Static IP = 3 times my current cost?

I'm currently on the $17.95 a month plan for 1.5 mbps down with DHCP.

I'd like to have a static IP. Just one. I don't need 5.

DSL Extreme says the lowest priced plan with static IP's is $44.95 a month. Nearly 3 times the cost.

Is there something I'm missing? Anything?

Wow. I certainly hope that changes before my contract expires, especially if another provider offers a plan with a static IP for less. Hard to justify almost $30 a month for 1 (or 5) static IP's.

ISP's offer static ip's either in block/29 or 8 of them. Yes price is high, being that a lot of people got no need for static it cost a lot.

I think it's more because there is not a lot of competition in static IPs. (read: AT&T charges an even bigger fortune). I'm not a big fan, but Earthlink offers static IP as a $15 add-on, you might check into them.

I do, from dyndns.org.

But twice now, it went kaput, and has caused a number of problems I'd like to avoid by having a static IP.

(By kaput, I mean I no longer had a dyndns account. Just like *that*

You can try using logmein.

www.logmein.com (Just a personal recommendation and not a DSLX one)

If you log in to your account on the DSLextreme website and click on modify my subscription it will tell you exactly what plans you qualify for and the pricing. Let me know if you need any help and I also use logmein.com to access my network at home, it works great!

I did.. It didn't show anything for static IP Plans. When I called, I was told the cheapest one is 3 times what I pay now. From $17.95 to (IIRC) $49.95.

If you are running a server or want log into your PC remotely, static IP facilitates this by keeping your PC fixed at the same address. It is also useful as additional security layer to VPN and other specialized uses. If a user has a static IP, one can limit access to a specific IP address.

IP addresses are like the internet's telephone numbers. A dynamic IP is like having a phone number that changes periodically. Dynamic IP locator services are available that attempt to keep track of your IP when it changes, but that means being dependent on some other service and software to keep it updated.
