| Hi TilHasBB,
This graphic is made of superposed 'STMT' captures which i accumulated over a couple days while i was testing FirmWare v6.2.17.5-AA (Int'l). Raw speeds displayed by 'STMT' were unchanged (5056/800 Kbps) despite the split bands below 138 KHz but i didn't try to verify that those numbers really matched by evaluating my effective transfer speeds... At 1st glance, this MoDem Option seemed to work well: my DownStream RCO was quite steady at 60 % but then i started to experience multiple disruptions, my SNR margin went as low as 8.5 dB and i finally lost my connection with TekSavvy. As a consequence, i put back my GNet BB0060B MoDem on-line with a Twin PPP configuration to help with troubleshooting then it turned out that i could recover access thru VelCom only, which abruptly put an end to this testing...
As far as i can tell, ANSI T1.413 allows alternate bandwidth shapes but it may as well be a defect in Thomson's SpeedTouch FirmWare or (why not) 'STMT'.

| Hi TilHasBB,
Oh i'm so glad, you ought to see this! It appears BoxFan just released 'STMTv0.7.2' and he added the feature which i've submitted to his attention: 24 hours noise records are now on their way to become a reality with the SpeedTouch series! I'm crying!

| I have a problem with a firmware upgrade I downloaded. It's the latest firmware, but it ever since I upgraded, I can't stay connected to my counter-strike games. Every time I go to speedtouch.lan it shows as another model, so I was just wondering how I can downgrade to the original firmware that I had when I got the modem? I opened the ports for counterstrike, and googled up my program and it seems people with speedtouch modems that upgraded their firmware also have the same problem, and I have been dying to find out how to downgrade back to my original firmware!
Thanks for the help! |

| Hi Sdgaman21,
You should find all the information required here:
»Re: My experience with Velcom so far... »The SpeedTouch "BootP Reset" recovery procedure
If i understood correctly, FirmWare v6.2.17.5 does not appear to bring stability to everyone. That's quite interesting to read, i wondered what it felt like for other SpeedTouch owners! Well, it leaves you v5.4.0.14 i suppose. Perhaps the ST is better for those who are lucky to get access to ADSL2+... Or maybe you got needs better served by in-between versions, it's possible since i have modest needs.

Hummm... But some troubleshooting would be needed here, we don't know the model/version and it's not clear what type of disruptions you have, actually.
Perhaps the ATM/DSL/PPP link isn't failing at all, did you disable the Web Browsing Interception (aka Differentiated Service Delivery in a CLI session)? |

1 edit | Hi SammyJ,
You'll find a clear mention about Spectral Shaping in old SpeedTouch documents by Thomson, i believe:
E-DOC-CRN-20040405-0002_v2 SpeedTouch 510 Multi-User ADSL GateWays Customer Realease Note, Chap. 1, sect. 1.2.2, "New Features"
«reduce the upstream bandwidth in favour of downstream bandwidth on long loops. This is done by shaping the upstream power of ADSL»
Here's how i understand the concept in my own way:
Stats help from someone at Teksavvy, Bicephale, 2007-Jul-24
«less UpStream power means less noise injection and this is what i seem to be observing»
And this, dear SammyJ, is a radical demonstration:
Tweaks, Bicephale, 2007-Aug-27
«I'd like some Feed-Back on this, the UpStream part in particular...»
Thomson didn't earase all of the traces, actually:
SpeedTouch 516 Tweaking :), TilHasBB, 2007-Feb-16
There's a nice graphic at the end of this old post illustrating how i understood it eight months ago:
Need help with gnet bb0060a, Bicephale, 2007-Jan-25

Now, about TelNet... I seem to gather that you're already able to use 'DMT' judging from a snapshot:
Is a higher profile worth the low SN ratio?, SammyJ, 2007-Aug-30
It shouldn't be a problem for you to apply the CLI command i provided you before; i'm hoping to hear of you very soon, an other 'DMT' snapshoot will be most appreciated. Enjoy the day SammyJ, have fun!

