Re: Decrease in HD "Sharp"ness

Jeep, I am hoping that they are still repairing the original equipment that failed, and this is only temporary. I see exactly the same thing with the HD picture not being as sharp. Something in the new setup is definitely throttling the HD bit rate. They use a fancy Juniper Networks rack frame to distribute the video from the SHE to the local headends, and to the CO. It's an ERX-1440 broadband router frame at the CO and local Headend if I recall, not sure about the particular unit at the SuperHeadend though. One of the channel cards must have gone bad, there are various options available so you might be able to figure if they used an alternate bandwidth cart on a temporary basis, and be able to replace the full rate card when they get a new or rebuilt unit.
More info if you want too look: »www.juniper.net/products_and_ser···dex.html

Of course we will all suffer another service disruption when they switch back to the original configuration.

I can't wait until this weekend to see if they turn out the lights at 5PM Friday, and pretend they won't have a problem.

Hey JeepMatt,

My wife noticed when watching TNT HD NBA last night, the court does not have the polished look like it used to. I watched portions of the game and noticed the court shine flickers. We would like this fixed ASAP.

Yeah H8 - they all look like stretched SD channels now. I'm really upset.

Re: Decrease in HD "Sharp"ness

Their first reply was - the Network Team looked at the HD channels and they were "fine".

Now that I Have more ammo to give them - I hope I get a real answer this time.

I won't know though until this afternoon at the earliest, as Gustavo is in CA and doesn't start the Direct threads until the PM.

Re: Decrease in HD "Sharp"ness

I don't have a HD box so I'm missing out on all the fun it seems. Shame.

They (network technicians) always initially say things are "fine" even when there's a problem until you raise a big stink about the problem. (See: the HBO VOD problem that I was experiencing, and I'm still experiencing, and will apparently continue to experience until August).

Maybe it's time for a bunch of users here to file complaints with the presidential appeal/complaint number about the crappy service around the Philly area?

I might file a complaint about the VOD service in general. It is like watching a you tube video with all the compression/encoding. Where is all this bandwidth we hear about?

Re: Decrease in HD "Sharp"ness

I think we may be in business.

After hanging outside a bit, and coming back in, all of a sudden, Food HD has that pop again.

Perhaps the problem has been fixed!

Jeep. I Dunno bout' dat.

FoodHD looks BETTER, but HGTVHD looks the same. Still looks WORSE than it originally was. Maybe it's only the current program. I'll keep watching.

MHD has that pop again this morning as well. I think we're back.
I was watching the Tudors on SHO HD last night and it looked very grainy.

BTW I also got around to watching LOST last evening. All I can say is WOW. Comcast's local HD feeds SUCK compared to this.

Re: Decrease in HD "Sharp"ness

I'm off today-

And it looks like we're back to where we were last night. Something was switched again.

The grainy-ness is back...the sharpness is gone.

Grrrrr...

AND - even though they acknowledge the problem as of yesterday - apparently i'm the only who's actually opened a ticket regarding it.

SO - anyone else out there in PA / DE - please call in and open a ticket - or put a thread in the Direct forum here.

Re: Decrease in HD "Sharp"ness

It's amazing.

I'm watching the same exact show this AM that was on Food HD last night - and the picture is much worse.

Can't get much better of a comparison than that!
Showtime HD looks like garbage.

I really hope they come through today and fix this.

Verizon! I have THIRTY people coming to a BBQ this weekend that will see FIOS TV...will they see a great picture that was back for a short time last night? Or the dull grainy one I have yet again today?

Hope you decide on the former!

Re: Decrease in HD "Sharp"ness

Jeep, we are heading into a 3 day weekend.

What do you want to bet they will leave at 5PM tonight, and not give it another thought until Tuesday??

Another typical Fios TV weekend in Philly.

HD channels look ok to me at 4:30 PM - channel 3 (news), ESPN, ESPN2, DiscoveryHD all looking very good. FoodHD - I have seen better, but it might be the production not the broadcast.

Re: Decrease in HD "Sharp"ness

RAH-
Nope, you're seeing it on Food.

It isn't affecting ALL channels. Stations like Food and HGTV HD you notice it the most b/c they are some of the channels that are sent at the highest HD resolution.

Re: Decrease in HD "Sharp"ness

I've also noticed a drop-off in picture quality. I noticed it first on the NBC evening news a few days ago.

Guess all that bandwidth went bye bye.

Re: Decrease in HD "Sharp"ness

I gotta think that all this is happening for a reason. They're probably trying to install new equipment and are hitting problems. I have no doubt that it will clear up in the near future. Maybe trying to figure out how to offer HD VOD, or something like that? Although, to be honest, I haven't noticed much difference, if any.

They are probably doing a new HD compression.going from 2:1 to 3:1.

Re: Decrease in HD "Sharp"ness

I may be mistaken, but I believe that Verizon rebroadcasts what they get from the networks with no recompression.
EDIT: That's not to say that the problem discussed in this thread doesn't exist, I just don't think it's a new compression scheme.

Re: Decrease in HD "Sharp"ness

Believe me, it's not a new compression scheme.

It's a problematic area of the network.

Re: Decrease in HD "Sharp"ness

JeepMatt,

I just got my first HD TV yesterday and I'm in the west Philly suburbs so I was concerned about the problem you're having. I think everything here is fine but I don't have any previous experience to compare it to. If we can see how widespread this problem is, it may help them diagnose the situation.

Are there any HD channels that always look bad at your location that clearly shouldn't? I see that some of them are more exceptional than others (e.g. Discovery, local channels, ESPNs, HGTV, Food, always look fantastic). Others are more changeable – it seems to depend on what's showing.

I think I get everything except for the Cinemax HD.

Now I just wish there were more HD channels (like everyone, I suppose)!

Re: Decrease in HD "Sharp"ness

Actually, tonight Food HD is very blurry and compressed looking - with a splash of grainy-ness.

Some of the SD's are looking quite nasty tonight too.

Just continued problems. Oh well.

We'll be moving into Day 16 tomorrow.

Honestly Cee - before this happened - ALL the HD's were amazing. Yeah, you could tell if a Cinemax HD was showing a movie from the 80's - but it still looked fantastic. Now it's just a mess.

Re: Decrease in HD "Sharp"ness

I just checked Food HD ... crystal clear.

I would be climbing the walls ... It's so frustrating when you're doing everything you can to get something resolved and it's still a mess.

I sure wish you the best on this and I hope they're very close to a resolution!

I am testing the exact equipment in the lab that Verizon uses. HD Channels are compressed. You can do up to a 6:1 compression. Verizon does not have to rebroadcast without compressing.

Nobody said they couldn't recompress, just that they don't. HD signals come from the broadcaster compressed already to some degree...
