DBZ: How old is Yamcha anyway?

I just picked up the box set of DragonBall (episodes 1-13 with the movie "Curse of the Blood Rubies".)

Turns out the movie is basically a compilation of episodes 1-13, apparently it is/was the pilot for the entire Dragonball series.

In the movie/episodes, Yamcha is portrayed as a very strong fighter (no scar on his cheek yet); and very very shy around girls. He meets Bulma in this time period.

However, throughout DBZ he seems to not really have aged that much (if at all.) The only difference I could make was the scar and his shyness.

So, how old is he really? By the time the end of DBZ is near he still looks like he's the same age (or at least the same age as Goku).

Bulma hasn't grown that much either (other than her hair style); and considering she was a teen-ager when Goku was still just a little kid it kinda makes me wonder...

I am not real sure how old Yamcha is, but in DBZ, Goku is 44 years old in the first episode of the Saiyan Saga. (so old it doesn't add up)

I'm pretty sure that Goku isn't 44 years old at any point of DBZ. Maybe in GT, but definitely not DBZ.

Goku was 12 in Dragonball, lets say 20 years passed to DBZ. He's now 32, 33 by the time the Androids come, 34 after the time chamber, 41 by the Buu Saga, 54 by the End of DBZ so he's 64 on DBGT.

If he's 44 on DBZ by the sayajin saga that puts him at. 76???? on DBGT? comon!

Well I guess they *can* get their concept of time screwed up, knowing that his "one day" back on earth has already spanned at least 12 episodes...And he got a year older in one day when he trained with Gohan in the time chamber.

XRiptorX's timeline makes more sense... guessing loosely around mid-20's at the start of DBZ (that's a good time for the first child). That makes him mid-30's in the Cell games (Gohan was 11 then, I think), and early-40's in the Buu saga (7-8 years after the Cell games). Good call.

But something is wrong: If Gohan was 11 at the Cell games, and the next saga picks up 7 years later, that makes Gohan 18... and just starting high school???

Needless to say, Goku ages appearance-wise as well as Tina Turner's legs.

In Japan, some schools are not based on our age schedule...enrollment is a privilege and even require tuition for certain fields of education. Not entirely a pure public or private school. So Gohan could enroll enroll at 18 and then pursue his education; therefore riptor's timeline could still be correct.

Good Times

But maybe he doesnt look like he aged between the Cell games and Buu saga because he was dead. Do people age in the other world?

Good point Carnage, I forgot about that. I think that just about covers it... damn, that makes Bulma nearly 50 in the Buu saga?! I think she was about 16 at the start of Dragonball, maybe 8 years or so older than Goku.

Bah, who cares about details!

Yea, the ages are all screwed up. Chi Chi is the only one you can really tell has aged.

I never really cared about age anyways. I think even the producers of the show dont know what age everyone is.. heh..

Yamcha is the same age as Bulma.

In the end of DBZ, Bulma looks at Goku and Vegeta then looks at herself and says that she looks old and asked why don't they look old. Vegeta replied by saying that a Saiyajin ages slowly so that he can fight more or something to that effect. I don't remember it exactly.

Heck, I beleive that since they're so powerful, their cells dont have to weakenen out, their cells just get stronger So they cant die from old age.

Vegeta said the prime of a sayajin's life is extended due to fighting and training.

For that matter, In this first movie, in which Master Roshi hasn't actually begun to train Goku yet (Goku decides to train with him at the end), but Master Roshi looks just as old in that movie as he is now. (Bald, with large gray moustache and beard.)

I guess I'll have to get the rest of the episodes before I can figure out this whole thing...

Master Roshi keeps his look because he drank a potion that gave him eternal life. He's actually 100+ years old.

yes i remember; Saiya-jins are blessed with a long youth and Goku was made a child in GT so I think that screwed up his aging process too
