Lightning

Is it common to lose sync during a lightning storm? Whenever a storm is within 20 I start losing sync. As the storm gets closer I lose sync completely. Sometimes it can be down for two hours or more....depending on the storm. Rain does not seem to be a problem. Can anything be done to fix this problem?

My modem stats are:
1493/253
SN down14.5, up 13
Attn down 57, up 38

Re: Lightning

Sounds like a grounding issue to me, and yet...your stats are pretty marginal, judging by your line attenuation atleast.. Odd sync rates you're getting too. Mind posting us a connection log? I had this same problem before. Though, the only way I solved mine was through using a different modem (not a Westell)..? The tech said nothing could be done about my problem, simply because my line attenuation was too high (57.5, as read by Westell), but I proved him wrong. =]

Try testing at the NID? Depending on how much your stats improve, you might be able to eliminate the lightning-sync issue.

I recommend unplugging the computer system and unplugging the phone cord from the modem during lightning storms. Computer components generally do not like lightning. I have lost several cards and modems during lightning storms.

Either that, or get a good quality surge protector/UPS, but nothing beats unplugging your expensive equipment during a heavy thunderstorm. =] Free, efficient, but it can cost you some boredom. I usually leave my equipment on through storms, then again..we really haven't had anything strong at all in months, here.

Re: Lightning

I do have good-quality surge protectors (APC).

First, I do not run my phone line to the modem through them because that reduces the quality of my DSL connection.

Second, even though I know they are good protectors, I still do not trust them. I live on top of a large hill in central Alabama and we occasionally get some monstrous lightning strikes! I just feel safer with everything disconnected.

Losing components that are connected to more than one service could be a symptom of incorrect or missing bonds between those services.

I have never lost more than one component in any single event. Also, neighbors have lost refrigerators and televisions in addition to computer components.

I want one of those whole-house surge protectors, but I am too lazy to buy one and have an electrician install it.

Re: Lightning

I have checked the stats at the NID several times and they are almost identical.

I always unplug everything when a storm gets close, but the storms we had today were never that close to me...not close enough for any rain to fall in my area, but for over an hour I kept losing sync. I lose sync right before I hear thunder in the distance. The modem would resync for a few minutes then go through the cycle all over again.

I've also noticed in the last week or so I no longer on Max Sync....and my speed has dropped from 1.6mbps to 1.4 mbps.

Will a tech be able to locate the problem when there is no lightning in the area? The only time I have a problem is when there is lignting in the area.

When a tech checked my stats at the nid, he spotted a few problems: Bad drop, bad grounding, and 1 bridged tap. If you're able to get a tech to inspect your area, tell him that you lose sync often on the line, no matter when thunder is in the vicinity or not. My stats improved slightly (a few db less attenuation), but my connection held up much better in storms, but still lost sync on occasion. I had to switch to an old 2 Wire modem to solve this problem, as awkward as that may sound.

Bad storm heads my way, unplug all systems from power and isolate wireless router/dsl modem. Really like keeping an eye on the storm via radar on the internet so great time for wireless laptop on batteries. Worst case I'm out of dsl modem and wireless router. I'm betting and it's only a gut feel I could get the dsl modem replaced by AT+T for free; could be dead wrong about that. Any case a couple of hundred sure beat out several thousands. I've heard various stories how home owners insurances handles those cases. Have to admit using that setup my connection was solid as a rock -- never flinched.

Don't worry, a "whole house" protector will do very little to protect your phone circuits.

Actually it can do quite a bit to help by supressing a surge from power before it hits the modem and out the phone line.

That makes me feel better. I had FP&L put a "whole house" protector in a couple of years ago and wasn't quite sure how well it would actually work. I also use individual surge protectors for all my electronics.

I manufactured and sold surge protectors for many years and still remember the claims from customers that we had to pay for.

We had severe storms move through last night and the Netopia held sync till the storm was on top of us. These storms had an incredible about of lightning. We also had dime sized hail and over an inch of rain in 30 minutes! When the storm got bad I powered everything down and unplugged the AC and phone.

Aways a good idea, no matter what surge protection you have.

Update:

GREAT NEWS! I had thunderstorms all around me this afternoon, one lighten flash after another and I did not lose sync not one time. My friend who lives two house down from me, who still has a Westell 6100 modem, lost sync several times within a 30 minute period. I just don't understand it! I have had BellSouth/AT&T techs out here at my house several times, and they still could not find the problem. This had been going on for three years. I replaced my Westell 6100 for a Netopia 2241IN and it fixes my losing sync problem. Incredible!

Congratulations Gordon1fan! It worked for BOTH Of us. They really need to scrap the Westell 6100 and ship the Netopia 2241N to everybody. It even worked better when you have lower S/N ratios.

Seems like they reserve the Netopia for there 'more important' business customers. :-(

I could almost agree with that. I swear, any kind of distant or nearby thunder is torture for my Westell 6100. My old, clunky 2Wire, however, doesn't have a problem with it.

