1 edit | Comcast cut us off Ok about 2 months ago we got an "abuse" department call said we were "way over our limits" they claimed we downloaded 160GB of data in a month, which makese sense since I work as a programming consultant, do microsoft beta testing, and do work at home over VPN in addition to VoIP usage! 160GB can add up very fast in that situation... well I put on a new firmware on my router (its called tomato for linksys routers) to monitor our bandwidth, last month I kept it at 20GB this month at 30GB and this month comcast set our modem config file yesterday to cmterminate or something that... we couldnt figure out why, called up customer support and they said we were flagged for excessive bandwidth usage... 30GB is excessive? but back in feb when we got the call all they would tell us is "reduce it drastically or have it turned off for a year" i sware that is ALL they would say they would tell us nothing more. we even asked what drasticly entailed exactly, no answer, just "reduce it drastically"... well I'd say 87% reduction is drastic wouldnt you?... so we called the abuse line left the name, number and reason, it said it would call back in 24 hours... nothing! what in the world are we supose to do now? all I can get now is wireless broadband over my sprint connection and it isnt cheap.... I want to ask someone why 30GB was still excessive considering we did a 87%! reduction! I mean serisouly! and they tried to make me feel like a criminal last time i talked to them, constantly saying "you can do that with illegal p2p downloading" they refused to believe I beta test for microsoft and download a lot of stuff from them monthly, ontop of that I am a programmer and use source control at home to work which can transfer a lot of information in a day of use with a lot of the larger files I work with...
anyone have any idea on how to actually get to talk to them and get this reactivated? we dont have much of a choice here... its Cable, Dial-up or cellular internet... (satelite is not an option because of the cost!, and DSL doesnt come to the houe)
thanks..

Bring a chart or log from your router and some sort of proof that you are doing beta testing. They shouldn't have a problem believing you. |

The addition of Fios in an area is actually good for the average Cable customer. It removes all the "VPN, VOIP, Microsoft BETA Testers, Linux downloaders, I work as a inportant web developer" non residential users from tyhe network.

Re: Comcast cut us off Just a thought on how much people, me included, use the bandwidth and don't realize it. I downloaded a program that meters the bandwidth.
Since April 20 AT 11:46 AM I have used 6.09GB of bandwidth.
I count up and down, I'm sure they also count up/down since they pay no matter which you use.
I'm using 'dumeter' in case anyone cares to google for it.
p.s. I am in no way coming to any conclusion about your situation. Their is always a chance they are wrong and I wish you the best it fixing the problem. |

1 edit | I think Comcast is going on some bandwidth abusing banning spree.
I was using about 160-180Gb a month during the months December and February, and about 60-80 in the months in between, and this month I was probably around 80-100 when they called me saying 'we are giving you a warning about your bandwidth usage, if this happens again this year you will be cut off from our service for a year.'
While my usage is high, I am not at that magic 200Gb mark were many people are cut off. I sure not to hit that number, but now I don't where I should stop myself this month. |

upgrade ur package too
then call them and say, F*$% YOU!
after your done of course... or when they call you, either way.
edit: hah, 200GB, i did that in like 2 days and some change. comcast needs to get off their butts and actually reinforce their network for the digital age, or die. -- Loud and Clear |

Re: msg deleted so VoIP usage isnt a home thing? or watching IPTV isnt a home thing? or do they just make comcast and Timer Warner mad because they compete with their own services?
I'm sorry but microsoft beta testing is also a home hobby, we arnt paid for it, we do it for fun... so its technically not "work"... and to say hay we will give you outragious speeds, but then oh by the way you cant use them because the things that can use them we dont want you to use is ludicris... How many families with teens sit there and watch streaming videos a lot of the day or listen to music streaming all day... I know people from work that littearly stream music all day while they surf the net...
the really sad thing is the fact my sprint phone is unlimited service... I can pull 78KB/ps on it in our area with relatively low latency too... and I was told by multiple people after hounding them about it that there are "absoutly no bandwidth restrictions, unlike verizon" i guess its a selling point for them? but you'd think a cell network would be more restrictive then a cable network..... |

1 edit | Re: Comcast cut us off Comcast is not going to terminate for 80GB. One of three things is going on here...(1) The OP may have used only 80GB but what about the others in the house, (2) He is this virtual computer whiz but cannot secure his wireless network, or (3) (and most likely scenerio) he is trying to feed us all a line of BS! -- I'm not really sure what I am doing, but I'm doing it anyway! |
|
1 edit | stop jumping to conclusions and read what I said..
The original claim was 160GB then they terminated us for not "drastically reducing it" but we reduced it 80 to 90% and they STILL did it... and dont say I dont know how to secure my network... it is NOT on a wifi network, it is firewalled, it has no open ports except 80, 443, and SMTP/POP all the computers run anti-virus... any dont assume that the 50GB was just me, it was the ENTIRE NETWORK the bandwidth counter is ON THE ROUTER! that counts every bit on WAN traffic, and WAN traffic only... and this is not BS this is a true story... sorry its so freaking hard for you to believe something gawd there is no "hard limit" on anything comcast does and they seem to pick and choose limits randomly depending on where you live... on and by the way read the darn post correctly 20 + 30 GB is not 80GB... 20GB last month and 30GB and this month |

I think you were given the answer to your dilemna with this post several posts back now.
If that doesn't work, take it up with your cable franchise authority.
Taking you at your word which I see no reason not to..what may have happened is the first warning just somehow slipped through the cracks and resulted in you being disconnected instead. Because as you say, there's no reason they should terminate a 30gig per month user.
Arguing with someone over the phone about this will be difficult and, as you say, you can't even get them to call you back.
A face to face meeting with someone at the local office is in order IMHO. -- The Coyote captured the RR! Roadrunner Rick is now Comcastic! |

Re: Comcast cut us off They are not going to give a damn about you as an individual. You need to contact your local media (tv if possible) and get some negative PR going. Then they will take you seriously. Just be factual and let them know this is a growing problem. |
