Me too, but for Vista...KB936824...something to do with iPod...I don't need to install this, even though it is 'recommended'. I don't have an iPod nor does anyone touch my computer...under 'penalty of death by their nana'!

KB927891 downloaded on one of my XP Home computers with no issues. Downloaded part way on my XP Pro machine and decided to disappear. No sign of it yet on my other XP Home machine. I guess it will get around to these two eventually. No rush.

Me too, required reboot after.
!!!
This must be a new version of the Hotfix for high CPU usage using Microsoft Update, et al.

See this thread as to what occurs:

That is exactly what it is. In the detailed hotfix info, users are advised to expect high activity associated with Automatic Updates but computers should be responsive and not locking up.

Microsoft will push WSUS Agent 3.0 out by June 30. Based upon the delay and what I've seen in other forums, I figure there are still some bugs to be worked out.

I believe Agent 3.0 will force computers over to Microsoft Update. If it goes well, expect a termination notice from Microsoft in the 2H 2007 specifying the end of Windows Update.

Seen it on two machines. One is my mom's at home. The
other is a workstation at my bench here at work (not the
one I'm posting this from, though.)

It will probably be waiting for me on my home PC when
I get home this afternoon.

Actually, agent 3.0 has been pushed, my son's MCE picked it up from MU last week but my other XP's hasn't seen it yet. Don't know how MS choose who gets it but yes one of the box here was updated.

I got it today also. What I don't understand is that I have the updater set to download but not to install but to notify me. It downloaded, installed, and re-booted. Did this happen to anyone else?

Nope.
As per the screen shot, mine just notifies.
I have to select and download them.

I usually go to WU and get them anyways!

Microsoft Security Advisory KB927891 - fix for Windows Installer (MSI) problems
Symptoms:

Your system may appear to become unresponsive when Windows Update or Microsoft Update is scanning for updates that use Windows installer, and you may notice that the CPU usage for the svchost process is showing 100%.

When you try to install an update from Windows Update or from Microsoft Update, you experience the following symptoms:

• Your system may appear to become unresponsive when Windows Update or Microsoft Update is scanning for updates that use Windows Installer.

• You receive an access violation error in svchost.exe. This access violation stops the Server service and the Workstation service.

• A memory leak occurs when Windows Update or Microsoft Update is scanning for updates that use Windows Installer.

• Windows Update or Microsoft Update scans take a very long time, sometimes hours, to complete.

The fix is now available on WSUS and via Windows/Microsoft Update, and will require a restart after installation.

Please note that this update is the first part of a two-part fix that is the comprehensive solution to the problem. In June, another update will involve the Windows Update client. The update for the Windows Update client will also be automatically offered through Automatic Updates.

I just somewhat figured out what happened. My auto update setting was changed from notify me to auto. But I don't know how that happened. Maybe one of the updates from the last time changed it.

I sure hope that's not the case because it's scary to think so.

You need both parts to make the fix work: KB 927891 and the new client for Windows Update/Automatic Update/WSUS/SMS. For links, see:

I've noticed a similar change in the last month or so: that a "scheduled" MS update/ patch has been downloaded to my machine without my knowledge, but then the MS 'bug' appears and when I click it it offers to install the downloaded item without telling me before or during the installation process what it is. This is a bit annoying, and on the 22nd I was concerned as I didn't see it in the Security Updates list when I checked. I have to look and see what my setting is, but I'm pretty certain it was set to "notify", not "download and then notify"
