On April 25th - we all discovered Grid.org was closing its doors forever.
A few days later we found out, something I always had faith in - that our contributions were indeed counted
Our dedication and our determination to fight this beast also raised some questions... where do we go now?
Some of us transitioned to our worthy TSC project, while we examined other possible choices for cancer crunchin
Some we looked at really had no resources available, however that were good for a team effort.
There was one, however that did... (/me excited to introduce)
With careful & considerable review of available projects for our team, and garnered from your suggestions in a few threads - we believe theres a great replacement for UD
As a family forum of active crunchers.... .....and as a team that's ever focused on finding cures - our CPU cycles can once again fight cancer along side of childhood diseases with TSC
The World Community Grid..Or WCG, utilizes the UD client that we are all familiar with (as well as another platform for those that may wish options - under BOINC)
WCG even has a ..welcome mat out ..as someone noted in another thread here in the forum
They are partnered with IBM & have incredible resources. The researchers really do a good job of keeping you informed of what your CPU cycles are doing
and how things are going.
They communicate quite well, in other words.
We know their Help Defeat Cancer Project (HDC) recently ended, but there is another cancer project slated for release soon
Here's a clip from the WCG:
World Community Grid has started work on a new cancer project to discover ways to accelerate the crystallization process used in studying cancer protein structure using X-ray Crystallography, which will help researchers identify proteins involved in cancers and lead to new drug therapies and cures. We plan to launch this new cancer project in the May/June 2007 time frame.
Currently there is HPF2 - Human Proteome Folding - Phase 2
The Institute for Systems Biology is using some of the data from this project to "characterize biomarkers that can be used for early diagnosis and sub-classification of Human cancers."
More on that here: »www.worldcommunitygrid.org/proje···earch.do
There will be new FAQ's & links going up soon - if you have a question of a technical nature & need help, please start a new topic in the forum |

2 edits | I think this is a really exciting project for our team. Just like the grid.org project it gives us a good cancer project with hopes of more in the future. It obviously gives us some options of additional disease fighting projects, but the HPF2 project (which is of course Phase 2 of the project grid.org ran back in the day) and the soon to be introduced new cancer project seem extremely promising. Another great thing is that scientists involved with the projects often post updates and answer questions in the forums.
On top of the great projects, we have an option for which client to run. This inclues the familiar UD client (an updated one over grid.org) and the BOINC client (which runs on Linux, Mac and dual core processors)! They are both good and both run the same projects (mostly). The client is just the shell that the crunching programs (i.e algorithms looking at proteins to find cures) run in. So, it's all about personal preference. You can download both and try them out to see which you like best.
Already a BOINC or WCG user? If you already have BOINC setup or already run WCG, you know how to add a project and probably join a team. The URL is www.worldcommunitygrid.org and the team name/link is BroadbandReports.com Team Discovery
WCG setup instructions! Below I have directions for signing up and then installing both clients. You decide which client you want.. both are good. If you're a bit confused and are familiar with grid.org, just download the UD client.
First, sign up:
Go to »www.worldcommunitygrid.org/reg/v···ister.do and fill out the form:

Here you can also select what projects you want to run and select your team. (can do this later too)
To select the team now, click the Select a Team link, in the new window, enter "BroadbandReports" click search. Hit the "Select" button next to the team name, "BroadbandReports.com Team Discovery"

Back on the registration page, select your projects, you country and click Continue.
Now, select the client you want to download and click continue.

For BOINC Install, scan down a bit.
UD Client Install For the UD client:
Install like any other program. Once it installs, you'll get the standard UD login screen. Click "Click here if you are an existing member" and enter the login info

Look familiar?

By default UD will start automatically with windows. It will also change your screensaver to the WCG screensaver. You will likely want to change this to blank or none to save on CPU cycles.
BOINC Client Install For the Windows BOINC:
During the install, you will see the following window. You will likely want to deselect "Make BOINC your default screensaver"

After installing, you will see this windows:

I received a few timeouts, then the top screen went away. This is the main window:

Clicking on messages will give you detail of what is/has downloaded and other information.
Clicking on "Graphics Available" will give you more detailed and graphical information of the running task.
For more advanced users, click on "Advanced View" which will take you to the classic BOINC view. I'm sure future FAQ's will discuss this further.
Most of the config will occur through the website. There is a lot to learn, but little you have to know. For those who like configuring and looking at stats, click on the "My Grid" link on the toolbar and explore. There is also invaluable information at the forums, especially, the Community-maintained FAQs .
I've been running this project for a short while and can't think of anything I'd rather be running, right at the side of CommunityTSC. -- I Smell Cures! -- Our Hope |

It puts it back by default, like Grid used to on new installs |

| reply to lilhurricane It does seem that when you select projects it does not save under your UD profile, but only under your BOINC profile. (Meaning BOINC users can ignore this)
So, UD users, if you want to select which projects to run, login to WCG, then select "Device Manager".

Next, select the profile that is associated with the Agent you want to change. For example, I will click "Default" in the image above.
Now select your projects.

Submit and you're off!
If you want to kill your current task, open your task manager and kill the ud_43243214.exe program (the numbers vary). This will cause the agent to download a new task. -- I Smell Cures! -- Our Hope |

| reply to lilhurricane I am going to move my blades over tonight when I get home. Do I just put them under my profile or are we going to create a profile for these blades? Obviously, my profile for my work computer is in the broadbandreports Team. Just curious. -- My Domain Nightfall's Hockey and Life Journal |
