L337 Premium join:2005-03-10 Chicago, IL | What is your Anti-Virus, Spyware/Adware protection setup?
I've been using aVast 4.7 lately and it seems pretty good until I finally got a Adware! I haven't got an Adware in such a long long time and now this happens. What kind of setup do you guys use? What would you guys recommend as a good setup? |

3 edits | My realtime setup is Avira's premium security suite. I also have AVG Antispyware (formally ewido) and/or SuperAntiSpyware for on demand scanning.
Unfortunately, no program is 100 percent effective. For that reason, you might want to use a limited account for surfing the web or use dropmyrights as DavidR on the avast forum recommends. |

I don't recall ever seeing an anti-malware software with the guarantee of 'you will never ever for the rest of your life have to concern with a piece of malware infecting your machine'. Good luck with that one. |

I use avast Home but I don't run it at default - I turn it up!
Even when I scan with... everything else you can probably name(weird hobby), all that is ever found by any of them is... cookies.
*TO ME* cookies are irrelavent. They're harmless.
So, if you use a good AV but run it at higher than default, and keep it updated, *MOST* things will be caught *AS* they try to get in.
Some people feel that full-on Web scanning is a waste and that detection on access or when "something" runs is enough.
Bulls***!
Common logic dictates that - if ??? is not on the machine, there is no chance of it possibly being accessed or running.
Be wary of ANYONE that tells you otherwise!
"It's harmless if it doesn't run" KMA!
*I* don't want 10? 20? 50? pieces of malware sitting in various locations on my HDDs waiting for the random click to activate "them".
YMMV. -- Think outside the Fox... Opera |

1 edit | reply to L337 I use NOD32 with Sygate firewall on my XP Pro box. I also run an occasional scan with Spybot S&D. I don't use anything on my Ubuntu box....because it doesn't need it.
-edit- I also utilize a wrt54g router with DDWRT firmware with firewall. |

Must agree that I do not recall either...of ever seeing any anti malware program that offers a 100% guarantee.....an if one actually did I would I sure as heck would know its not telling the truth. Its just not possible for any anti malware program to give such a guarantee. Without going into details of my set-up....I have found that using a virtual computer offers a layer of protection because upon re-booting the computer returns to its orginal clean state. But virtual computers are not for everyone...sure they are easy enough to use.....but I certainly do not run in virtual mode all the time....an yet, considering how corrupt the internet has become as well as how malware vendors tactics are forever changing....I would not seriously question if the time will come when we are forced to use virual computers. |

NAV 2007, BOClean, Zone Alarm Pro with spyware prevention enabled on the third. Automatic weekly scans with NAV 2007 and Zone Alarm Pro.
Windows Defender is installed and it, too, runs an automatic weekly scan.
Three weekly scans by three security products and nothing is ever found. Spybot S & D and Lavasoft's Adaware is installed and I rarely run scans with them. Seems kind of redundant if three other programs run scans and they come up empty-handed.
It's what's working for me. |

| reply to L337 I run Avira AntiVir PE Classic on a limited user account in Windows XP. I don't run a software firewall or antispyware, and my system has not been compromised since I set it up this way several years ago.
I'm behind a Linksys WRT54G, so I am provided inbound protection by NAT and the SPI firewall.
I subscribe to the Leo Laporte school of thought when it comes to software firewalls. I know that bothers some people, but it has worked well for me. I encourage everyone to find a solution that works best for them and stick to it. Just because this method works for me does not mean it is the end-all solution for everybody. In short, to each his own.
I use common sense when web browsing and make sure that all of my software is up-to-date with the latest security patches available.
However, when I set up a computer for a friend or family member, I do run additional software: Avast! Antivirus, Spybot S & D with immunization, SpywareBlaster, Ad-Aware, and Windows Defender. I provided instructions on how to use this software before I consider the job "complete." -- Been around the world and found That only stupid people are breeding The cretins cloning and feeding And I don't even own a TV. |

| reply to L337 I'm wondering too... As dadkins asked, what adware are we talking about?
Beyond that, what browser are you using? If it's IE, consider using Firefox or Opera (except for Windows Updates.) They aren't perfect (as noted above, nothing is) but when all 3 are ran in their default setups, they are safer from drive-by's than IE is. |

| reply to L337 Even though this topic has come up numerous times here in this forum, given the way malware seems to be changing, it is worth a repost every few months or so.
My current setup is Avast 4.7, the MVPS hosts file, Sygate Personal Firewall Pro, SpywareBlaster, and Mozilla 1.7.13. The latter is on the list because IE is so tied in with the OS that exploits and drive by downloads are more likely.
And in the extermely unlikely event anything gets past Sygate, Avast, or the hosts file, the last line of defense is SpybotSD.
But more important than any of that is a good measure of common sense. -- "The trouble with computers, of course, is that they are very sophisticated idiots." - Doctor Who (from Robot) We are the Hacker Collective: Resistance Is Futile - All Your AACS Keys Will Be Assimilated. |