Notice: to the attention of users who may need to put their ST5x6 unit back to its default settings, i'm quite pleased to suggest a document graciously published by Angelo168 as a simple reminder guide:

| Ok, pardon the newbie questions.
1- In USER.INI, is there a way to add comments to the file ?
2- When configuring modem from scratch, it is better to start with a blank USER.INI and only add your own commands to define only what you need ? (I need mine to be a DSL modem only, not a router).
3- When operating in "bridge mode" (aka: DSL modem only) is it possible to add a filter then ensures only PPPoE ethernet frames are passed on to the ATM interface ? The modem may see other non PPPoE ethernet frames from time to time and I do not want those to be passed on to the DSL side. |

| Hi JFMezei_,
I suggest you look at the '\Templates\*.tpl' files on your SpeedTouch Residential CD-ROM, you'll find that the syntax is similar. You can safely assume your remark lines should start with an apostrophe, which means ASCII character #39)d would be used...

I do not recommend manual editing of 'user.ini' if it can be avoided: you may end up reflashing your SpeedTouch to get rid of a defective configuration otherwise! I'm afraid you'll need to use a TelNet client to issue CLI commands, ultimately; you can try to start "from the ground up" while the syntax and structure are verified interactively. If your project requires some guru advice then be prepared to feel alone in the middle of nowhere but this is not the case here - i already mentioned the XS4All pages for the SpeedTouch but here it is once more:
Set up router in pure bridge mode
While we're at it try this other link too since it seems related to the second part of your question:
Create manually a Bridge connection
As for the 3rd part, welcome to the No Man's Land!

Or simply press the reset button in the back of the modem for about 7 seconds to initiate a "factory defaults" at which point, you get the default user.ini file.
>I'm afraid you'll need to use a TelNet >client to issue CLI commands
No need to be affraid to use Telnet... Also, I can setup user.ini locally and use ftp to send it to the modem, reboot and voila, new config in place. It is a shame though that the user, ini isn't made of pure cli commands.
>Set up router in pure bridge mode
Yep, I had gone to that site. The problem I have with those commands is that I have no way to know/understand what else is leftover from the rest of the config and whether the modem will have other "capabilities" still active. That is why I would like to start off with a clean slate and activate only what I need.
>As for the 3rd part, welcome to the No Man's Land!
Yeah. I had toyed a bit with the modem when I got it last year (of whenever thsoe group purchases were done), but gave up when I had other priorities. Now that Bell is considering raising speeds, I figured I would need to get this puppy going since my old 3com doesn't do ADSL2.
But am now wondering if it might not be simpler to get a new modem that has less complex setup and better documentation. The CLI document may provide all the options to commands, but it doesn't explain them. |

| Hi JFMezei_,
If you feel there should be more flushing then you can try to remove the rest of the extra stuff thru ftp hoping 'user.ini' won't end up being rejected.
It was suggested to me to read documention for the 608/620 series even if this is the Business-class:

Thanks Bicephale. That helped a little bit. I haven't yet found it, but there may be a way to implement the filtering I need, not by filtering packets, but by only accepting packets coming from the WAN ethernet port of my router. (since such a port would only send out PPPoE ethernet frames) and the modem would therefore not process clustering broadcasts (or appletak broadcasts etc).
I was able to trim out a lot of the crap from the user.ini and the modem does seem to boot. There is more crap I can remove and turn off as well. A lot of the stuff is probably there to feel pull down lists onthe web interface (like the gazillion games that are pre-defined).
But this has made me realise just how much better my old netgear router is when it comes to NAT and filtering. I say "better" because it is far more obvious what its config does. (call coming in to that port range gets directed to that LAN IP address for instance). |

| Hi JFMezei_,
It's obvious there must be a definite advantage in using a separate router, provided its manufacturer does everything in his power to protect the user's knowledge by sticking to one familiar environment, of course. I wish i could do more but that's only my first SpeedTouch and i have rather modest needs anyway, though i can testify that TelNet will save you some frustration at times. I noticed that the 'user.ini' syntax is very similar to CLI language; titles between square brackets are usually forming the start of a command, or at least it's a clue as to what the key word may look like. But honestly, the gurus are elsewhere in my opinion so i suggest to visit these sites in hope for further progress:
