Win XP & Remote Desktop & Linksys Router

I figured out how to get Win XP’s Remote Desktop/Assistant working when you are using a Linksys router and thought I would post it here for those who are interested.

Everything I could find from Microsoft and others said that Remote Desktop uses port 3389/TCP. So I tried forwarding this port to my PC on the LAN and it never worked. I could use remote desktop on two PC’s on my LAN just fine but this made sense because I wasn’t dealing with NAT across the WAN/internet. I observed the ports that were being used and come to find out, remote desktop also uses port 4908/UDP. So I configured my port forwarding on the Linksys as follows:

3389~3389 TCP 192.168.1.XXX
4908~4908 UDP 192.168.1.XXX

XXX = the IP of the PC on your LAN you are setting up for Remote Desktop.

Also, disable SPI if enabled. It works fine with this setup.

If using Remote Assistant, create and save the invitation. Open the invitation with Notepad and look for the IP address which is listed just before port 3389. You will notice that this is the LAN IP of the PC that created the invitation. Change this to your WAN IP and save. Make sure that within your Linksys you have port 3389 forwarded to the correct PC on the LAN and send the e-mail to whoever you are inviting for the remote session.

If you are using Zone Alarm make sure to open up these same ports under the “security” section/advanced/internet zone custom settings tab.

One last thing. I would highly recommend NOT leaving your machine configured this way. Seems like a crack waiting to happen.

I have a laptop and desktop both running XP-Pro. They are both connected via a Linksys Wireless Router w/4 Port Switch. I have the Linksys WPC card in my laptop.

All I did was set up the router (using the web based utility), installed the drivers that came with the laptop card....ignoring "not valid XP drivers" message.

I have my router plugged into my ethernetcard of my PC and the DSL modem plugged into the WAN port of the router.

I set up a user on each machine. Gave each one full access rights to eachother's machines and that was it.

I didn't do any kind of port settings. From my laptop, I just launch Remote Desktop, put in my Desktop's computer name and that's it. I see the destkop on my laptop and vice cersa

Is there something that I am missing? Or something else that I need to do?

Everything seems to work AOK.

Thanks!

BD,
The previous post describes a connection with a system outside of the firewall. Inside, on the LAN is pretty straightforward.

Actually, you only need to forward port 3389 in order to use Remote Desktop (or Terminal Service in Win2000). And you can also change the port number in XP. Microsoft has a knowledge base article about how to change port number.

Have you successfully got it working while only forwarding port 3389? I know when I tried it I couldn't get it to work. When I forwarded port 4908 is when it started working.

Yes, I have it working here with just 3389 to my desktop as well. I did have to apply the update to fix remote desktop failing to connect. It was very intermittent until I applied the update from the windowsupdate site.

What is SPI and where is in the Linksys router?

SPI is "Stateful Packet Inspection", it can be found under the "Advanced" tab in the same area where you set "Block WAN Request". I don't use my Linksys anymore so I can't go to the section to tell you exactly.

If you are not running a current firmware version you won't have this option.
