[ALL] PermaBoost

Anyone that has powerboost in arizona have "permaboost" where the boost stays on all the time? I think a friend of mine has it because it downloads at 'boosted' speeds for the whole file. or is cox testing speeds faster than the 12mbps currently offered as top speed?

ya i have perma boost as well as several of my friends do and i think this is the main reason of the massive slowdowns during peak hours ,where as before you only had a slight slow down during peak hours

If that's the case then its a gigantic malfunction, its supposed to only "boost" if the bandwidth is there. If its not, you're not supposed to see any boost.

said by Cox :
Powerboost delivers an additional chunk of bandwidth during the first quarter or half of a significant download -- provided network capacity is available -- after which the speed is throttled back to your regular capped speed. The service is designed to please users who occasionally grab large files and is less useful for p2p users eager for sustained throughput.

anyone care to explain the technical side in laymans terms?

like the cable modems are uncapped and control is on the CMTS side or w/e and we can look forward to powerdeboostes for uses of torrents and anything else cox wishes to repress?

The modem should be uncapped for few secs to few minutes then obey their maxbps= settings in their config files. some modems are staying uncapped all the time. the same thing happened with comcast when they enabled powerboost.

I know this is OT but I have seen Powerboost work awesome when downloading torrents that are well seeded, such as Linux isos. The client is constantly creating new connections, and that triggers the powerboost.

Have you checked your speed during times of 'peak' traffic? Guarantee you won't always see 12Mb+ then: try 4Mbps [or lower?]. Also, the LVCM test sitejust showed me 17Mb at 1:30 AM but 2Wire comes in at 12. Assume this variance has to do with the packet size that Cox pushes for their tests (small). I believe Permaboost (Perma frost) is optimized for larger packets.

Someone just made up the term permaboost in a sarcastic jest. There is no such animal.

(edit) I found this link on the cox support site. It gives a detailed explanation on power boost works.

Can you post some speed test results show a "permaboost"? Curious to see if it acutally stay constant, as opposed to bursting at first then leveling off.

Use this and you can see how the PowerBoost shuts down after 20 seconds or so »ftp://ftp1.optonline.net/test512

It starts for me and I get 2.5MB/s. Then it cuts out and I get 1.1 MB/s.
