1 edit | Robert Soloway arrested, Spam continues to flood inboxs
Spam bust doesnt stop flow of junk Arrest of Robert Alan Soloway not expected to make much of a dent in volume of nuisance e-mail. By Anik Jesdanun AP Internet Writer NEW YORK Junk e-mail continued to hit mailboxes around the world Thursday, despite the arrest a day earlier of a man described as one of the worlds most prolific spammers.
Even if Robert Alan Soloway is ultimately convicted and his operations shuttered, spam experts say dozens are in line to fill the void.
In the short term, the effect its going to have is more symbolic more than anything else, said John Levine, co-author of Fighting Spam for Dummies. Soloway is a large spammer, but hardly the only large spammer.
Levine said Soloway was a good target because he operates in the United States and has taken few steps to cover his tracks.
Soloway, 27, was once on a top 10 list of spammers kept by The Spamhaus Project, an international anti-spam organization. Others have since topped him, mostly based in Russia and other countries out of reach of U.S. or European law.
But Soloway remains on a Spamhaus list of about 135 spammers deemed responsible for as much as 80 percent of all junk e-mail, and one Spamhaus official considers him in the top 20. »www.timesleader.com/business/200···ART.html

SEATTLE (Reuters) - Charges against a man accused of being one of the Internet's most notorious spammers could spell relief from millions of unwanted message clogging e-mail in-boxes, computer security officials said on Thursday.
"This is a great day for the Internet," said Patrick Peterson, vice president of technology for IronPort Systems, which provides e-mail and Web security products. "Everyone involved in clapping those handcuffs on (him) are heroes." »www.reuters.com/article/internet···20070531 --

| That is the meat of it isn't it?
In all the news over this I do not see where they claim to have successfully dismanteled his net. Can they even be sure they have it all? He could give up half his net and still have thousands of Bots still working every day makeing him money. After all a bot-net is automated. He could be tried, convicted and serve his time and still get out even richer than he was when he wennt in. I mean he is shure to have back up servers and they have back ups as well. In reality he could drop dead and his net could continue on in perpetuity. His arrest is a good thing, but unless they can get all of his net,,,, did they really acomplish anything?????? |

Sucks dont it. All true to. Running for ever i kind of dout something will happen to each installed bot or infected host. Lets not forget its not like this guy is supper hacker folks he infected people by means of stupidity (of the host computers owner). He tricked them in to installign the bot that does the spamming. Now these end users will infect them selves with every thing under the sun in short order. With out this guy around to reinfect the reformated computers the net will collapse at a increaseing rate. Im sure each bot is set to send out new infected emails. But as each host falls to reformat or cleaning the number of new infections from each bot will slowly go down till none remain.
But any how yeh we will see his spam online for antoher year maybe only 6 to 9 months. Unless they can take out the top 5 or 10 spammer we will not see any real drop. People like linklogger will be able to show us the numbers and how the over all amount may or may not go down from one spammer take down. -- Evil does exist and it has a face to often that face is one that should look on their child with love in their eyes.

Hell, ya can buy whole botnets on IRC...it's the 'new' pharming..WoW/EverCrack accounts are old news.
GL with that.
Me, I block spam at the server..if that don't work, I'll send 'em a Gigabit Hello message from a country they can't pronounce.
Works pretty well so far.

| reply to antiphishing Don't forget that malware is a business and it has the same kind of business models as other software -- software as a service, etc. Just because an "advertiser" uses some software for their "campaign" doesn't mean that they necessarily own and/or operate the resources involved in distribution (for example). There's the same "buy it or build it" choice to make in these businesses, too. -- Feedback? e-mail: stuff@lupwa.org |

| reply to antiphishing Bottom line is spam level here remains fairly constant....about 50 spamgrams a day caught by spamassasin on my server.
Once in a while I scan down the list of subjects in the caught spam and shake my head that any of those can ever generate a single reply/sale for the advertiser. I know it only takes a small percentage out of the volume sent, but still....I just don't understand how spamming generates the amount of money it does. |
