
Scanned that test laptop with a SHITLOAD of scanners afterwards. AVs, ATs, ASs, Rootkit scanners(All of them)...
Guess what!!!
Not a damn thing was found besides - cookies! BFD! LMAO!
Now, I ask this ONE MORE TIME:
What do I need BOClean for?
Even though it is Free - NOW, *I* still don't see a pressing need for it.
As always, YMMV.
I suggest to everyone, get it(IT'S FREE)! Use it on your machines!
If it is useful, Great! If it is not, also Great!
All the turfing that has been done about the Almighty BOC, sure was a BIG letdown when I actually got a copy! -- Think outside the Fox... Opera |