=/ What am I gonna do though when I get Extreme 6.0 (if it EVER becomes available in my area), seeing as it uses the ADSL2+ standard (and with my luck, I'll need it)?

Re: Lightning

This is all a bit surprising to me because I used to think the Westells were good DSL modems. I guess I'll have to look into getting a Netopia to fix my lightning problems.

Which would be a better choice, the Netopia 2241N or the 3346?

Unless it’s a close hit, no you shouldn’t be losing sync from lightning.

As the storm gets closer I lose sync completely. Sometimes it can be down for two hours or more....depending on the storm.

That is not at all right and while I am guessing about this IMO the problem is outside of your home that is not to say there may be problems in the home adding to this trouble.

Rain does not seem to be a problem.
I thinking it is related to rain lightning would be either a short loss of sync or boom and it’s all over.

Can anything be done to fix this problem?

Yea you need to get a tech out there and let them take a look at your loop.

Me and a friend of mine who lives two houses down from me is having the exact same problems as you are. When lightening is in the area, we would lose our dsl connections. Later when the storms have past, everything is working fine again. When I called BellSouth techs out to my house, he could not find any problems, of course when he came out it was not lightening either. He said what was causing the problem is that we was at the very end as far as distance wise from the CO. He told me to drop my speed down to 1.5 from 3.0 (we can't get 6.0) and that should solve the problem, which it did not. I had the same problem with 1.5 as I did with 3.0. We have had this problem now going on three years now. Is there any BellSouth Techs reading this forum? If there is, please try to explain the problems that we are having. Thank you!

P. S. Oh, by the way, we are both using the Westell 6100 DSL modem.

I have the same problem, anytime there's even a light storm my westell 6100 loses sync. It's kind of good in a way because it does remind me to unplug everything so it doesn't fry. It could be due to being so far from the CO, but it shouldn't, I can only get the 1.5 not even the 3.

If the Westell is the problem I wonder if you can request a different brand modem from AT&T or buy your own modem. Will the DSL modems you buy at retail work with AT&T?

Yes, they will work. You will need to set the VPI to 8 and the VCI to 35 and set your Encapsulation to PPPoE.

Before buying a modem retail, consider buying a new or used modem on Ebay. Good modems can be bought cheap.

AT&T also uses the Netopia 2241N. Does it have problems losing sync during thunderstorms? I will also do some checking on Ebay.

Thanks.

..and I'm one of those folks. Replaced my Westell 6100 with an old, 2 Wire Homeportal 1100. It held sync completely throughout storms unlike the Westell 6100, but I was still taking in lag and CRC errors. Point is, I didn't lose sync anymore, and I could surf around all I wanted.

I must be lucky because AT&T replaced my old modem with a Westell 6100 earlier this year and have been through several thunderstorms since (including two today) and it never lost sync during any of them.

Not on map

I have been using the Netopia 2241 for some time and do not have any problems during rain, thunder or lighting loosing sync. The only thing that I dislike about mine, MTU is set at 1448 and I have not found a way to change it. Also I get a false reading on my downstream SN reading, anywhere from 1.5 up to 20+ but at 1.5 I never loose sync

Would be interesting to find out if anyone else has these problems

I've had the exact same problem with my Westell 6100. Storm gets close and the connection is lost. The "light" shows it's connected but no connection thru the browser. I've put my "old" 2200 Westell back inline because I don't recall having a problem with it. When I upgraded to 6.0 Extreme, they sent me the Westell 6100. Have to wait to wait until the next rain storm to test. BTW, the ATT tech came out & checked the house and found no problems.

We have had the same issue with our Westell 6100 for months now, every time a thunderstorm would come near the house we would lose sync, that's even if it wasn't actually storming here at our home.

But last week it got worse. We had a storm come through that would cause our phones to ring with every lightening strike and after that storm if anyone called the house the modem would then lose sync.

After calling to report the issue ATT sent a tech out to test our inside wiring because they claimed that our problem had to be on our side of the NID. The tech showed up and did his thing and our inside wiring tested fine and naturally the Westell decided to be an angel and play nice when calling the house using our cellphones while he was here, staying in sync the entire time. He was nice enough to leave his card with a personal number on it in case we had an issue after he left and sure enough later that night someone calls and we lose sync.

He came back the next morning first thing and I was able to demonstrate and repeat the issue while he was here. After changing out filters to no avail he went out to his truck and swapped our Westell 6100 out for a new Netopia modem and to be honest, we haven't had any problems from inclement weather since.

Now THAT'S strange. Just curious. What are your DSL stats?

Is it a good idea to get the retail version of the Netopia 2241N-006? I know Bellsouth/ATT-SE won't support it if it doesn't have the Bellsouth firmware, but the Bellsouth version is hard to find unless you want a used one.

Set it up to use the VPI/VCI coordinates of 8/35, and it should work just fine.
