Re: Comcast connection to Pair Networks

So what are people thinking....is it a Comcast routing issue?

DNS seems to work fine. I can't get to any site via the IP, so it's not a DNS issue.

I'm assuming it's a Comcast routing issue and not a Pair routing issue?

Can you post a traceroute to see what you get?

What's weird is I can SSH to a site I have hosted at Pair, but I can't get anything via HTTP.

Even weirder is, if I load the site...but load a page that throws a 404 error....I get the standard Apache error message.

I can SSH to my server, but it hangs when it tries to send me any output (from top or ps or even a long ls command)... I can reproduce the 404 message just like the poster above, but I think we're dealing with a problem that has to do with the amount of data flowing through the pipe... Is that even possible? Packet fragmentation? I'm grasping at straws...

I had to VPN to a client system on a different ISP to get my email from Pair.

It could be asynchronous routes and the return isn't working. Clearly it's not just a Pair issue.

It's got to be a return route problem. I can connect to my servers at Pair via FTP....but can't get the directory listing, even in Terminal.

However, I can SSH into them and get everything.

I'm guessing this is a Comcast issue. Think it's worthwhile to call them....or will I just be wasting my time trying to get through Level 1 and 2 techs.

Huh? Comcast has level 2 techs?

This is posted at Pair:
[Apr 19, 2007, 6:47 PM] Network Problems

We are currently receiving widespread reports of difficulty reaching sites hosted on our network from the Comcast network. We are attempting to address the issue with Comcast, as there appears to be no problem on this end. This is at least the third recurrence of this type of problem this year; we remain hopeful that Comcast can resolve the difficulty.
I'm betting Pair has a better chance of getting through the "Please restart your cable modem...please connect your computer directly to the cable modem...please reload Windows on your PC..." drone-speak than I do.

Re: Comcast connection to Pair Networks

I have called Comcast twice about this and sent them an e-mail to their support department. They said that they have people looking into the problem but can't give me any idea when it will be fixed. Pair Networks told me that this has happened a couple of other times with Comcast in the past.

I tried pair.com with the same results. But here's the weird thing - my brother (who is on the same home network as me) can access livejournal (I haven't asked him about the others).

I can ping and tracert to my heart's content but nothing via http.

Re: Comcast connection to Pair Networks

I have the same issue FTPing to my site on ipowerweb. Different provider than yours.. I can FTP in.. get authenticated.. and fail the directory listing.

I think you should call.. the more of us that call, the more it is raised to their attention. It is clear there is an issue, but it varies between us as to which sites we can reach and which we cannot.

So yeah, everyone that reads this, that is having a similar issue, needs to call and log a ticket. The wider the variety of tickets received the more obvious there is an issue that needs fixing.

@comcast.net

I can't connect to any pair.com domain or Yahoo mail. I think there is something they're doing. I have a number of About to call comcast.

Pinging the hosts are fine, and ssh/telnet work great to the other ports. If I telnet to port 80 and try to manually issue an HTTP request, it hangs. Something on Comcast's network is doing something.

THanks for posting this.

BTW, I think it's localized to the northeast. I'm in teh Hartford area, and the traces above are from the Boston area.... This sucks.

I just chatted with Comcast.. here it is for the amusement value at least:

Joanna :Thank you for taking the time to contact Comcast today. My name is Joanna, how may I be of assistance to you?

Gary:Hi Joanna! Currently Northeast Comcast customers cannot reach a number of sites (via http request) hosted at pair.com and many others due to an apparent return routing issue - what's the ETA for a fix?

Joanna:We appreciate that you have taken the time to alert us of the current issue. Our engineers are aware of the issue, and are already investigating. We do not have an estimated time of resolution, but we are confident that services will be restored shortly. We apologize for any inconvenience that this has caused. Please be assured that we will use this event as an opportunity to learn, and the information we gather will be applied towards making our network even more reliable.

Gary: ::sigh:: thanks

Joanna:You're welcome, will there be any other questions or concerns I can help you with this evening?

Gary:no, that's it. If it helps, PLEASE let anyone you can know that this is a MAJOR issue. Thanks again.

Joanna:Ok, then you have a good day, and thank you for contacting Comcast.

Yep, same issue here. I can make a TCP connection, but nothing comes down the wire after that. It appears to be restricted to port 80 traffic, as my mail is coming through just fine, but I can't get to mail.yahoo.com. Comcast needs to hire some real network engineers...

... or Global Crossing rather?

Gary at QGMCOM

@comcast.net

Does look like Global Crossing is having a problem with severe latency to Verizon Boston.

If you go to »www.internetpulse.net and do a focus from Global Crossing to Verizon Boston you can see the packet loss report (212ms+). Of course Global Crossing is reporting an "average" packet loss of only 44.42ms

While 212ms is huge I'm not certain that this is enough to cause the problems we're seeing. Anyone on a direct Verizon circuit in the NE care to chime in? If they're not seeing this issue maybe it can be put back into Comcasts lap.

Nope, as it doesn't affect anything other than port 80 traffic. I can make TCP connections just fine to all of these sites, but as soon as I send an HTTP request, nothing comes back...

Connecting to the mail server on flickr.com works fine, but connecting to the web server does not. Something fishy is going on with filtering, which I don't like one bit.

Yeah, I (re-)set up a proxy server for myself. One of the advantages of owning a hosting company Luckily, it's limited to only port 80 traffic, so it's not getting in the way of anything else.
