| reply to rseiler Re: SpeedTouch 516 Tweaking :)
Hi RSeiler,
I can understand that the GNet BB0060B wouldn't do the job at your level of attenuation but i own one myself and it's doing better than a SpeedTouch 546 at 31.5 dB, not to mention that 'DMT' can generate 24 h "noise" curves which are more useful than the ST's instantaneous spectrographic snapshot for the purpose of confirming an intermittent problem. It will let you do some "Bandwidth Shaping" if you're willing to copy the setup from this 'DMT' capture:
http://www.dslreports.com/forum/remark,17700525
Maybe it will still fail but you'll "see" what you couldn't put a finger on before... Now, about the v6.1.0.5 FirmWare, i've tried it all starting from v5.3.3.4 and i didn't keep it installed for a long time so don't loose your mind over it, life is too short... The phone extension is another thing you should get rid of pronto: use extensions for your LAN path instead since it can reach up to 300'!...
Of course, if you were clever enough to filter out the whole phone wiring right at the entry point it should help; lets hope the landlord is a relative of yours! Don't forget that even when unused, the phone wiring inside the walls would behave like an antenna and pick up A.M. radio interference, hence the need to go to the demarcation box if possible.

New FirmWares:
FirmWare version v6.2.17.5.0 variant "EI" (UK) FirmWare version v6.2.17.5.0 variant "AA" (Int'l) <-- Try this one 1st and save setup! |

| Just a quick follow-up here before I disconnect again: Eliminating the phone splitter bumped the Downstream SNR to 12.5/13, depending on when I look at it. How high does it have to be before it's no longer borderline?
What is the significance of the "Number of resets" in the yellow section on the right of DMT's page?
The setup here from the demarcation box is one line going to the apartment (where there's a phone behind a filter), and the other line going to an office in another part of the building. It's in the office where I have the PC and the splitter: one half going to the modem (over that soon-to-be gone 15ft cord) and the other half going to a multipurpose printer (with FAX), which is behind a filter. |

| An 8 dB DownStream SNR margin with around 60 dB attentuation is a cause of concern, 12+ db with only 40 dB shouldn't be.
This is what i consider the ideal wiring for people in homes:

If you can get close to that then there may be good hope... |

| Thanks for the link! I think the problem with using a DSL splitter at the point of demarcation is that it would block any possibility of having a phone in the office (the DSL side of the split).
Eliminating the 15ft-cable OR locating the modem in the apartment on the other line (I tried both) bought me another 3 or 4dB, so I'm up to 17 now. Since you say 12/40 should be enough, I'm fairly confident this will work. I'll report back. |

I'd consider a setup that looks more like this...

| Hi TilHasBB,
This graphic is made of superposed 'STMT' captures which i accumulated over a couple days while i was testing FirmWare v6.2.17.5-AA (Int'l). Raw speeds displayed by 'STMT' were unchanged (5056/800 Kbps) despite the split bands below 138 KHz but i didn't try to verify that those numbers really matched by evaluating my effective transfer speeds... At 1st glance, this MoDem Option seemed to work well: my DownStream RCO was quite steady at 60 % but then i started to experience multiple disruptions, my SNR margin went as low as 8.5 dB and i finally lost my connection with TekSavvy. As a consequence, i put back my GNet BB0060B MoDem on-line with a Twin PPP configuration to help with troubleshooting then it turned out that i could recover access thru VelCom only, which abruptly put an end to this testing...
As far as i can tell, ANSI T1.413 allows alternate bandwidth shapes but it may as well be a defect in Thomson's SpeedTouch FirmWare or (why not) 'STMT'.

Do you know ST users with ADSL2+ who can try this:
I'd bet MoDemOption Register 8 Bit 1 is for SRA... |

| Hi TilHasBB,
Oh i'm so glad, you ought to see this! It appears BoxFan just released 'STMTv0.7.2' and he added the feature which i've submitted to his attention: 24 hours noise records are now on their way to become a reality with the SpeedTouch series! I'm crying!

| I have a problem with a firmware upgrade I downloaded. It's the latest firmware, but it ever since I upgraded, I can't stay connected to my counter-strike games. Every time I go to speedtouch.lan it shows as another model, so I was just wondering how I can downgrade to the original firmware that I had when I got the modem? I opened the ports for counterstrike, and googled up my program and it seems people with speedtouch modems that upgraded their firmware also have the same problem, and I have been dying to find out how to downgrade back to my original firmware!
Thanks for the help! |

| Hi Sdgaman21,
You should find all the information required here:
»Re: My experience with Velcom so far... »The SpeedTouch "BootP Reset" recovery procedure
If i understood correctly, FirmWare v6.2.17.5 does not appear to bring stability to everyone. That's quite interesting to read, i wondered what it felt like for other SpeedTouch owners! Well, it leaves you v5.4.0.14 i suppose. Perhaps the ST is better for those who are lucky to get access to ADSL2+... Or maybe you got needs better served by in-between versions, it's possible since i have modest needs.

Hummm... But some troubleshooting would be needed here, we don't know the model/version and it's not clear what type of disruptions you have, actually.
Perhaps the ATM/DSL/PPP link isn't failing at all, did you disable the Web Browsing Interception (aka Differentiated Service Delivery in a CLI session)? |
