This is my first built system. So far it is running great and the case looks great. Also first time I tried networking over the power lines in a house... I give that two thumbs up [just don't use a power strip to plug the adaptors in].
Ok here is my system [all from newegg][system is one day 2] My goal was to build the best machine I could, as cheaply as I could. My goal was a machine for 700 bucks, but I ended up at 970, mainly due to powerline network adaptor and buying Vista ultima:
XION II XON-103 Black SECC Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case 450W Power Supply 70 bucks. The only bad thing I have to say about this kool looking case is that the power supply that came with the case appears to be flimsy. Like the housing is falling apart. But it works, the case was in undamaged shape.. so I kept it.
MSI K9VGM-V Socket AM2 VIA K8M890 Micro ATX AMD Motherboard 54 Bucks. I wanted a simple easy to use mobo. So far this one fits the bill. Only draw back was my case has two led lights, the board only has one led plug. so I ahhh cut and paste to make it work lol...
EVGA 256-P2-N550 -T2 GeForce 7600GT 256MB 128-bit GDDR3 PCI Express x16 Video Card 115. Nice card, works good.
AMD Athlon 64 X2 3600+ Brisbane 1.9GHz 2 x 512KB L2 Cache Socket AM2 Processor 69 bucks. I wanted a dual core processor and one that was good but not to pricey.
CORSAIR XMS2 1GB (2 x 512MB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory 67 bucks. I have been messaged about my poor choice in getting just 1 gig of ram. So far though I haven't had any problems. I'll save up over the next few months and upgrade to two gigs, the max this mobo can support.
Western Digital Caviar SE16 WD2500KS 250GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive 70 bucks. I forgot it was OEM, so I ran out and brought cables, power connectors... then found out all that was in the case. Hey I said this was my first build
Logitech Cordless Desktop EX110 967561-0403 Black 102 Normal Keys 12 Function Keys USB + PS/2 RF Wireless Standard Keyboard Mouse Included 30 bucks. I brought a wireless mouse for another PC and was smitten by being wire free and mouse pad free.
HYUNDAI B70D Silver-Black 17" 8ms DVI LCD Monitor 300 cd/m2 700:1 Built in Speakers 170. Its a LCD monitor, flat screen, and 17 inches. I have heard the refresh rate is a tad slow, but thats ok.
LITE-ON 20X DVD±R DVD Burner with 12X DVD-RAM write and LightScribe Technology Black E-IDE/ATAPI Model LH-20A1H-185 34 bucks for a lightscribe dvd burner. I jumped on it. And yes I did the oops oem thing. But like I said before, the parts were in the case.
Microsoft Windows Vista 32-Bit Ultimate for System Builders Single Pack DVD 190. I didn't want to do it, but felt its a new system so why not go legit . So far after a few misunderstandings on my part [like how full security features are enabled] and one Blue screen of death, we are doing ok.
NETGEAR XE102G Powerline 80 bucks. One of the neatest things I tried in awhile. Just hooked it up, no software to install. And I get near 100mbs speeds, if not 100mbs.
Ok, thats it for my machine, as of now. Thank you for reading thru this. -- Say no to the IRS.. Yes to the Fair Tax! This beer is for: 464th bat. 98th div. Combat engineers. Hillside Ave schenectady NY. |

| reply to dragon Replaced my Cyber Acoustics AC-645 headset (ear wrapped), the left side crapped out, with the AC-401 model (same as the 645 model, but not ear-wrapped).
I find this model to output base a lot better and don't hurt your ears at first. The other ones needed a lot of "stretch" time. -- Transvestites...more than meets the eye! |

Replacing: Athlon 64 4000+ (San Diego) EVGA 6800GT Asus A8V Deluxe (Via K8T800Pro) Crucial PC3200/DDR400 1 Gb (2x512)
Retained: Audigy 2 Platinum WD 160Gb SATA3 7200 rpm WD 120Gb IDE/ATA100 7200 rpm Pioneer DVR-111D (16x max write) 1.44" OEM floppy (from a late 1997 vintage IBM S6 Aptiva )
Obsolete/non-transferable; now retired: Kenwood TruX 72X Maxtor 20Gb IDE/ATA66 7200 rpm
I'd like to thank Microsoft for making the transition as painful as possible. It was thrilling to see my existing 6 month installation of WinXP go down in flames and take a good deal of my data with it simply because it wouldn't boot following such a significant hardware change (very brief BSOD followed by involuntary reboot; tried a repair/reinstall w/o format and the damn thing was trying to force me into activation before I could even log on - how the hell do I activate without network drivers?! And forget dealing with customer support...fortunately, it would boot into non-network safe so I was able to go through the painstakingly slow process of backing up critical files with the 2001-era generic XP drivers). And to think - this is the first time in 10 years that one of my custom built systems POSTed on the very first press of the power switch (normally I overlook some jumper or connector in my haste to get the thing put together - but I took my time with this one).
The old setup was a good one; I think I got my money's worth with the A64 for its time (original proc was a 3000+ Clawhammer). Unfortunately, the lack of PCI-E support on the K8T800/A8V forced me to scrap the entire thing. There was no sense in going with an A64 X2 or something similar (even though the board - Socket 939 - would take it with a late version BIOS) because I was basically up against a wall with my video options. I replaced so much of the core system and retired so many legacy IDE devices AND my old 19" CRT (as of December) this time around that I basically have a second system waiting and ready to go once I bother to pick up a case and some cheap input devices for it. I even have a left over 400W Antec PSU. -- It's only hubris if I'm wrong. |
