Is it common to lose sync during a lightning storm? Whenever a storm is within 20 I start losing sync. As the storm gets closer I lose sync completely. Sometimes it can be down for two hours or more....depending on the storm. Rain does not seem to be a problem. Can anything be done to fix this problem?
My modem stats are: 1493/253 SN down14.5, up 13 Attn down 57, up 38 |

3 edits | Sounds like a grounding issue to me, and yet...your stats are pretty marginal, judging by your line attenuation atleast.. Odd sync rates you're getting too. Mind posting us a connection log? I had this same problem before. Though, the only way I solved mine was through using a different modem (not a Westell)..? The tech said nothing could be done about my problem, simply because my line attenuation was too high (57.5, as read by Westell), but I proved him wrong. =]

Tim Either that, or get a good quality surge protector/UPS, but nothing beats unplugging your expensive equipment during a heavy thunderstorm. =] Free, efficient, but it can cost you some boredom. I usually leave my equipment on through storms, then again..we really haven't had anything strong at all in months, here. |

| I do have good-quality surge protectors (APC).
First, I do not run my phone line to the modem through them because that reduces the quality of my DSL connection.
Second, even though I know they are good protectors, I still do not trust them. I live on top of a large hill in central Alabama and we occasionally get some monstrous lightning strikes! I just feel safer with everything disconnected.

That is not at all right and while I am guessing about this IMO the problem is outside of your home that is not to say there may be problems in the home adding to this trouble.
Rain does not seem to be a problem. I thinking it is related to rain lightning would be either a short loss of sync or boom and its all over.
Can anything be done to fix this problem?
Yea you need to get a tech out there and let them take a look at your loop.

I have never lost more than one component in any single event. Also, neighbors have lost refrigerators and televisions in addition to computer components.
I want one of those whole-house surge protectors, but I am too lazy to buy one and have an electrician install it.

| I have checked the stats at the NID several times and they are almost identical.
I always unplug everything when a storm gets close, but the storms we had today were never that close to me...not close enough for any rain to fall in my area, but for over an hour I kept losing sync. I lose sync right before I hear thunder in the distance. The modem would resync for a few minutes then go through the cycle all over again.
I've also noticed in the last week or so I no longer on Max Sync....and my speed has dropped from 1.6mbps to 1.4 mbps.
Will a tech be able to locate the problem when there is no lightning in the area? The only time I have a problem is when there is lignting in the area. |

When a tech checked my stats at the nid, he spotted a few problems: Bad drop, bad grounding, and 1 bridged tap. If you're able to get a tech to inspect your area, tell him that you lose sync often on the line, no matter when thunder is in the vicinity or not. My stats improved slightly (a few db less attenuation), but my connection held up much better in storms, but still lost sync on occasion. I had to switch to an old 2 Wire modem to solve this problem, as awkward as that may sound. |

1 edit | reply to timcuth Bad storm heads my way, unplug all systems from power and isolate wireless router/dsl modem. Really like keeping an eye on the storm via radar on the internet so great time for wireless laptop on batteries. Worst case I'm out of dsl modem and wireless router. I'm betting and it's only a gut feel I could get the dsl modem replaced by AT+T for free; could be dead wrong about that. Any case a couple of hundred sure beat out several thousands. I've heard various stories how home owners insurances handles those cases. Have to admit using that setup my connection was solid as a rock -- never flinched. |

4 edits | reply to ncguy68 Me and a friend of mine who lives two houses down from me is having the exact same problems as you are. When lightening is in the area, we would lose our dsl connections. Later when the storms have past, everything is working fine again. When I called BellSouth techs out to my house, he could not find any problems, of course when he came out it was not lightening either. He said what was causing the problem is that we was at the very end as far as distance wise from the CO. He told me to drop my speed down to 1.5 from 3.0 (we can't get 6.0) and that should solve the problem, which it did not. I had the same problem with 1.5 as I did with 3.0. We have had this problem now going on three years now. Is there any BellSouth Techs reading this forum? If there is, please try to explain the problems that we are having. Thank you!
P. S. Oh, by the way, we are both using the Westell 6100 DSL modem.

| reply to ncguy68 I have the same problem, anytime there's even a light storm my westell 6100 loses sync. It's kind of good in a way because it does remind me to unplug everything so it doesn't fry. It could be due to being so far from the CO, but it shouldn't, I can only get the 1.5 not even the 3. |

Before buying a modem retail, consider buying a new or used modem on Ebay. Good modems can be bought cheap. |

It held sync completely throughout storms unlike the Westell 6100, but I was still taking in lag and CRC errors. Point is, I didn't lose sync anymore, and I could surf around all I wanted. |
