| Microsoft Security Advisory (927891)Fix for Windows Installe
Microsoft Security Advisory (927891)Fix for Windows Installer Published: May 22, 2007 Today we are announcing the availability of an update that does not address a security vulnerability, but is a high priority for customers in keeping their systems updated. The update addresses the following issue:
Your system may appear to become unresponsive when Windows Update or Microsoft Update is scanning for updates that use Windows installer, and you may notice that the CPU usage for the svchost process is showing 100%.
When you try to install an update from Windows Update or from Microsoft Update, you experience the following symptoms:
Your system may appear to become unresponsive when Windows Update or Microsoft Update is scanning for updates that use Windows Installer.
You receive an access violation error in svchost.exe. This access violation stops the Server service and the Workstation service.
A memory leak occurs when Windows Update or Microsoft Update is scanning for updates that use Windows Installer.
Windows Update or Microsoft Update scans take a very long time, sometimes hours, to complete.
We encourage Windows customers to review and install this update. This update will be offered automatically through Automatic Updates. For more information about this issue, including download links for the available non-security update, please review Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 927891.
Please note that this update is the first part of a two-part fix that is the comprehensive solution to the problem. In June, another update will involve the Windows Update client. The update for the Windows Update client will also be automatically offered through Automatic Updates.

| reply to NICK ADSL UK Thanks, Nick. Great info, as always.
Since MS Updates & I don't see eye-to-eye on how things should be handled these days, I guess I won't be installing this at the moment. Always good to know it's around & available, though.
Thanks again! |

| reply to NICK ADSL UK Question regarding this update - I have my updates to notify me but not to install. When I got home this evening, I found that it was downloaded, installed, and re-booted my machine. Anyone have any idea why this happened? -- TH ~ NE ~ EPN ~ NC ~ TD |

I echo that.. woke up to a bunch of rebooted and offline computers.. I'd sure like to be notified when my systems are going to be rebooted.. and, it's not too healthy for my servers uptime either.. -- Webmaster - Steve - - - - - - - - - - - - »ppnhosting.com »www.1-gb.net »pokemonpalace.net |

| reply to NICK ADSL UK I am glad that they came up with this fix. I was scratching my head for days, a couple of weeks ago, trying to diagnose the exact problem that they describe. Two users' PCs, I had to wipe and stripe as a last resort. Luckily, we keep images of the original configs on their HDD. |

When I got home this evening, I found that it was downloaded, installed, and re-booted my machine. Anyone have any idea why this happened? Sashwa, I had two PCs that automatically downloaded, installed and rebooted by themselves. The third PC (my PC) only had the yellow shield indicating it was ready to install the update, but I initiated the install. See Dadkins' post here also: »Automatic Updates today(22nd)? |

1 edit | I found this thread from David's thread in Security.
I came home to a green shield with a check mark. I looked in my Event Viewer saw the installation and the reboot.
I just wonder why it installed on it's own when I have it set for notify only.
Edit: I just somewhat figured out what happened. My auto update setting was changed from notify me to auto. But I don't know how that happened. Maybe one of the updates from the last time.

1 edit | reply to NICK ADSL UK Its a very welcome update as its been driving me crazy at work, Windows XP + Office 2003 = horrificly slow "scan for updates" at Microsoft Update. Even though I use WSUS, I still like to scan for updates every now and then, this was really driving me crazy.
EDIT: and glad to see they finally acknowledged it impacts Windows 2000 as well, because it most certainly does! -- "Don't steal. The government hates competition." |

| reply to NICK ADSL UK Thanks, NICK ADSL UK
I've also been experiencing very long response times in WU and svchost.exe running like crazy.
Installed the fix but it doesn't seem to have solved my problem.
I have Automatic Updates off. |
