Current Verizon DSL Pricing Questions

Doing a piece for the front page that will compare major provider prices and speeds. Will also touch briefly on advertised speeds versus what your bills actually are.

Just wanted to make sure these were the current correct speeds and ask some questions:

One Year Contract Plans:

768kbps/128kbps: $14.99
3Mbps/768kbps: $19.99 first six months, $29.99 next six months

Month to Month Plans:

3Mbps/768kbps: $37.99

•Are there any other plans?•Is Verizon offering naked DSL? If not, how much do you pay for each tier, your landline, and assorted fees each month?

Verizon offers Naked DSL for $5 over the listed prices. However, there have been various price differences for each of the plans lately, probably depending on location. Currently here in South Jersey, the prices you listed are correct, but some have noted prices of $19.99, $21.99, & $22.99 for the 768 plan and $29.99, $31.99, & I think $33.99 for 3.0. Also, the 3.0 price you have listed is only for new customers, not those renewing current contracts.

Not for me, it wasn't. My "renewal" rate for an existing customer was $31.99, not $29.99, if i renewed for another year. I was paying $34.99 a month. I'm in the Northern VA area.

Anyway, I was going to cancel my DSL and then sign up as a "new" customer again to take advantage of the $19.99 for months 1-6, and $29.99 for months 7-12, but retentions saved me the hassle of doing that and extended the new offer terms/deal to me without having to cancel.

David

3/768 plan is really 3000/768 or 1500/384 depending on distance.

My office 768/128 VZ DSL (actually a residential plan) is $14.95 plus a $2.36 "surcharge" they started when the FCC said that the USF didn't apply to DSL. 12 month contract, free 1st month for ordering online.

Interesting they advertise their existing speeds as "new" in Virginia?

»news.moneycentral.msn.com/provid···=6916661

Or could Virginia users not get these speeds previously?

Karl...

Don't know if this is of value to you but...

I have a month-to-month DSL package, bundled to a Verizon Freedom phone plan and am billed the following (as of the Apr, 2007 bill, May bill not up yet):

DSL (3000/768) = $37.95
Bundle discoount = 8.00 (-)
Tax recovery fee = 1.62
Total DSL Pkg: = $31.57

I have had this plan since the end of Jan, 2005. They hiked the DSL rate from $34.95 to $37.95 a while back but increased the bundle discount from $5 to $8 so there was no net change except that the FUSF disappeared and the tax recovery fee appeared (jerks!). Also, I am on the "One Bill" plan for Phone, DSL and VZN Wireless.

As you might suspect, I am reluctant to make any changes to either my phone or DSL packages since one never knows what volcano that will trigger in the VZN billing scheme...

They used to offer a 7.1 residential plan, which I still have. Currently paying $31.95 ($37.95 - $8.00 bundle discount) month to month. The original plan was $99.00 a month on a 1 year contract.

everyone can currently get "naked" Verizon DSL for $5 more, or is that still restricted by market?

Verizon's prices vary more than gas prices.

I just called to renew my 3.0 service. I currently pay $29.99. I was told that I am not eligible for new customer deals, which I expected, but I was also told that my new rate upon renewal will be $33.99 for the same 3.0 service.

I guess it's time to call and cancel to see what the retention department can do.

Early draft for the Verizon DSL section (there will also be a FiOS section) of the piece, which will compare service pricing (and accessibility to said pricing) from the largest 8 providers. Note that I'm just concerned right now with pegging down base prices offered to new customers on-line. Please correct anything I have wrong:

quote:
Verizon offers highlights of their DSL tiers on their website, but detailed information on upstream speeds is hidden behind a prequalification wall. Once inside, you'll find their pricing differs depending on whether you're willing to sign a one-year contract:
•768kbps/128kbps : $14.99 (one year contract)•3Mbps/768kbps : $19.99 first six months, $29.99 next six months (one year contract)•3Mbps/768kbps: $37.99 (no contract)
Our users inform us that Verizon used to offer a 7Mbps residential tier. Now if customers want faster than 3Mbps DSL they need to shell out $99 for a 7Mbps/768kbps business line. Keep in mind these prices don't include various fees. Customers can get "naked" or unbundled DSL for an additional $5 per month (though not in all areas). Check out our forum discussion with Verizon users to see potential price variations based on geography & contract renewal.
I can't get too deep into variations by geography or contract variations or the piece will be just completely unreadable. I will do another piece down the road on contracts.....

I would also like to know how much you save if you bundle DirecTV? Was that $2 a month or something?
