Love bug love: fast, furious

here's a cute story in one of our local papers (have to type it out). one got in my shirt today, and then at the most inopportune time, he just came right out and flew away I hear they like White. I came out of walmart once and there were orgies of them on my car. Once when i was little, i saw one by itself unattached. I thought it was "broken"

......

They're the couple next door in desparate need of drapery, the eternal newlyweds, the definitive PDAers.
King of sweet. Extremely gratuitous. Perpetually connected. Meet the Love Bugs.

Technically termed plecia nearctica, those orange-and-black bugs are known for their immodesty - mating mid-air, linked junk-to-junk (LOL!!)

They fly united in every state along the Gulf of Mexico as well as Georgia and South Carolina. They emerge with the urge to merge between March and December, with the largest love fest happening...right now.

When this odd copulating couple clings to your clothes or leave passion marks across your windshield - especially when the passenger seat is empty - it's hard to feel the love.

You're at a red light, alone in your car, picking up takeout - dinner for one again - when they buzz by.

Hovering above the windshield are the hefty hoochie and her lusty little lovers in the throes. It's a booty-call so vivid that bow-chika-bow-ow is almost audible.

Love bug courtship is much like your own experience with mating. Cold, brief and impersonal. AFter three to nine months of maturation, love bugs emerge.

Males come first. (really? )

Categoring themselves by size, as so many males do, they hover, waiting for their lady loves. Like in high school, the big burly boys snag the hotties.

Bobbing above the big boys are the average Joes. HIgher up, the pipsqueaks.

When the females debut, like dirty debutantes, they fly through the swarm of suitors until a guy grabs them. They fall to the ground, where the sex starts. NO time for Barry White (LOL!!!) A love bug lifetime is, at most, seven days. The patient guy risks dying a virgin.

The lucky in love spend about three days together gorging on nectar and pollen, snorting tailpipe exhaust, flaunting their marathon lust.

Eat, copulate, repeat.

You're walking alone, alone, when here they come again. They're still at it. Swat! Swat! Die, love bugs, die!!

When the love bugs separate, the male dies, so he can't date her best friend. the widow lays as many as 600 eggs. Then, she dies too.

After putting their lovin' out there for the world to see, they die alone.

You've got to love that.

Re: Love is in the air! (Southeast Forum Version)

The good news: I'll be leaving these annoying pests behind as I trek up north Friday for the summer.
The bad news is I'll have to contend with the over abundance of Mosquitoes.
I prefer the annoyance.

It's always the female of any species that creates all the problems.

Yep... You see the front of my truck from my round trip to Lake City and back. Looks like a lot of love bugs were unhappy and committed suicide..

And the worst part is we are in stage 3 water restrictions and can only wash our vehicles one day a week between 4-8 AM and 4-8PM.

Windshield wipers and washer fluid did nothing but smear them into black and white stinking mess.

It's the female that "splats" ..according to some reading...

All the stores are sold out of fluid anyways, but car washes are booming

It's funny how we cannot drive to extinction the species we wish to eradicate.

In the late 70's early 80's traveling on Florida's Turnpike during the day in May or September was dangerous.
You would hit a swarm and 2 seconds later you could not see out the windshield.
Windshield wipers and washer fluid did nothing but smear them into black and white stinking mess.
They're bad now, but nothing like it was back then.

Not here en masse yet. There are few animals I despise and this is one of them.

And just to help clarify for those who still believe
said by »www.snopes.com/critters/lurkers/lovebugs.asp :

Love bugs are not the result of a genetic cloning experiment gone wrong, nor were they unwittingly loosed from a research facility charged with studying exotic insects. They also weren't bio-engineered as a natural solution to the mosquito problem. (Love bugs do not eat mosquitos: the adults do not eat at all, and larvae feed on decaying plant material.) These overly amorous critters are native to Central America; the best guess as to how they came to these United States places them as undiscovered stowaways who arrived by ship in Galveston or New Orleans around 1920. They migrated into Florida in 1947 from Louisiana, looked around, liked what they saw, and decided to stay. Their natural capacity for reproduction took care of the rest.
