| [XP Pro] Windows Update Problem
I've been trying to use Windows Update to get the latest patches. I'm suddenly having a problem that I've seen others post about here....WU just freezes and stops responding at checking for updates, the CPU cranks up to 99% and everything just sits there. I have to X out of WU as Task Manager won't open, which generates a send error report. Even then, the CPU stays at 99% and I still can't open Task Manager, even after WU closes. I had to reboot with the power button to get back to normal. I tried three times with the same result. I checked Event Viewer and there is an iexplore.exe hangapp error. I looked through the WindowsUpdate log, didn't see anything that jumped out at me, but I'm not sure what to look for, there's a lot of stuff there.
Last month's updates went fine. The only thing I've installed recently is HP All in One software, which I know is buggy, I had it uninstalled, but my son needed it, so I reinstalled it. Not sure if that would affect this.
Any advice would be appreciated. I'd like to get this working again. -- ~~"As long as America is an infidel enemy, terrorizing it is a duty." Sayed Imam Abdul-Aziz el-Sheriff~~

| I'm having the same problem. Looks like one of Microsoft's updates may have gone bonzo:
»support.microsoft.com/kb/916089/
Are you using Windows Update or Microsoft Update? I'm going to try Windows Update only. For Office 2003, I'm going to try Office Update. Not sure that will make any difference.
There's an msi.dll hotfix that may work. I'm looking for it now. |

The ironic thing is that the cpu gets so busy that it may be impossible to install the file. |

1 edit | reply to La Luna While waiting to see if anyone had a solution, I went to Start>WU and clicked on "change settings" on the left side of the page. I then switched to Windows Updates (instead of Microsoft Updates) at the bottom of that page.
That seemed to do the trick, I got three updates with out problems, although I don't think that gives Office updates. I got the info from the link below, but I saw a lot of people are having the same issue (some from a few years back even) on different websites:

Well I could (although I couldn't get the page for the Internet Explorer update to open in Nick's thread in the Security Forum, which, of course, was the most important update for me, lol....), but I'd really like to have this working properly. The page I made the switch on said I would have to reinstall the software if I wanted to use MS updates again. I'm also not sure if this disables update notifications.
This is what I got:

I don't use Office, or the Malicious Software Removal Tool, so the only one that affected me was the IE Cumulative. I downloaded it, but doubt I'll even install it. I haven't installed any of the last 3 or 4 IE Cumulatives, as I don't use IE (though I know people will say I should install it anyway). So it's been another easy month for me, I'm happy to say. |

Not sure why I just got it, it seems to be from last month, lol....
I don't use Office too much either, but I like to keep it updated. Sometimes my son's GF uses it. -- ~~"As long as America is an infidel enemy, terrorizing it is a duty." Sayed Imam Abdul-Aziz el-Sheriff~~

| Ah! An 'optional' update. They don't offer those to me anymore.
But thanks for the link, Luna! If a third-party driver should ever keep me from opening a file on one of my NTFS volumes, I now know where to go to correct the issue, don't I? |

| reply to La Luna Try to check what particular process is taking 100% CPU. It's possible to do by starting Process Explorer from Sysinternals before you run WU. If it's "svchost.exe -k netsvcs" then look at this thread: Why MU takes so long?. It contains references to some fixes. m$ tells that it's "known" problem and they have offered several fixes, some of them are fixing bugs in their previous fixes...
You may want to remove C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution folder and try to install KB927891 (as described here). -- Keep it simple, it'll become complex by itself... |

 Microsoft Update Error |
Just wanted to echo the others in the thread. For me, the "Checking for the latest updates for your computer" screen just runs and runs and runs. About 5-10 Minutes later, I get the error message posted above.
I get the same error using IE7 and IE6. I have not moved all my machines to IE7 yet, which is why I can still test both versions. All systems are running Windows XP SP2.
Going to see if I can switch back to "Windows Update" instead of "Microsoft Update" and get things the old way.
I used Microsoft Update last month on one of my machines, and it worked without any issues. So, not sure what is going on now. Hopefully, Microsoft gets it fixed soon.
EDIT:
I wanted to point out that I did the same thing La Luna did below
said by La Luna :While waiting to see if anyone had a solution, I went to Start>WU and clicked on "change settings" on the left side of the page. I then switched to Windows Updates (instead of Microsoft Updates) at the bottom of that page. The list of available updated came up really fast (under 30 seconds). I was then able to select the ones I wanted, and install them without any issues.
The one thing that I did notice is that I do have a few "critical updates" that are not security updates that I have never installed. I wonder if one of these would fix the "Microsoft Update" problem? The non-security critical updates that I see are
---------------------------------------------------
Update for Windows XP (KB930916) This is a reliability update. Install this update to resolve an issue where a third-party driver installed on a computer that is running Windows XP may prevent you from opening files successfully on a NTFS file system volume. After you install this item, you may have to restart your computer.
Update for Windows XP (KB916595) This is a reliability update for Windows XP machines. Install this update to prevent an issue in which you may receive a "Stop 0xD" error message on a computer that is running Windows XP Service Pack 2. The error may occur during startup, or after the system has started.
Update for Windows XP (KB920872) This is a reliability update for Windows XP machines. Install this audio component update to prevent memory corruption issues which may cause an unstable state on a computer that is running Windows XP Service Pack 2.
Update for Windows XP (KB922582) A problem has been identified in Filter Manager that can prevent you from installing updates from Windows update. You can help protect your computer by installing this update from Microsoft.
Update for Windows XP (KB900485) Install this update to prevent an issue in which you may receive a stop 0x7e in AEC.SYS error message on a computer that is running Windows XP Service Pack 2. The error may occur during startup, or after the system has started. AEC.SYS is the acoustic echo canceling driver.
Update for Windows XP (KB910437) Install this update to prevent or resolve an issue in which Windows Update and Automatic Updates can no longer download updates after an Access Violation error occurs when using the Automatic Updates service.
---------------------------------------------------
Not sure if any of these will solve our problems or not. But, I wanted to point out these updates, and see if someone has had the problem, installed one of these, and fixed it.
Thanks,

This issue is a mess, it's all over the internet!!
I keep reading things that say MS has released a fix which includes a new WSUS 3.0 (which should be applied along with KB927891), but I can't figure out if this is just for servers or if it's for stand alone machines. I'm really confused.

At this point, I'm going to leave well enough alone with using Windows Updates instead of MS Updates until something less convoluted comes along. -- ~~"As long as America is an infidel enemy, terrorizing it is a duty." Sayed Imam Abdul-Aziz el-Sheriff~~
