Is there a router that is preferred with road runner or will a Linksys WRT54G work just fine? |

| I've got a few years old Linksys BEFSX41 and a WRT54GS V4 I've been using for a few years just south of you in San Diego. I don't notice much difference between the two and no performance issues with either on RR at 5/368.
I think the WRT is faster for bittorrent, but haven't ever really confirmed it.

| Well I am just asking cuz back when I was on Comcast I remember they had issues with some of the D-link routers and all. Now since I am buying a router for a friend of mine and I am not on RR and I live on the other coast I figured I would ask first. Thanks for your reply. |

For my WRT54GS V4: Firmware Version: v4.71.1, Hyperwrt 2.1b1 + Thibor15c
man we get screwed on speed in San Diego vs. LA. I wouldn't mind a little downtime during ownership transition for those speeds. |

1 edit | To me it's not really an issue of being savvy enough to take advantage of the additional features offered. It's that the routers based on Linux are, in my experience, the least prone to quirks. I have dealt with SO many routers with SO many glitches, bugs, and idiosyncracies. It's nice to know I can buy a specific router, put DD-WRT on it, and know I'm going to get a solid router that I can count on.
With Linksys firmware I'd have to reboot the router once every few weeks. It didn't handle eDonkey or Torrents well. With DD-WRT the very same piece of hardware "just works". -- Laser eye surgery rocks! I love frickin' laser beams. |

| Well I have had my WRT54G just on linksys firmware through comcast for years and never had a problem with it and I never had to reboot it other than when making changes and I run torrents almost nonstop.
The person I am getting this is not a power user in any sense of the word. So I think it would be overkill to add all that for them. I sent them a WRT54GL cuz like you I think Linux is the way to go. I don't want to be their tech support so I left it stock so if they have a problem they can call Linksys and not me. lol My parents and brother keep me busy enough with their problems. |

1 edit | Good choice! Yes, I presume Linksys has worked some of the bugs out of their official firmware by now. But if there's ever a problem you have options. I like options. You would be amazed how a router may work perfectly for one person in a certain configuration, and be completely unstable and unworkable for another.

| reply to champ2u My gosh. I can't believe your numbers and am so envious I feel sick. I'm in Ohio and am getting 5072 down and 450 up wireless. I've got to do some digging and find out what I can do - if anything to get my speeds improved. I may not be able to match yours, but why am I paying all this money when I can see there is much better service to be had.
Wish me luck as I think I'm going to need it.
