I want a few channels(about 5) that are not in my package. Is there any way they would let you add them for a monthly fee? Or this not going to be allowed? -- The best signature out there. |

I'm probably going to cancel their TV service then. Dish Network offers way cheaper rates for a much better channel selection.
The $52 for standard cable is really chewing at me when I can get the same channels and everything with Dish Network for $29.99 a month. $22 cheaper for me. -- The best signature out there. |

| If satellite works in your situation, go for it. Big trees and a lengthy contract prevent me from switching over.
I always see heavy advertising for Dish and DirecTV, but their latest commercials are not too flattering. One of them talks about the "lies" about rain fade and quotes an up time average of just under 97%. It was over 12 days of interrupted service, one day of total outage per month! That seems really high to me, and I've had both Dish and DirecTV, albeit in a southern state (Austin, TX) with below average rainfall. Regardless, those are statistics that I would certainly never use as a boastful marketing ploy.
Also, the latest $29.99 deal claims you get an HD receiver for free OR a PVR. So make sure they give you the right price for setting up all of your televisions with HD and digital recorders before you commit to anything.
There are lots of things to consider. But if you are talking a couple of standard TV's with no HD or digital recorders, cable may not be your best option. Another thing to keep in mind is the discount you get for you online services. Internet by itself is $15 more with either available speed tier. At least in my area; $42.95/$52.95 with TV or Phone service and $57.95/$67.95 for HSI only. So in my case, that $30 satellite package effectively increases to $45. |

Illinois isn't too big on rainfall and no trees blocking anything in my area so I will likely switch to Dish for the TV service. Going to call Comcast up and see if they offer me anything nice to keep them. -- The best signature out there. |

| reply to Obliteration Estimates vary, but generally speaking, the typical cable network would cost about $4-$6 per month, if priced individually. For even as few as two or three channels on the same tier, most folks would be better off just purchasing the tier. (We have two tiers of non-premium digital channels here. The first tier costs an additional $7.95, and the second tier costs an additional $4 on top of that.) Due to this, there is very little interest in offering individual channels. |

| reply to Obliteration I switched to Dish Network as well. I get great service... no outages (and we have had a few bad storms here), more HD (and don't talk about HD-lite crap because I can't notice any difference), and lower prices. Much lower, in fact. For the top package, two DVRs (one HD and one SD), HD package, and locals my monthly bill is $80, which covers all four TVs in the house. And all the TVs have DVR!
I was paying over $120 for comparable service with Comcast. Add on HSI and that's well over $150. |

4 edits | reply to Obliteration 52 dollars for basic standard struck me too. thats why i upgraded to the triple play with all premiums included for 129 a month. thats phone, internet 6/750 and basic, standard, digital plus, hbo, starz, showtime, cinemax, encore, tmc. much better then any dish deals i could have got. did i mention its from the same company that wanted to charge me 52 for basic standard. the difference is a contract. but dish would have had that also. also thats for three tvs as i also get 2 free digital boxes for a year. add in the vod content and its a no brainer. the days of me paying 80 dollars a month for tv is over. and im glad for that. current break down is phone=33 internet=33 basic standard=33 digital plus with all premiums=30. basically instead of 52 dollars for basic standard i get all the channels for 63. where i pay 11 over the cost of basic standard i can deduct 9 of that off on what i save on the internet. so it really comes out to for 2 dollars more i get them all. |

| So it is basically a $50 sign-up fee that the offer instead of requiring a commitment. Same difference, really, in the long-run. Think of it as a commitment with a $50 early termination fee, that everyone pays even if you fulfill the commitment! |

2 edits | reply to Obliteration nope, triple play isnt always for new customers. ive been a customer for over 10 years and received it. it just required me to sign a two year contract instead of a one year contract. i would have happily signed a 5 year contract at that rate. there was lengthy posts here about a month ago and lots of people called and jumped on the triple play that was already subscribing subs. most had trouble actually getting cinemax thrown in on the 129 deal tho. |

| reply to 58483323 Wow! It went from Can I buy a few extra channels to Dish is better than comcast, rain / snow fade, HD Lite, to Dish and contracts to here's a referral code so you get some sort of credit and he gets the avoid the $50.
And to the OP... What ever service is going give you the channels you want, at a price that gives you value in the area you feel fits your needs is going to do the best for you in the long run including contracts and terms.
Personally, this is a question and decision usually best left to the one you're married/sleeping with and sharing financials.. because no one here, and their set up, is going to be there for you when/if the hammer falls later.

| I was just answering questions and no, I wasn't trying to get a $5 credit on my bill. I was just explaining that the ClubDish program allows someone to avoid that pesky $50 activation fee. Dish Network rarely gives out the $5 credit anyways. I wasn't the one that first brought up Dish Network, I was just sharing my story. I don't think Dish Network is any better than Comcast. I say that they're pretty much about the same here. The only difference is price and Dish Network's DVR is better. That's about it.
I agree with you... the OP needs to decide what's best for them. I wasn't trying to force Dish Network on anyone. I was just sharing my success story because they inquired on Dish Network. And the whole ClubDish thing more so benefits the new customer. I used it as well and was glad to save $50. |

| reply to Obliteration I have had Dish Network HD since August 2004 and am leaving Dish next month when my 18 month HD commitment is over. I was paying Dish $137 a month and switched to Fios for $101 per month for better programming. The Dish basic package for $29.99 does not include locals or regional sports networks. The comparable Dish package to basic cable is $39.99 a month plus you have to pay a satellite receiver fee for every TV. With cable you only pay a fee for TVs with set top boxes. The Dish HD fee is $20 a month which is the highest in the industry and it is not worth it. So if you take the basic Dish package of $39.99 and add $20 for HD, you are already at $60 per month plus satellite receiver and DVR fees.
When switching make sure you are getting all the channels that you actually want. Where I live, Dish did not give me CSN, YES or SNY in SD or HD. Fios gave me all three in HD and Comcast does the same in my area. Dish does not have CSN Chicago in HD. |
