| reply to Pesimist Re: Hughes email down?
Maybe a coincidence?: I have several email accounts with hughes and only one was not working. I logged in to the account manager, logged out again and all email accounts are working now. -- dw7000/.98m/2watt/Horizon1/1390/256k4/5 /xp sp2/desktop compaq 6330CA/linksys wireless/thinkpad xp pro |

| reply to grohgreg Whatever their issue was, it's apparently solved. Mail (spam) showed up with Webmail, and OE read it normally after using the config tool and entering the password. For now at least, everything's back to as normal as HughesNet can be.
Danke again for all the feedback, folks. |

| reply to DoctorDoom There was a method to the madness of asking for your settings, cuz I've seen this once before with Hughes. They came back from a maintenance period which apparently included some protocol changes. Folks that were affected had to adjust their email client properties to recover. No excuse for not notifying customers in advance, but still not unprecendented in my 7+ years with Hughes.
They had (or still have) a bug in the mail server software that causes the "cannot find server" error message to be generated by MS Outlook and MSOE. Quick fix is simply to close/open the email client, since it's not likely Hughes is going to talk Microsoft into fixing a server operating system bug.
Since the web-based auto config utility will almost certainly lag behind any server maintenance, I was thinking you might follow that link I posted above to see if there's anything in the manual config instructions that might look wrong in your current MSOE settings.

| reply to grohgreg Thanks for the responses. "mail.hughes.net" pings properly.
I set up OE using the config tool and manually. I also used the IP address instead of mail.hughes.net. In all cases, the result is the username/PW screen.
The userid & password are valid, since I can log into the Webmail service with them. It goes through the motions and then throws the message, "Could not connect to the specified mail server. Please check your account settings."
My settings haven't changed since it did work, ergo my guess is that HN is still having world-class system hiccups. For now I'll leave it out of OE and occasionally try Webmail until I see real mail.
I already told those who had the address to revert to my main one, so it's mostly a spam magnet anyway. |

| reply to Vermonter Hey folks, unless this is an unusual coincidence on top of the mess, it IS caused by Hughes! I was down from Saturday to Tuesday with various operating system and mail programs issuing confused messages about account settings (the best guess of some programmer to translate "it isn't responding" into customer lingo?)
With no backup, no live alternate data base, no alternate routes, just one delivery van running along one street in a critical, continuous delivery contract, Hughes or its sub-contractor fell flat on its face and still, 5 days later, has obviously not even managed to recover operation for real time traffic, let alone the vast amount of messages ranging from spam to important / critical that they lost.
Perhaps they so resoundingly lost everything (account name, passwords etc.) on one server that they are invisibly, desperately trying to figure out which accounts actually used their own mail service(!), which could account for the strangely staggered recovery.
And, to extend the shaky crystal ball gazing, perhaps that oh so precious and guarded quality, secrecy, is preventing them admitting the goof and asking us to reply if we are still down. But then again without mail and tech support that can hardly speak English, I guess they would have a few problems...
Ah, the joys of competence... |

| reply to DoctorDoom To determine whether it's your settings or HN, why don't you access the web-based mail portal at mail.hughes.net. If you can access your mail that way, there is something wrong with your Outlook Express (or other mail program) settings. If you can't get at your mail via the web mail portal, then your mail server is still down or there are specific problems related to your account and you'll have to deal with technical support. -- Hughesnet, DW4000, Satmex5, 1130, XP Pro SP2, 4.2.1.10 |

1 edit | reply to DoctorDoom What ARE your account settings?
Try pinging mail.hughes.net, see if the server is responding. If you get a response, then close/restart your Outlook Express and try another mail check. If you don't get a response, phone tech support.
When I ping mail.hughes.net, the response comes from 64.97.131.50. So to save the time it takes for the DNS server to convert the plain language address, I tell my MS Outlook that the SMTP and POP server addresses are 64.97.131.50 instead of mail.hughes.net. Doing so also saves the address conversion time at the DNS server.

| reply to Vtblues As of this moment, HN email is still innaccessible. Webmail message:

Via OE, PW is rejected.

| reply to email_asap It's interesting to see the difference on the Wild Blue forum.
Someone posted that he's recently experiencing problems receiving email. He suspects it is due to the recent thunderstorms at his end.
There's also a post about changes to the Wild Blue FAP policy. They are relaxing penalties for everyone except outright abusers.
Otherwise its quiet. |

| reply to Vtblues I'm no computer geeK, just a grandma who wants to keep in touch with the kids and surf the web. After assuming something was wrong with ME and with MY computer and fiddling with everything I could think of, I fianlly called Hughes customer service. Duh. A recording told me that THEY were having a problem with THEIR email program. And by my records their 'problem' took over 2 full days to rectify. I fully expected hundreds of back logged emails once the system was up and running again, but NO-OO-OO........Two days of emails are now lost in cyberspace somewhere.
We're in the boondocks of the Ozarks and I gave up slow dial up for Hughes 'high speed internet' service. (Anybody have a bridge they want to sell me?)
Our phone company now has Internet. It's not dsl, but it can't be any worse than Hughes, plus it's less than half the price. My contract is now up, so can you say "B'BYE HUGHES"??? |

| reply to Vtblues Got email last night at about 10P EDT. And true to form from Hughes, we'll NEVER get and apology "We're sorry", an explanation "The server failed during our 'maintenance' on Sunday, and we had no backup" or even get baffled by BS "Ther reverse diphasic inverse frappulator failed to synch with the translateral inducers causing a non harmonious situational event". (One of my favorite rules of life: If you can't dazzle them with brilliance, baffle them with BS.)
Oh, and I forgot to mention: I suppose "support by email" is in India, too. After filling out my name on their email support form, they couldn't even spell my name right when they answered me not once or twice, but THREE times in their reply. I know that this is petty nit-picking on top of the already atrocious service that we get, you would think that they could read my name from their form and at least type my name right. It is not like Scot(t) is THAT difficult a name to spell....
To those of you who appear to STILL not have mail, I wish you luck. I'll be calling the executive care number myself today. |

| reply to Vtblues Here it is Tuesday night, almost Wednesday and still no e-mail service. Been down here since around 10:00 p.m. (CT) Sunday night.
Pretty poor customer service in my humble opinion. At the very least they could post something explaining what the issue is and an estimated time till repair. Leaving all their customers in the dark is very bad management, but then everyone already knows that..

| reply to Vtblues OK, I got into the website email just now, 12:28am, but couldn't get in through my thunderbird. Of course, there is no mail for July 8, 9 or 1/2 of the 10th . Still nothing on their home page or customer care page, not a hint of a problem. This seems very weird, not incompetent. Is Dick Cheney running Hughesnet now? (Sorry Bushies |

| reply to Vtblues I just received a survey from Hughes regarding their customer service. they asked for my comments and this is what they got "it wasn't the customer service person so much as the hughes system of support as a whole that I was dissatisfied with. While I know no promises are made regarding the email service provided, that for it to go unrepaired for 48+ hours is inexcusable. With that type of service provided I solved the problem myself, I now have a new email provider that I will use for important contacts as it has been demonstrated that hughes provides no reliability whatsoever" -- HughesNet/HN700S/Pro Plus Plan/.74 dish/Galaxy 16 (099 °W)1110.0 MHz/Win XP Home SP2/ P4 2.26 Gig 1 Gig of Ram
